I was cleaning out my kids movie storage and discovered that some are very dusty from not being put back. Just wipe them or use some sort of spray cleaner.
I was told buy a Geek Squad guy to just use glasses cleaner with a mirco-fiber cloth (like you get for cleaning glasses). We keep a cloth buy our tv so when a disc has something on it we can just wipe it clean and this has worked. Just remember to only wipe from the inside straight out, never in circulat motions as that can rub the dirt on the disc and sratch it more.
Just wipe with rubbing alcohol. Do NOT use toothpaste to fill in scratches. Not unless you want your DVD player or CD player gummed up from it. DVD and CD players use a laser to read the disc, meaning that it will heat up any toothpaste on the disc causing it to drip into the inner workings which will cause bigger problems in the long run. Instead, if you have some with scratches, don't throw them out. Get the SkipDr (my kids call it the Doofensmirtz evil de-scratchinator). It costs about $45 but it pays for itself on the first use at least it did for us since the first thing we salvaged was a $50 video game. We've since salvaged several more video games and movies. This is a good thing to have until they figure out how to make DVD's and CD's and video game discs more durable.
I bought something at Staples for aobut 19 bucks which has restored some scratched and dirtly CD's and DVD's
my husband is a techy and told me to wash them with plain soap and water and dry with a soft towel
My husband is a Computer Tech. Just wash them with alcohol and a paper towel. If scratched and skipping, sometimes a smooth white toothpaste smeared over the surface and wiped clean will fill in the grooves and stop the skipping.
I would just wipe them off... if any are really scratched you can take them to a hastings or pawn shop.... Hasting I know has a resurfacer, and charges $1.99 per disk to repair. Im not sure about pawn shops, but I know a lot of them will do it.
