How to Treat Lice Naturally and Effectively?

My daughter came back from school with lice, yikes!
This is the first time that it's happening to her and I don't remember much from when it happened to me as a child.
I don't want to use chemicals if I can avoid them. Do you know of any home remdies that really works?
What is the procedure to follow, what should we do? For how long?
I also have an 18 months old baby. Should we treat her as well?
Thank you for your help.

So What Happened?

Thank you so much everyone for your input. I took in account what you all told me and here's what we did: First I cut her beautiful long long hair. (She didn't mind, she wanted to have shorter hair and she is still really beautiful anyway). I applied oil on her hair but it was too messy. So we washed it off and I applied a heavy coating of vaseline that she kept on for several days to kill the bugs. It was impossible to wash off. It took two shampoos per day for an entire week! But it worked fine. Then we finished them off with soaking her hair in pure alcohol to kill the eggs. It wasn't pleasant but it worked fine as well. With such an agressive and long treatment, we never had to brush her hair one by one to get rid of the eggs. We also washed her bed sheets, clothes and pillows in hot water and dried them in a drier. She is now bug free! But we will use a few drops of tea tree oil in her shampoo as preventive care from now on.

Did you find out anything? I just recently discovered that my 6 year old daughter has them too. We have a 3 year old son and a 10 month old son who are always in contact with her. Please let me know if anything worked for you.

I work full time and have 3 wonderful children and am married to a sweet man.

Tea Tree Oil, Gets rid of it and keeps it gone. I work for a company that has it mixed into the shampoo, so no need to buy 2 different tyeps of treatment.

OK so heres my two cents. I just use plain ol baby oil. I put enough in my daughters hair and just slicked it back in a ponytail for a week. I did it that long to make sure the nits that hatched got killed also. I did not have to repeat anything they were all dead.
Good luck

F.,
I ran a shelter for runaway and homeless youth for 13 years, and treated lice frequently. All the above methods work well. (be sure to treat your whole house.) I learned this trick from the health department nurse.

To catch a live crawling louse in someone's hair, wrap a piece of scotch tape around your finger, have someone else comb through the hair, parting a few strands at a time, then when you spot one, squash the crawling louse with the tape, which is wrapped around your finger. Far easier than tweezers, and faster. I've done it many times.

Then you can re-wash the hair if needed. Good luck to you, and remember, most of us have dealt with this before, it does not reflect poorly on your skills as a mother, housekeeper, etc.

Arbonne's Self-Adjusting Shampoo with Tea Tree Oil will help and is alot safer than other products on the market for it. Tea Tree Oil is a a natural solution that drives lice away if you've got 'em, and keeps 'em away if you don't. They've been using it for lice in Europe for years.

I sell Arbonne products so please feel free to contact me if you would like more information or if I can be of any futher help.

Good Luck!

I remember catching lice in school and this is what my mother did and got rid of them really fast.

she would soak my hair from the roots is achohol, just plain old acohol from your first aid kit, then wrap a shower cap or a towel (as if you had just gotten out of the shower) around your head and let it be for a couple of hours.

then wash as usual...

the alcohol creates heat which kills the lice and eggs and everything...

good luck

My son was sent home from school with lice a couple of months ago. They suggested covering his head in peanut butter (it smothers the bugs), covering that with plastic wrap and then I put a hat on him to keep his hands out of it. Leave on for 2 hours. This worked for the bugs but didn't do anything for the unhatched eggs; they hatched a day later. Unfortunately, we fought those lice for a week before I shaved his head. I hope you have better luck than we did.

If you want something that works quickly and nontoxic, then check out Lice R Gone by Safesolutions. The website is www.licergone.com It kills the bugs, nits, everything in about 10 minutes. I have tried the other things such as mayo, vinegar (my daughters complained it burned) as well as prescription meds that have to be left on overnight. Lice R Gone is the only thing I will use now. Yes it is a bit pricey, but so totally worth it to not have to go through hours of treatment, and it's all natural. Plus in my experience there haven't even been any nits left to comb out (it dissolves the nit glue). If you have pets and have an emergency flea situation, I have used it on both cats and dogs and the fleas die and fall off almost on contact. I love how effective and safe this stuff is, I believe you'll be happy with the results if you give it a try!

I haven't used this, but a neighbor used mayonnaise as a treatment. You cover the hair in pure mayonnaise, wrap the hair in cellophane and have your daughter watch a movie or two.
You'll then want to wash in HOT anything she's worn or slept in. Perhaps other moms who have dealt with them can give you more tips.

Good luck!

