My husband found out today that he has the flu. I have an appointment to get my flu shot tomorrow, by coincidence. Should I still get it or wait until he is clear of the flu? I don't know what to do.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Well I took your advice moms and called my doc and my childrens, who by the way have gotten the flu shot. And they gave us all tamiflu. Just recommend to take once a day for 10. Thanks moms for the great advice!!!

You've already been exposed to his flu, so getting the shot won't prevent you from catching it from him (if you're going to get it from him). He may be infected with a different strain than the shot prevents against, so it getting the shot will protect you further. But don't assume that because you're getting the shot that you won't still get the flu.

My guess is that you've already been exposed, so the shot may be pointless since you're probably already infected. Call the dr. and ask them before you waste your time going in.

I would call your doctor because you need to be on anti virals as soon as a family member is diagnosed with the flu. We had one of our kids bring it home before our shots one year, and as soon as that swab came back positive, the doctor wrote scripts for tamaflu for the entire family. You may still need the shot if there is more than one strain going around this year. Your doctor is the person to speak to about what to do now. Call your pediatrician about your children too. The sooner you start on anti virals, the better.

I would not get the shot tomorrow, but I would still call my DR and ask about getting the shot in the future. Getting it tomorrow will not protect you from your husbands flu and you are not allowed to get the shot when you have a fever (which is a high likelyhood for you within the next couple of days). I seriously doubt they will put you on antivirals unless you have an immune condition which makes the flu very dangerous for you, but you can ask.

I don't think there is any reason to not get it. Go ahead with your appointment. It takes 4 to 6 weeks to be effective so you still may catch the flu from your husband, but you might not.

The flu shot contains the most likely strain of flu viruses that will go around during the season but it doesn't cover all of them. Get the flu shot and like Martha said jump on some anti-virals to help.
