How to Amuse 15-Month Old That Doesn't like Long Car Rides

My 15-month old does not like to be in the car for more than an hour at a time. We would really like to take some road trips (even just if it's two or three hours away)but it is so frustrating for everyone. I cannot sit in the back either, because I don't fit between the two car seats. Any suggestions? BTW, I'm not totally opposed to a DVD player, but I prefer something else other than mindless cartoons. Thanks for any suggestions.

What can I do next?

Hi Denise -

We ARE totally opposed to the 'dvd' players in the car - and we travel weekly!! We also do 4-5 trips a year that are 14+ hours each way - so we have a 'plan' down.

Two weeks prior <or earlier> we start packing odd backpacks and duff bags. Small toys, a small photo album, books, planes, cars, finger pupets, flash cards they have NOT seen, memo pads and a new mini pen, you get the idea......each bag is different and they don't know how many bags there are. Sometimes we get to 'Granny's' house using only one bag - sometimes it takes two or three. When you make stops at restops etc. there is minor clean up - but for the peace and enjoyment you will find on the ride - each year gets BETTER and BETTER and the clean up is less and less - as they WILL help you put the things back in the bags. Mini cameras and binoculars are real favs too!! ALSO - when stuck in traffic - as the children are 1 & 3, try I spy with things IN the car. I see something "color of their shoes" - then their pants, your coat etc. Make sure to show them things OUTSIDE the car, so as they get older they will enjoy the views........ GOOD LUCK!!

Don't do mindless cartoons. Get Signing Time dvds, Leapfrog learning dvds, and so forth. Your local library should have a wealth of them to choose from.

An etch-a-sketch, lab table to color on and eat snacks on would help too.

Then again if you want to just go visit someone then consider traveling at night while your little one sleeps.

Hi. My baby really loves the Baby Einstein music CDS. I have the Playtime and the Travel ones. The music is upbeat, and even my sometimes cranky husband commented that it was really hard to be in a bad mood while listening to the CDs. It's just soft, fun music that's gentle to ears.

My daughter was the same way and I dreaded each time I would have to take her to Childrens Hospital of WI because it meant long painful rides for both of us! We ended up downgrading our car and got lucky that the one we bought had a DVD player in it. WOW- talk about total change in long car rides!!! I do not put it on though if we are only going to be in the car for 30 minutes unless she is overtired and I know it is the only way to get home and keep my sanity! lol

I was like you and did not want her to watch just mindless cartoons. I looked around for different DVDs and found that Baby Genius has some great ones that are fun as well as educational. Even Elmo is educational! Most DVDs are geared towards education as well as fun. Also there is Baby Mozart (my daughter does not like these though) that is very educational. Her favs for the car is her Baby Genius, Elmo and Barney. I also have a few mindless ones like Boobahs and such but she prefers the other ones. I even went and bought Smurfs (ok, I bought it for me but ya know! lol )but she is too young to get the meaning behind each story yet!

Other than a DVD player my daughter LOVES music... preferably Hip Hop/Rap! She loves the bass and will dance to it. I figure what difference does it make if it is Mozart or Snoop Dog (or whoever) as long as she is enjoying it and able to move and find comfort in it. She will actually sign to me to turn it up (she is delayed in speaking) and will keep signing until my eardrums feel like they will burst! lol I have tried to turn her on to country or even rock but she will not have it! lol Oh well!

Sometimes we also sing songs (her making noises) or I tell stories and nursery rhymes or play watch for certain things. I will say watch for the cow and when she sees it she will scream (ear piercing) so I know she found it. It helps if you know what might be coming up. With your son you might be asking right now and pointing to it and clapping saying We found it, but eventually he will catch on especially watching his older brother find things!

Remember that you are trying to have a nice road trip and if a DVD player is what keeps the trip being nice it is well worth it! I know my parents used to sit us in front of the tv every saturday morning for 6 hours while they slept and I feel I turned out fine... for the most part anyhow!

Good luck and many blessings to you and yours!

I think if you keep mindless cartoons to a minimum at home, and can find something somewhat educational (even sesame street, and barney have fun songs to learn), dvd players are key for long car rides, and plane rides! it keeps them occupied without you having to stop every two hours to switch out toys or what not. snacks allways help, i agree.

Hi Denise,

When my kids were little, we timed our "traveling hours" to coincide with sleeping patterns. One did not like traveling at all and was a late sleeper, so we would get going early and put her in her car seat in her jammies. She would continue to sleep through much of our rides. I also found that food helps the traveling time, making fun snacks to eat during the ride.

Hope that helps some.