Here's an article with steps on mayonnaise..

the mayo solution mainly works because of the vinegar in the mayo. Try just vinegar before you do the mayo suggestions. Just put her head over a sink and pour the vinegar over it. The acid should remove the live bugs and make the environment inhospitable for the eggs. The mayo method is a PAIN to wash out of her hair. Also, lice prefer long, clean hair. Your 18 month old probably doesn't have enough hair to make her head appealing to them, but I'd still be cautious just in case.

You will think I am crazy, but this worked perfectly, and it worked the FIRST TIME! (We had been trying to get rid of lice with "rid" and the other OTC treatments, but it did not work...)

You will need:
Amber Listerine
White Vinegar
Denorex Shampoo
Suave Coconut Conditioner
Tea Tree Oil (at walmart)
Lysol
Nit Comb (metal)
Shower Cap (for all those with hair in family)

1. Saturate hair with Listerine by pouring it in hair over tub. Wring out, put shower cap on. Leave in 2 hours 15 minutes. (This kills the live bugs)
2. Rinse out with Vinegar. (The same way you did the Listerine) Leave it in hair for 2hours with shower cap on. (This dissolves the egg glue)
3. Get in the shower and wash hair with Denorex shampoo, then condition with the coconut conditioner mixed with tea tree oil. Take the nit comb and start going through hair. (this is a trial run)
4. After out of the shower, run the nit comb through hair like your life depended on it.
5. Repeat Listerine for the next 10 days (just in case you missed an egg.)
6. Spray Lysol all over EVERYTHING, wait till it is dry, then vacuum. Also, wash EVERYTHING in hot water that can be washed. Remember to do the car too!

This worked like gang busters! You will want to use up the denorex shampoo because this process will give you dandruff. But, in my book, dandruff is better than lice ANY DAY!
I finally got Garnier Fructice 2in1 shampoo for dandruff. That has worked best for dandruff that I have found - amazingly!

I know this sounds crazy, but I will stand by this technique until the end of time.

you can put olive oil on her hair and let it set for 30 minutes to an hour. Use a flea comb to go through sections of her hair to get out the lice and eggs. Wash out her hair with dish liquid and rinse with vinager. Repeat everyday until you get no more lice.It takes longer but you dont have to worry about chemicals and the effects of them

Use about two tablespoons of your normal shampoo add about six tablespoons of oil I used virgin oil, but any would do cover everyones head with it place a shower cap on the head putting all of the hair in the shower cap leave on for a least one hour and wash out. Then follow up with some Tree Tea oil shampoo at least once a week. The benefits to you is you have now just recieved a spa hot oil treatment for just pennies instead of dollars. Good luck

Soak her entire head in olive oil, put a shower cap or plastic bag over her hair, and leave it on for several hours. She can even sleep with it on. Repeat this process every 2-3 days for at least 3 weeks!!

In addition, mix tea tree oil in her shampoo, conditioner, and in a spray bottle of water. Spray this mixture on everything in your house that can't be washed in hot water. I suggest spraying her mattress and pillow several times a week for the same time period. You should even spray the carpets, couches, and seats in your car.

My friend battled head lice with her 2 girls all summer long, her oldest brought it home from church camp. After spending lots of money and using several harsh products, this is what finally worked for her. Now with her kids in school every day, she continues to use the tea tree oil when washing and spraying their hair to style, so far this has prevented them from bringing it back home.

None of these products will harm the baby either.

The best thing we found was a Robi-Comb. We got it at Walgreens for about $30.00. It catches the bugs in it's teeth. You have to use it everyday for 3 weeks or longer. But it works. No Chemicals, just a little time. We even let the kids comb our hair with it, just to make sure. It was the best $30.00 I have spent.

we had a run of this in elementary school-went to a homemade concoction of baby shampoo, glycerin and te tree oil.

Our girls shampooed with it until they left that school with a chronic problem!

This is not only natural but it was the ONLY thing that took care of the lice :)

-Cover your childs hair in mayo, like a whole jar
-Cover your childs hair with a plastic shower cap, with all the hair tucked under it.
-Leave it for an hour or longer
-Wash the hair
-PULL OUT (I USED TWEEZERS FOR THE BUGS ON THE SCALP) EVERY BUG, EGG, ANYTHING!
-If you miss some eggs, they will hatch and you'll have to do the ENTIRE thing over again

Good luck! The mayo smuthers the bugs and kills the live ones, but remember the stinkin eggs, thats the kicker. Oh and I have three other children, and none of them have gotten lice. So, I would not worry with the baby until you notice something.
