How Stupid Would This Be?... Need to Know ASAP Please...

I am SOOOOOOOO SICK. I'm not driving (I'd crash, seriously) to go to the store, and I'm waiting for my husband to get home to take me to the doctors... in the meantime, the ONLY medicine in my house that would help is Mucinex DM... is that going to lay me out? I wouldn't mind being a little drowsy if it meant my chest wasn't hurting so freaking bad... this is bronchitis or pneumonia or both, ugh, omg, ouchie...

So... should I take the Mucinex DM in the middle of the day home alone with my 21 month old? Or wait until 3pm and suffer with nothing? Seriously, what would you do??

Thanks :)

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

@LIsa, one of the 2 of those is also used as an antihistamine and I can't remember for the life of me if this was one that hypes me up or knocks me out :(

Thanks ladies, I realized I don't care, nothing can be worse than how I feel and I took it anyway... oooouch.

Aww Sorry honey :( if you lived near me I'd say bring roman over and I'd watch him so you could sleep.

Everyone reacts differently is there a warning on the bottle that says caution may cause drowsiness don't drive or operate machinery until you know how it will effect you? If it has a warning I would wait to take it go sit in a steamy bathroom it will help loosen things up. If it doesn't have a warning I'd take it but take the smallest dose if it doesn't make you sleepy and doesn't help you can always take the rest (ex. Benadryl says take 1-2 tsp for my 10 yr old if he takes 1 tsp and it doesn't help he gets that remaining tsp)

You sound like you got the nasty cold my hubby had last week :( I hope you feel better very soon!

Neither one of those drugs is an antihistimine. You are fine to take it now. It will not make you drowsy. I would in addition take some ibuprofen and/or tylenol, which will not make you sleepy either but may help relieve some pain. Drink lots of water/juices and I second the veg-ing out in front of the tv with a few toys out for the little one until your hubby gets home. I have been dealing with this same crud for two weeks and taking the mucinex myself. It doesn't work as well if you don't get enough fluids, so drink lots.
Feel better soon,

I'd take hot steamy showers (cough up all you can when you do) and keep a heating pad on my chest, sip water, tea, soup broth and run a humidifier in what ever room I was in.
(Before there were heating pads people used mustard plasters but you really have to be careful not to burn your skin with it - though the sensation of heat does feel wonderful.)
Mucinex is great for thinning the mucus which makes coughing more productive (can cough it up more easily).

Mucinex DM has Dextromethorphan and Guaifenisen....

Dextromethorphan "Dextromethorphan is used to temporarily relieve cough caused by the common cold, the flu, or other conditions. Dextromethorphan will relieve a cough but will not treat the cause of the cough or speed recovery. Dextromethorphan is in a class of medications called antitussives. It works by decreasing activity in the part of the brain that causes coughing."

Guafenisen is an expectorant that thins the mucus, making it easier to cough out the mucus.

I don't remember that it causes drowsiness, but that might be a side effect.

"Dizziness, drowsiness, nausea, and vomiting may occur. If any of these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor or pharmacist promptly."

Remember to drink plenty of water.... it needs the water to help thin the mucus so you can cough it out.

Is there a neighbor that can watch the little one so you can rest? I remember having pneumonia (twice!!!) with an 8 month old and the kids at school... not fun at all.

Mucinex DM is just guifessin with Dextromethorphithan (sp?).

The first is an expectorant to loosen phlegm and help you cough it up.

The second is a cough supressant to help quiet your cough. It's the same stuff in robitussin or dayquil.

Neither should make you sleepy.

If you are in pain, also take some Ibuprophen or some Tylenol.

I hope you feel better soon

Oh honey - I am sooo sorry you are sick!!!! still!!! this sucks!!!

I would not take anything until AFTER the doctor...you don't want the symptoms masked by the medicine. Wait - sorry - if Rob isn't due home until 3PM (damn I should just come down and take you!) take the mucinex but do NOT take any after this..

I don't think Mucinex DM will lay you out - but I don't know how you react to medications - it's not the night time one, right?

I know my GF Rosemary was sick for one week - it was horrible for her!!

Where are the days when Pharmacies would send out a delivery guy to bring you meds?... In South Africa you could call your Pharmacy, and for a fee, they would send a guy on a moped to bring your meds within an hour.

Do you have any essential oils? Eucalyptus would probably help you.

I've never felt dizzy in the least with any Mucinex.

If you have symptoms listed on the Mucinex box, I say take it.

Oh well you already took it ...... You could also go ask the nice lady across the street if she has anything to help you. But most Mucinex is 12 hour, so hubby will be home by then.

Hope you feel better! Old lady may have some nice brothy soup for you. I love a nice steamy mug of warm broth. I'll even eat cup-o-noodle and enjoy it.
