Julianna has recently started pulling out her hair on the sides. Her hair did fall out on the sides but it starting to grow back in. It don't seem like it hurts her when she does it but in my opinion its not healty. Most of the time she does it is when she is laying down or be relaxing. I do not know what to do to stop her from pulling out her hair. I dont know why she is doing it either? Any sugguestions to get her to stop would be nice.

What can I do next?

I haven't been through this personally. But last week the Sears family of Dr's was on Dr. Phil and this was one of the cases they talked about. They said that it could be because of a recent change or stress in the childs life. So see when she does or think of what happened when it started to see if you can help her.

My daughter Caitlin did the same thing. She would do it when she was frustrated or tired. I think it is just something they do as a comfort thing. She will outgrow it soon, Caitlin did shortyly after she started doing it. I just kept pulling her hand away when she would do it. Or give her something to hold in her hand. If she sees that she gets attention from it then she will keep doing it. Believe me, this is what Caitlin did. It was hard not to pay attention because you dont want them to be bald. Just quietly pull her hand away and give her something else. Good luck. :0)

I used to work at a pharmacy and there was a child that had the same problem and the mother told me that it only happened when the child was sleeping and she said the only thing that helped was she put gloves on the child before she went to sleep and after awhile the child stopped pulling her hair out.

My 2 year old son does this too. It seems to be a comfort thing, he twists his hair and then pulls a piece out, and he used to put the hair in his mouth. (It seems like this would hurt, but he doesn't mind). Last fall he had a patch on top that was pretty stubbly. From what I have read, it's actually pretty normal for a child to adopt this kind of comfort behavior. Some kids suck their thumb, some need a blankie, etc. Some kids do much stranger things than pull on their hair! They grow out of it eventually. I don't think there's anything you can do to stop it. I try not to worry about it. Their hair may be a mess, but they are happy and healthy, it could be much worse!

There is a psychological disease that is hereditary: trichotillomania I believe. But if you don't do it then I'm guessing it's stress. But if it doesn't stop and it really bothers you I'd see a doctor.
