How to Give Meds to 14 Month Old

My 14 month old hates anti-biotics. We were just put on a 10-day course and gave the first dose tonight. It was not pretty. We had it flavored with grape, and he likes the grape-flavored tylenol. Any advice on how to give an unwilling participant his meds?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

My husband figured out a way! Lay baby down with arms secured, as before. Put paci in mouth and give meds by lifting paci a little and administering meds at side of mouth then reinsert paci. Baby still not loving the meds, but he no longer tries to get away and does not cry!

I have to put all of my 18 month olds meds into some milk..sometimes very chocolate milk..to get her to take it. It has never been a problem for us to do that, but some people worry about their kids drinking it all. I only use about 4 oz. and give it to her at a time when I know she will drink at least that much, so it works for us. Good luck..I know this is not fun!! I am such a fan of antibiotic shots..I beg for them every time, just to avoid this!!! ~A.~

I've always found success by placing the dropper beside the tongue (almost under it) towards the back of the mouth. As soon as you squeeze the dropper, a soft blow (like blowing a kiss) to his face will force him to swallow.

HTH!

Chck with doctor or pharmacy first but some meds can be mied in a drink. Another way my mom used on me was liquid meds in smal cup then water in another small cup and strong flavored strong smelling liquid in third larger cup. she would then hold my nose while i downed he med then the water the same without everletting go of my nose and then while I was drinking the strong stuff she would let go of my nose. ( dr pepper, coke, orange juice all work well, Milk will also work but you will need a little larger cup of water between meds and the milk) Any easy way to hold arms down if you hoise the other suggestions is to tke a pillow case put the open end around arms behind back and lay the baby on back. I hope it helps and GOOD LUCK.

What is generally successful for me is to add a fruit flavored medicine to a very small amount of juice when he is thirsty. Or, I add it to a small amoutn of applesauce which I know he will eat when hungry. Good luck, it can be tricky!

Sometimes for the benefit of making sure it gets taken, and the child gets well, you just have to force it down! My baby loves meds, but the 14 month old that I babysit spits EVERYTHING out, so when it's time for meds, we literally have to shove it down and hold her mouth shut so that it goes down. BTW, I was told to do this by the mom, so I'm not just being mean here. lol!
It's for their own good sometimes.

I do the same as the first poster except I use less milk to make sure my son drinks it all. I probably only mix it with about 1 oz of milk at a time I know he is thirsty. Sometimes, I mix it in applesauce or yogurt, but I have to be sure that he is hungry first. This is the only way he will take meds... it is a challenge!
