How to Clean Pee from a Mattress?

Updated on July 11, 2008

OK, well I know the best thing would be not to let the pee get on the mattress in the first place, but when I stripped the bed this morning, the pad was not there. My oldest still has accidents occassionally. Not worried about that, but how do I clean it?

This morning I covered the wet spot with 2 boxes of baking soda. I'm planning on vacuuming it up when I get home.

Any other ideas?

My grandmother swore by good, old-fashioned sunlight. Texas has plenty of that,it's free and ecologically sound. It gets rid of odors and leaves an outdoorsy fresh sunny smell. Good idea with the baking soda. CB

okay so i found a great formula that works miracles on pee Get excited cause you no longer have to worry about lingering smells.

1 regular size bottle of peroxicide
2 tsps of baking soda
and 2 drops of your dish liquid

Get an empty spray bottle and keep the leftover formula under the sink.

I stir the ingredients in a bowl as you are not to shake and pour into the bottle.

Now the area that needs to be treated, soak up the pee with a towel and spray or dump a good bit of the formula on the spot I usually soak it pretty good let it dry and smells all gone.

this also works great for animal accidents as well.

There is a cleaner in the pet department at Wal-Mart and at Petsmart. It is called "Out". It is live bacteria spray. It is completely safe. The bacteria gets rid of the urine completely. You won't have the yellow stains on the mattress left behind or the smell. Just follow the the directions. It also smells good, kind of like Dreft baby detergent. And to prevent future clean ups, I always had two crib pads on my children's beds, one under the fitted sheet and one on top of the fitted sheet. That made my life a little bit easier.

I just have to second the suggestion to try Nature's Miracle. My 7 year old who breezed through potty training let loose on his mattress this past year. I didn't even have a pad in place. I thought purchasing a new mattress was in our future! After drying it as well as I could, I moved the mattress into our garage and sprayed it with Nature's Miracle once a day for about 3 days. Then I let it dry for a day or two. This mattress had a pillow top and I thought it was a goner but, amazingly, NO pee smell! AND I also used Nature's Miracle when my son got the tummy flu and threw up all over our couch. It worked like a dream! I'm sold on the stuff! It has saved us a lot of money. You can buy it at a pet store for around $8. A little expensive but cheaper than a mattress! ;-)

Hi C.
Try carpet cleaner really!Dollar tree $1.00.Follow directions spray on let sit then wipe off to get stain out. Then if needed vacum off.Totally off the subject but I have used the off brand (scrubbing bubbles dollar tree also)for cleaning my indoor barbque have not tried yet on the outdoor barbque.Back to the subject at hand after the chemical has been removed from the matress you can use febreeze and yes dollar tree has an off brand for that also spray on this will take away any lingering odors and help the area dry. Please make sure that there is not any of the carpet chemical left I am scared that the chemicals wont mix hope you know what I mean.Good Luck this should do the trick.

Happens in my house. I have two bed-wetters. I use Sol-U-Mel from Melaleuca, Inc. (www.melaleuca.com). It is the best thing for that because not only does it clean but also disinfects and takes out ALL odors!! It is incredible stuff!

I even have three cats and with them you can always tell when something smells like pee - they can't stop sniffing at it and will sometimes go at the spot too. With the Sol-U-Mel, I never have a problem and even my cats can't smell the pee afterwards. That's proof to me!

Good luck,
J.

You did not say what kind of mattress (foam or box spring or pillow top). I used laundry soap on top really soaked that spot, then my husband took it to the back yard and let the sun so its work. You will be surprised how the sun works at not only drying it but takes the smell out to. I am aware of products they sell at nursing homes but that has an odor I do not like. He/she may need to sleep in a sleeping bag until the mattress is ready, depending on how deep the pee is in the mattress and wet it got while cleaning it. One day may be fine, but do not leave it out after the sun goes down.

What works for me is to scrub it good with a wet and soapy towel and then rub in the baking soda, not just pour it on. Be sure to use a fan to dry it/air it out.

Good luck.

Denver Mattress sells a mattress cleaning kit that has 2 different solutions (depending on what the stain is). I've used the one for urine several times and it appears to work. Tt does take a few applicaitons, but is not as harsh as the steam cleaner.

If you can take the mattress outside and spray amonia on it and let it sun. do it in the morning and let it sit thru the afternoon. the smell of the amonia dissapates rather quickly and it should also get the urine smell out. It also works great on old urine stains it takes the yellow out of the material.

Resolve Pet Stain and Odor Remover works really well for all my stain needs. Once you have removed the urine from the mattress you may want to get one of those plastic mattress covers that goes over the whole mattress. That way you don't have to worry about the pad moving. That's what I used when my youngest was still wetting the bed.

Hi. I know all too well what you are dealing with. I hate to admit my mom is right, lol, but truly, the best cleaner to remove urine is vinegar. After you vacuum the mattress, then pour vinegar on the area and let it dry either with a fan blowing on it or outside, if that's possible. You may need to use a bit more baking soda afterwards. It also works great in cleaning pet urine odors as well.

If the baking soda doesn't work you may want to try Natures Miracle. You can find it at any pet store. It is an enzyme based cleaner so it completely eliminates the odor of urine and it works pretty good on the stain too. I use it for my pet stains and kid stains, lol! It really works but you have to follow the directions to a tee!

The best thing my mother would do was to sit our mattresses out in the natural sunlight and just let the sun absorb the smell and dry it out. She also would saturate the spot with baking soda as you have done, then sit it out in the sun.

You might also try a pet stain remover..it couldnt hurt.

C., what you should've done before you left home was to spray some Febreeze on it and let the matress air out. Baking Soda....never heard of that one. Depending on how soaked the matress was, the baking soda is only gonna cake up and probably, look like cake mix. I really can't speak on that one, but my mother use to take the matress outside and let the wind hit it for a couple hours. Now I ain't got time to drag no matress outside, so I use the Febreeze or even Lysol.

You can also, before you go to work, clean the area with soap and water, once you get home...it's dry and then spray the Febreeze on it.

You can use a high-foam carpet shampoo as well.
Always work a stain from the outside in and keep at it each day until you have it beat.
The baking soda is also excellent, especially for the odour.

Hi -

I have not tried it on pee spots, but 20 Mule Team Borax (a laundry additive) works GREAT on just about everything. There is a spot on the box that discusses removing pee smell/stains.

You can buy it at your grocery store, Wal-Mart or Target. It will be near the powdered bleaches.

Good luck!
