How Often Do You Wash Your Hair?

I know that we're not supposed to wash our hair everyday. I wash mine every other day. But in watching youtube hair tutorials lately, I hear lots of mention of only washing hair once a week.

By day two my bangs are noticably oily and if I don't wash it for three days all my hair looks flat out gross. I use a good conditioner in the shower and air dry my hair most of the time and only use a curling or flat iron once or twice a week, but my hair is still feeling really dry (before it gets oily, that is). What gives?!

So I'm curious. How often do you wash your hair? Are there tips I'm missing on how to keep hair from getting too oily between washes or how to wash more often without drying out hair? Any websites you know of for styling hair all cute while stretching out washings? Do you use a shower cap on the days you don't wash your hair and where do you get those?

Thanks for the help!

What can I do next?

I cleanse my hair about once a week, using a conditioning cleanser. I have always had compliments on my hair, and probably have the healthiest hair of anyone I know (other than my sister, who follows the same schedule I do.)

I always get a kick out of going for a haircut, as this is how the conversation goes- hairdresser: wow, you have really thick, healthy hair, what do you use on it? me: I use conditioning cleanser once a week, let it air dry, and that's pretty much it. hairdresser: you know, you really should use (fill in the blank with SOME product) in between washings....this leaves me laughing because didn't they just ask what I did with it because it looked nice and healthy?

Once a week?? My scalp would be so smelly! I usually wash every other day, sometimes I will go three days but by then my hair looks bad and my scalp smells. I can not imagine many people do it once a week.

I use a shampoo without sulfates. I think that is important. It doesn't strip all the oil.

I wash and blow dry mine every day. I've been doing this since high school, which was about 30 years ago. My hair is not at all damaged. Shiny, healthy, etc. I hardly ever get split ends. I don't think it's a big deal to wash it every day. I can't stand the way it feels even if I try to go one day without washing.

My friend doesn't wash hers every day, and she wears a shower cap and got it at Walgreens.

I wash my hair once or twice a week depending on what I've been doing. It will take a little time for your hair to adjust. Try a little face powder or those oil absorbing papers to get you through.

I used to have super dry hair that would get very oily in a couple days as well. It really is just about training your hair.

My hair is sooo much healthier and shiny and I never get split ends. My hairdresser always says I could go 6 months without a trim if I wanted because my hair is in the same condition every time she sees me.

I wash my hair once a week! My hair looks best a little messy :) day one I blow dry and straighten it, day two brush and pin it back to the side, then rock a messy side bun or top knot the rest of the week. My hair has the least volume the day I wash and dry it actually, which seems to be true of most hair, if it's too clean and shiny it won't hold. That's why they tell you for an updo to come with "day two hair". Not having bangs would help, ask your stylist what they think of letting you grow them out unless your forehead necessitates them. Hair powder helps a lot, and a shine serum. Loose curls are nice and easy to pull off after a day or two.

I wash my hair 2x a week.

If my bangs get greasy or too wavy, I put my hair up in a ponytail and wash (just) the bangs !

I use a honey mask for hair 1x a month. It keeps my hair silky looking.
I have always had hair on the dry side.

My hair is always dry-looking the day I wash it. So, I do not wash it in he AM. I wash it at night an let it completely air dry before I go to sleep.

I eat tons of raw veggies and wild salmon 2x a week--- and eat very little sugar or sugary foods---and no soda.

I wash my hair each time I shower. I don't care what someone else says, it's my hair and I can wash it when it needs it. I have very dry hair so over-washing is not good. But if I need my hair washed I need my hair washed.

I wash my hair every single day.
It's long and thin.
The only way to get some volume is by washing.

I can't mention any names, but I work with a woman who goes and gets her hair "done" once per week. It looks gorgeous the first day. The second day, you can tell she has barely ran a brush through it and you can tell she's slept on it. The third day, it's downright embarrassing. She brushes the front and the back looks like she's spun around on it for a week. By the end of the week, well, we won't go there.

Maybe try a clarifying shampoo. Especially if you have oily hair. It might balance it out.
I just know that I can't go a day without washing my hair.
Often, I wash it at night and twist it so I can twig it up the next day with cute clips. But I wash it the next night.
I don't even have oily hair. It's just so thin that I need it to be light and fresh and clean.

Best wishes.

I have very coarse, dry hair, so I wash it once every 5 to 7 days. I get tons of compliments on it, and my hair stylist says it's extremely healthy. I can't imagine washing it more often than that, but I know it varies by person. My husband has oilier hair, and has to wash his daily.

I wash every other day. Used to be I had to wash every day otherwise I'd have greasy hair on day 2 - but my hormones must be changing b/c now I'm good for 2 days. I'm glad for this b/c I have thick, wavy hair that tends to frizz, so I have to straigten it for it to look decent. It's a lot of work in the morning.

I use a shower cap on the days I don't wash and touch it up with a straightener. You can get a shower cap at Wal-Mart for $5 for a pack of 2.

