My cat got locked in the house when we were out of town and she peed on the couch cushion. It was already dry so it smelled really strong by the time we got home. I tried making a paste wiht baking soda and peroxide, letting it sit overnight and then vacuumed it off. i can still smell it! any other ideas???

What can I do next?

I have recently discovered OxyClean. It's amazing! I use it on my baby's clothes. Every once in a while I'll find a stained onesie that's been sitting in the dirty clothes for a while. I just soaked it for 10-15 minutes and like magic, it's gone. I love OxyClean. Maybe you can take the cushion cover off and soak it or you can do spot treatments as well.

There is a product called Dumb Cat (just google it and then order online. It can be hard to find) This is the only thing that works. IT's a spray, it gets out odor and the cat will stop peeing in that spot, too, because it's a pheromone-based spray blah blah blah. It really works.

C.,
Windex is awesome. Smell & stains come out. Something in the amonia gets it out. Works on carpet, mattresses (yes our cat peed on our bed when we left town and the windex took out the smell)He didn't even try to cover it up anymore like cats will do when they smell something.
Good luck,
M.

Hi C.,
Oops. Sorry to hear about your troubles.
I'm not sure or not if you can really get the odor out. It's better if you do not use anything to "cover" the stain or odor with something first before treating it. You should go to your local vet office and purchase an Odor Neutralizer. You may be able to find something at a pet store but I would trust a clinic more. It's best if organic odors like pet urine, poop or blood to be neutralized instead of covered up. It breaks down the particles that makes the odor.
I would then saturated the area really well and then cover with a dry towel and press down to soak up some of the liquid. Then cover with a dry towel overnight and allow to air dry or if possible set out in the sun. Making sure the kitty doesn't strike twice! :)
Hope this helps,
C.

My best advice is to get a new couch - cat pee is one of those thigns that no metter how much you scrub, clean etc. the smell NEVER seems to come out. I had a cat for years and I tried everything and finally determined that once you put together all the money you spend on products that don't work you could have bought a new couch!

I use Sol U Mel. It's an AWESOME product! It gets the stain and the smell out. It also won't hurt your cat or children. It's worked on dog vomit, pee, medicine stains, hot wing sauce stains and red wine...it works great! You can also use it on your clothes.

I'd be more than happy to tell you where you can buy it.

Give me a shout!

They sell a product called Kidz N Petz at Walmart for around $4-5. I have not used it on cat pee but I have used it on toddler pee on the couch and dog pee from my mom's over excited dog. It worked excellent on both. I found it at Walmart on the bottom shelf in the cleaning section maybe by carpet powder.

Good luck!

I would remove the cushion from the cover send the cover through the wash. Then order the inner portion that you removed and throw the old one out. This will probably be the only way to do it. I have purchased any and every product to get cat pee smell out and none of them work 100%. If it is on the regular part of the couch and not just the cushion definately hire a professional to do that part, making sure it is one who has a guarranty that the smell will not remain. Best of luck.

I second Nature's Miracle from Petsmart. This stuff is the best - gets out stains and gets rid of the smell. It's in a white bottle with red writing - I just used it last night cause our cat threw up on our new rug. If you have animals, it's a must have!

Hi, There is a product at Petsmart and Petco called Natures Miracle, they make a product called just for cats but the regular cleaner works also if they dont have the cat one. This stuff is the BEST for cat pee or dog pee or any kind of smelly stuff.
When you buy it buy the gallon because you have to SOAK the area with the product to go down to the same areas that the pee went. When it is COMPLETELY dry this is when the smell will be gone......I promise!!!! good luck

cat pee is the hardest to get out of anything. My mother in law's cat peed on her couch and she tried everything and nothing worked. She finally just went and got another couch. My cat peed on our floor at our old apartment by the back door a few times while she was in heat and we got carpet cleaners to come in a few times and it still didn't get the smell away. Cat pee is the worse.

Okay, I have two suggestions. I've recently discovered "Urine Eliminator" by Rug Doctor. It's in all the grocery stores that have the Rug Doctor rug shampooer. It's right with the machines and all the shampoo. Look for it. It works like a charm. Follow the directions, though- you have to use a wet towel on it for like 24 hours (and I put something heavy on top of it). The other thing I've done (with a couch, specifically) is if it is a couch with separate cushions, check to see if it has zippers on the cushions. If so, zipper off the cover and put it in the washing machine on delicate or low or whatever. I used regular laundry detergent on mine. You can choose whether or not to put in the dryer (on the lowest setting or dry it outside over the fence or whatever). There may be some slight shrinking (hopefully not bad-mine was fine. The bigger problem is actually the foam or soft material inside the cushion. All you have to do is look at it and they're usually like a firm foam square with some baffling (?- the fuzzy white stuff) over it. Just tear off the old baffling and cut out the damaged foam part (only the part that smells- probably a good chunk) and replace it wth new. Just go to Michaels or one of those places and buy new stuff. It really isn't that hard- I did it twice. The third time my pet did it, I threw away the couch and got leather. Actually, I had to remove all the staples from one part of the couch and re-staple it up- uggg!
