How Would You Tell If Your Child Is Allergic?

My daughter is almost 1yr old (13th). I have been transitioning her to milk for the last week and have noticed that she has had really runny poop. I can't remember how long the poop has been going on. I can say, I've noticed she has a new tooth starting to come in and we (me, my husband and oldest dd) have all had a virus within the last 2 weeks. Coming out both ends, but only lasting a day. She also has gotten sick during the night while we all were sick. But anyway, her runny poop (more like water) has lasted over a week and I'm not sure if it is due to transitioning her to milk or if it could be the other issues.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for all the responses. She finally has had normal stools. I just couldn't remember from my first dd whether the loose/watery stools were part of the transition to milk.

when I went to milk with my kids.. i started formula and 1/4 bottle filled with milk 3/4 formula.. for 1 week.. then 1/2 milk, 1/2 formula.. then I would see how they did. Try this out.. and see how things go. It worked like a charm.. because their body adjusted easier. Good luck.

Dear A.,

My son has a milk-protein intolerance and gets super runny/watery poops if he ingests milk or milk products. If the problem persists, you might want to get a referral to a pediatric gastroenterologist.

If you think that might be the case, please know that a milk protein intolerance is NOT the same thing as lactose intolerance. Lactose is a sugar; milk protein is a ... protein. Different chemicals; different reasons for not being able to digest them. Milk protein sensitivities are usually do NOT show up in an allergist's "scratch test," but they can be diagnosed by a gastroenterologist. If your daughter has one, you will have to avoid all dairy products, at least for a while, though most kids outgrow this by age 3. Some children can handle goat or sheep milk/yogurt, some can't.

Best of luck,

Mira

P.S. Your daughters have beautiful names!

Hey A., my daughter had the same virus. All adults who she came in contact with ended up puking and diahrrea, she only had watery poop though. It last a week and 2 days. She is finally getting over it. If she was allergic to milk usually it will constapate her. My daughter has had mushy poop and we have been to a GI to find any issues that she may be having. She has been on milk since she was 9 months old and even though she had diahrrea like BM's it was never a concern that there was an allergy. The GI and Dr both said baby's digestive systems change so much so there was really no concern. If her BM's do not get better or you still have a concern I would always call the ped just for a piece of mind.. hope this helps out a little!

Hi A.,
The tooth could be the culprit, that was the case for us for quite a while.
But, since there are so many other things going on, i'd take it one step at a time. milk allergies usually come in rashes and hives, blood in the stool. Until she is regular again, take away the milk, give her plenty of poop stoppers (rice, applesauce, banana) don't worry about nutrition, just hydration! And then, when she is healthy again, try the milk unless you saw any of the reactions described above. If you saw those, take her to the doc. They can do a whole series of allergy tests on her skin which won;t affect her digestive system.

Good luck,
M. (mother of 2 boys, 4 and 2 years old)

A lot of kids get diarrhea while making the switch to milk. That with the teething and the possible virus, I wouldn't jump to any conclusions. But it doesn't hurt to call the pediatrician.

I would do 2 things if I were you
1. Have the Doctor run and allergy pannel on her blood. 2. Change her Milk to Lactaid or Lactose free milk.

My son was lactose intolerant; however, his blood draw showed an allergy, but he was not and he has out grown it. The blood draw just shows a reaction to something a skin test would rule out an allergy vs intollerance that is why I am recomending lactaid.

Good Luck

I'm not sure where you live but there is a stomach virus going around where I live - Ocean County. My son just got over it - started with really runny poops - water - he didn't seem sick at all though - he was congested for a while with the typical "cold" but he was still acting himself, so I thought maybe he was coughing up the mucus and swallowing it - once the first wet poop came the virus progressed pretty fast though - turns out he had a stomach virus and upper resp infection/ear infection - I knew he was sick (upper resp) - but honestly he wasn't showing signs of it until he really started throwing up and started to run a fever, the runny poop dominated everything else though...so just keep an eye on her for signs of sickness.

A.,

It probably is the adjustment to the milk. Did you do it gradually, by increasing one ounce milk while you decreased one ounce formula. If she is doing all milk maybe try to transition her a little slower going back to half formula and half milk. It may take her body a little longer to adjust. Have you been giving her yogurt and cheeses all along because if it is dairy it probably would have been happening all along. If you all had the stomach bug it could be the combination but it shouldn't have lasted this long. Does she have any cramping, when you have lactose intolerance it is usually painful. If she were allergic I think the reaction would be much more then just runny stools. That is why I think it could just be her body adjusting. If it continues I would check with the doctor to be on the safe side. Good luck!!

My child is allergic to milk and eggs. This was long before 1 year old. First, she/ he would be up at night and not be able to sleep. Second, there would be some kind of rash on her body, eczema. Third, she maybe throwing up, but not always. So I think its more a transition, then an allergie. Keep an eye out, and if the loose stolls last longer, call the doctor. She maybe sensitive to it. I mixed her formula with rice milk at first, then did all rice milk. Might be a thought, if you can.
