Our beloved yellow Lab passed away last month. But his fleas are still around. We've already bombed the house twice and had the exterminator out. They just keep coming back, although it's less and less. Can anyone help me? I've been using this white powder that my friend gave me to sprinkle on the hardwood floors. It seems to help. But I would like other suggestions.
Yes, it was diatomaceous earth mixed with boric acid that my friend gave me. It has really worked. I want to thank you all for the suggestions. The fleas are 99.9 percent gone.
Borax works wonderful! Sprinkle it all over the place, let it sit. Vac everyday and throw away the bag each time!!!
After vac sprinkle more borax, it will work!

I dont want you to think that I am any kind if authority on this but I know how this can be so wanted to try to help on my way ~ natural way. Chirsthanimoms (sp?) are great for getting rid od insects. Pink Crape Myrtle are also. Yopu could put window boxes of ine type and then have arrangements of the ponk Crape Myrtles.
Hope this helps a little. Also WalMart now sells an defleaer & deticker that is natural. You could splige or just read which herbs are in it.

You may need to treat your yard. They may be coming in from outside.
Please don't use pesticides. Try sprinkling Borax powder all over the carpets. Clear everyone out first. Let it sit for a couple hours, then vacuum.
I've used the Raid Fumigator found in grocery stores. Put one in each room & be out of the house for 5 1/2 - 6 hours. No chemical smell. I think it works wonders. Used it once when I brought home a stray that had fleas & then again when I found a 2nd cockroach in the house.
Lots of people said Borax and I've heard that too- The house I bought a few years ago had fleas in it everywhere!
The thing that worked for me is going to be hard since your dog is gone but do you have any other animals at all?
What I did was buy Frontline. I put the frontline on the dog, the poor dog became a flea MAGNET for about 24 hours but every flea that jumped on him died as soon as it bit him and within 1 week all the fleas were gone (sadly maybe at my dog's expense) But I also sprinkled Borax around the outside of the house and maybe that helped too.

I want to say that I am very sorry for your loss. I at one time had a rotty and 7 children with a home that had fleas. Unfortunately the dog passed away and the fleas remained.
Many things you must do. So here is how you get rid of them.
1) bag every linen or clothing that was out of the dresser, laying on the floor, layin in the laundry room etc.
2) vaccum your house very good and when done(immediately) rid of your vacuum bag or empty the canister.
3) purchase Borax. It is a laundry booster and comes in a box.
4) sprinkle the borax thru your home. on the floors on your mattress, in the laundry room, in your closets. everywhere. You must leave it down for 5 days. ( iknow it sucks but this is what must be done to rid of them) Bombs are innefctive and will not work that much.
5) on day 5 vaccuum your entire home. get rid of the vac bag or empty the canister and rid of that bag with the canisters contents.
6) in hot water, wash everything that you bagged up. (linens, clothes, etc)
7) mop any tile with bleach and hot water.
Fleas are very fierce and tough. The dont like to play. Therefore, you must wage war on them. This will grid of them forever.

We had fleas, and tried to take care of it ourselves, to no avail. We went to homeguard, who give you a guarantee that they will be gone, But you have to get the one year plan, because it takes time for the eggs to hatch and they have stuff that sprays everything and turns to a powder and is safe. They are worth it. Good Luck.
It's already done, so I would not stress over it, but I would NOT NOT NOT use any more chemicals in the house....especially one in which a child lives. There are MANY safe alternatives that will work just as well if not better -and will not put you or your family at risk. Since the main host (yo are all still serving as 2ndary hosts now!) is not there, this will be even easier!
You can do a very easy, quick search online for natural flea control, but I can tell you what has worked for me. I bought FOOD GRADE Diatomaceous Earth (known as DE), also called Fossil Shell Flour from a website (dirtworks.com). It comes in a powder that you VERY LIGHTLY dust the entire house and yard. The crushed fossil shells have microscopic sharp edges that cut the shells of anything with a hard shell such as fleas, ticks, bed bugs, ants, spiders, roaches...anything with a hard shell. It is entirely safe for all people. The only precaution is to wear a dust mask to avoid breathing the dust when applying.
Other options include sprinkling the entire carpet with salt, which will have a drying effect or using BORAX, which is ok, but not as safe... I wouldn't let my litle one on the floor (or any other pets).
Honestly, the DE will safely and naturaly solve your problem - and with very little cost. I bought a 5 lb bag with a 'puffer' applicator and it was maybe $25?? Free shipping. I used less than a pound in a year and have given several times to friends. Just make sure you buy FOOD GRADE only... the chemical stuff they sel for pool filters is NOT safe.
I just read your other post and wanted to add that my husband takes it in some juice too! He says it helps him keep 'clean'! Healthy websites say so too!

So sorry to hear about your loss. My yellow lab just turned 5 in Jan.. So anyway for starters go to Walmart and get a bag of the stuff you put in yards for fleas, ticks, ants, bugs, etc.. I can't remember the name of it. Put it all around the outside of your house. Then wash your curtains, rugs, and if your dog had any stuffed toys throw them out or wash them in hot water. Then go to the Farm Store and purchase the home Spray for Fleas. I promise it works. I have been battling fleas off and on but I do know this works. Also clean any of your floors you can with vinegar. I am in the proccess of finding one of those plug ins that keep mice, rats, and roaches away. My brother had one and he said it even kept the fleas away. He had two beagles that ran in and out when ever they wanted and neither of them ever had fleas and were never treated for them. He swore that the plug in thing really worked. Again so sorry about your loss.
When we got fleas from dogsitting we just made a spray bottle of apple cider vinegar and sprayed down the whole hose 2 times a day. vinegar kills adult fleas but leaves the eggs so you have to do this for a week solid to really get rid of them (though we did if for 2 weeks after we didn't find any just to be sure...)
So sorry to hear about your lab. I had the same problem with fleas and found out that they were hanging out in my yard. They would attach themselves to socks, pants etc. and make their way back into the house. I finally had the yard sprayed and that did the trick. Good luck.
