How to Get Potty Trained on Public Toilets

Hi Moms,
I have a 3-year-old son who is in the midst of potty training. He does pretty well at home, and he's going out of the house with just underwear (no diaper). So far, no accidents in public. We are always asking him if he wants to use the potty when we get somewhere (mall, restaurant) and have taken him with us into a booth to make him "try". He will not sit on the big public toilet.

What do other moms do? I've contemplated taking our training potty seat that fits on the regular toilet seat, but it's too big to lug around. I've seen the folding potty seats on-line and wonder if they work and if they are even comfortable! I'd appreciate any advice and recommendations! Thanks in advance!

What can I do next?

hi , your son is perfectly able to balance on a normal toilet seat. remove the training seat at home :)...did your mom use one for you? mine did not..it is nice but actually not needed. they can balance well on a swing right? same goes for the toilet. sorry you spent the money :)

The same goes for sippy cups, twisted spoons, velcro shoes and later when he is a teen automatic gears...teach them the normal way and you wont ever feel you are lugging half your home with you when you go out.nor will he feel" handicapped" with out his tools.

I had the folding travel potty seat and it was great. Especially since both of my munchkins were on the petite side at that age-it kept them from falling in and made them feel secure on the big seat. I would put down the paper cover, then the potty seat. I also liked it since they weren't touching the actual toilet bowl with their hands. I think we found it at Babies R us. I know one step ahead carries them online.

Potty on the Go or "On The Go Potty" products are GREAT! We have those in our van and my Mom's car. THIS is a great thing... all kids go through aversion to public toilets. It WILL pass. It's a phase.

In the meantime, our girl would go in the portable folding potty in our car. No problem. No anguish. No hassle. She can still use it if a public place is not available or just very unsanitary and stink, or if we are on the road & there is just no toilet place anywhere close by,we just pull over and she can pee. And she is 5 years old now. It's great for emergencies.

It's a product that lasts a long time, no matter what age, as you can see. We had ours since our girl was 2 years old.

I recommend it. There are many different brands... on Amazon.com

You can even carry it in a tote bag with you if you want... which all Moms usually lug around anyway, since we have kids. It's not a bulky thing. We LOVE that we got ours. It has been a life saver in MANY situations.

My girl, at about 2 years old, was literally afraid of public toilets... the smell, the noise, and the crowded stall. I never "forced" her or punished her or made her go. (I myself didn't even want to go in some of these stink messy public toilets). It's not big deal... they grow out of it. No worries. LOTS of kids go through this. My feeling is, why force it and make them then they have an accident in the middle of the mall... this is worse AND it embarrasses them, and what a mess to clean if in a store or in the car!

Good luck,
Susan

Get one of the folding ones if you need to. Both of my kids never feared public or big toilets so I don't have personal experience advice. But I have a 3 year old and if I say, "Do you need to go to the bathroom?" He always says no. Regardless if he really needs to go. So, I keep a watch on how long it has been and his fluid intake and if I think he should need to go, I just say, "cmon, let's go potty" or "do you want to go in this bathroom or that bathroom" never making a big deal about where we are going, ie, at the store, outhouse, mall, restaurant, etc.. A Pediatrician told me recently, that parents (and you may or may not be doing this, but watch yourself and see) tend to make kids afraid of public bathrooms by saying don't touch this, don't touch that, oh that is gross!, etc.. then the kids become fearful because of our behaivor. I know you said he just doesn't like the big toilets but let him sit on it and hold on to it with his hands - it's not a big deal - you can wash his hands good when you are done. I know with my first, I cringed at first at the thought of her touching a public toilet, but I got over that fast and carried around Wet One's with me to do a good wipe down on her hands when we were done.

Hope that helps a little!
M.

My son was the same way and we would let him stand on the seat and pee standing up... pooping is different of course and he just barely started going in public if he needs to and he is 4. But as far as going pee goes, I (still) just have him stand on the seat and he aims it into the toilet - when he was 2 of course we had to help him with the aiming but it worked out great for us. He was potty trained to pee sitting down at first but now he will do it either way. Good luck to you!!

Hi M., since he is training at a late age, I wouldn't bother with toilet tops and other things, I was just put him on the public toilet. Two things i want to help you with, first of all don't ask him if he wants to to go, tell him he is going, second of all there should never be the words he.she won't or will not, becasue they are not in charge, you are, you just sit him on the toilet, and that's that. All 3 of my kids were using the toilet at home and in bublic before they were 2, at 3 he just needs to do it. When my kids were 19, and 20/21 months I took their little potty chair with me in our van every where we went, but they got to big for it, so they didn't have a choice but to use that batroom where ever we were at. We just potty trained my son and he was very particular too. He would only go potty on the "big" potty but with one of those cushy seats w/ handles. So we bought an extra one and started carrying a backpack instead of diaper bag and stuffed it in there. Yes it was a pain, but it worked wonders and now he only needs it when he's going poop and will pee on the "big" potty w/o his seat too. Be patient and willing to make some sacrifices for what his needs are for the next couple of months. Like my inlaws told me, he won't be 18 years old and potty training, so just hang in there.
