Humidifier - Grand Rapids,MI

I got a new humidifier and I just checked the filter and it was all moldy. I didn't realize that the water level had dropped so it didn't have enough water in it to activate. Does anybody have a good one? It needs to be big enough for the whole house, small enough that I can clean it without breaking something and have a clear indicator that the water is low. And a key pad that locks to keep out the 2 year old would be nice. Oh, and not to completely break the bank. We just had to replace a car. Luckily no one was hurt.

What can I do next?

That store at most malls...all sorts of really neat and hi tech stuff, but most often more expensive than most retail places, RIGHT! Sharper Image. Check there. They have very state of the art items and something like you're looking for is one of them.

K.,

We have a small room humidifier, and our filter gets caked with lime. Our water is very limey. What I do is periodically take the filter out and soak it in a bowl with some vinegar diluted with a little water. It seems to keep the filter clean. You could also do this to get rid of the mold on your filter, as vinegar kills mold (it is an anti-fungal). At least you could keep using it until you find something different.

Well - I had a humidifier - and after I told my pediatrican that fact - he told me to go home and get rid of it right away - that it did more harm than good. So - after listening to him - I would suggest not having one at all. However - if you still decide to - the humidifier I had was filterless so there was no mold issue, etc. So that might be an option.

We just had to get a new furnace installed and there was an option to add a humidifier to the furnace for an extra 300.00 if this sounds like an option contact a heating and cooling place.
