How to Introduce Milk

My baby has been exclusively breastfed since birth. She tried formula once or twice for various reasons but never really took to it. We are nearing one years old and I am trying to figure out the best way to introduce her to milk. She will take a sippy cup really well, but only if it has juice in it (more specically white grape juice). I have attempted to give her milk a few times (with the pedi's approval) but she does not like it. So, how do you momma's do it?

What can I do next?

I always mixed the formula with milk about 1/2 and 1/2 and gradually put let formula and even warmed it up. You might try to do it in a bottle if there is no way she will take in a cup then later try it in a cup again. Just a thought. It took me about a week to transition to reg milk. I hope this helps and good luck.

My son just turned one last month, and has not had any formula. What we did to get him used to milk, was to have him try a sip or two a day, and then give him water. At first, he would look at me like I was trying to poison him! He did get used to the taste though, and it helped to let the milk sit out for 15 minutes or so, because he was used to warm milk from the tap, not cold milk from the fridge. He loves water to drink, and he always has a sippy full of water available for him to drink throughout the day. We also started having it as an option during meals. It took about a month, but now he will drink about 4-5 ounces of whole milk in a day.. sometimes more.

I checked with my pediatrician at his one year checkup, and she said that babies his age should have 3-4 servings of dairy a day. So, nursing fills two of those servings for us (we're down to an AM and PM nursing session!), and he eats plenty of cheese and a serving of yogurt every day. So, any milk that he drinks at this point is extra. Once we are done breastfeeding, I think that he will have enough dairy in his diet between milk, cheese, and yogurt to be fine.

So, just keep offering, and I wouldn't push it, unless you are wanting to be finished nursing soon. I'm gradually weaning my son, and it has gone well so far.

Hope this helps!

I agree with mixing the breast milk and regular milk at first and gradually putting more reg milk in the cup as she gets better at taking it. My first would not take reg milk well at all and was exclusively breastfed. I would actually make her a milkshake with just ice, whole milk and a banana blended in the blender every morning to get her to get her milk in. I was also nursing her at the same time and she ate yogurt which helped with her daily requirements. As she got older, she just transitioned into drinking reg milk in cereal and I guess just realized she liked it. She actually LOVES milk today, so I know the issue you are dealing with will work itself out. Hope this helps and good luck!! :)