I used to wash it every other day before I got high-lights. Now I wash it about every 2 days. If I go 3 my hair just feels dirty and even though it doesn't look bad, I hate that unwashed hair smell.
I have horribly thick hair that now takes forever to comb through thanks to my bright idea of getting blonde high-lights all over, so it's a pain washing it then brushing out the tangles. And I do use a good conditioner and leave-in moisturizing serum but those help minimally.
I find my hair is poofy and dry the day I wash it, then it looks best the next day when it's had time to calm down. When I don't wash I used to use a shower cap but the elastic always stretches out or tears so now I use a plastic grocery bag around my head and tie it really tight in a knot so no water will leak through. I actually find it works better than a shower cap.
I use a clarifying shampoo and then a moisturizing conditioner. I do scrub really good with the shampoo as to wash all the grime and grease away so I can maximize my time without having to wash my hair, then use a moisturizing leave-in cream or serum to avoid it being too dry.
I also use a thermal heat protectant spray before blow drying. Blow drying is a must now after the high-lights also because air-drying will just cause tangles again.
Note to self: high-lights on super thick hair is probably not such a good idea in the future. Lol

Everyone is different, so we can't go by the same "rule". I was born with very oily skin. i have to shower and wash my hair everyday, there's no wiggle room for that. I actually have yet to know a friend or family member with as oily skin as I have. I believe those with "normal" hair, every other day is good. Those with dry hair, I've heard of people shampooing every week, but conditioning the hair often...

Oh, and the MAIN reason I take showers is because my hair feels oily. So, I primarily take my shower to wash my hair... (of course I wash my whole body, but it is my hair that feels dirtiest)

I also use shampoos with no sulfates, parabens, or other carcinogens. It doesn't give you that squeaky-clean hair feeling like the other shampoos do, but it does the job, and certainly does not dry my hair out...

I also have curly/wavy hair, so I can go without heat-styling, but I'd say about once a week I decide to blow dry it straight.

For a long time, I washed it every day.
Now, I'd say every other day and sometimes every two days is my norm. Depends.
Probably the best answer for you is to wash it when it needs it, right?

My hair is very wavy but not at all oily. I can dampen my hair with wet fingers then "revive" my style with a blow dryer/round brush.

Also, for in a pinch, try the Tresemmé foam shampoo. Works very nicely!

I only use shampoo in the shower. I use Aveeno Leave In Conditioner--but then a again--my hair is not oily at all.

I've heard to shampoo the scalp mainly--not the hair itself.

I don't use a shower cap in the shower on the days I skip shampooing, but they're available at any drug store. (Look near the brushes, etc.)

People have different KINDS of hair.

Yes, some people have super dry hair and are couch potatoes that never get sweaty and can wash their hair once In a ble moon.

Other people have oily hair, or are active and sweat, and need to wash their hair every day.

I was my hair every day when it's curly or I'm active or my hair is short. I wash my hair every other to every 3rd day if I've blown it out straight AND have been a slug.

The best way to keep hair healthy is to do the following: 1)Use hair products that are water soluble (no silicones). That way you can wash the product away daily with just water - no shampoo necessary. 2) Wash hair daily with just water - taking a bit of time & massaging the scalp (don't use fingernails - just the pads of your fingers). 3) Use a good conditioner daily. If that is not enough, use a leave-in as well. 4)When you do shampoo (1-2 x per week) use a sulfate free shampoo. These shampoos do not have the harsh, drying chemicals that damage hair the most.

Warning: When you first start this routine, it may feel like your hair is a bit greasy. It will improve. When your scalp is used to being dried out daily by shampoos, it actually makes more oil to compensate. As your scalp adjusts to your new routine, it will produce less and less oil. I can now go a whole week without shampoo of any kind and my hair does not become greasy. I will wash my hair daily or every other day with just water and conditioner and it stays clean & healthy. Since I've been doing this, the texture of my dry hair has completely changed - much less brittle & much softer.

I wash my hair every other day, If I dont put alot of product in it, or do anything to rough, I may get away with 3 days, but only if im in a rush. But yea, but the 3rd day, it looks bad.. But my kids hair, I wash theirs once a week as long as they dont have braids, then I dont wash it until I take the braids down, wich could be anywhere from 2-3 weeks. But they are mixed, and have totally different hair then me.
BTW, i hate to wash my hair because I have itchy dry scalp, so the same day I wash, im all itchy

People are different and it varies on your age, too. When I was a lot younger I washed it a couple of times a week, but now I wash it daily. I don't use conditioner daily. Sometimes I'll let it go for a day (like when we're camping) but it bothers me to feel greasy so no more than that if I can at all avoid it. I also don't do a lot to it - let it air dry, don't brush it 50000 times, don't use a curling iron much, etc. Just wash and dry.

I used to wash my hair every morning. I have been told a million times I shouldn't wash it daily. I finally started washing it every other day and the hair seems to have adjusted. It used to get oily the next day, but it doesn't anymore. I cannot go two days because I can smell it and that is gross!

I have noticed on the days I wash my hair, I get a lot of compliments on my cut. On day two, I was told the other day, "That turned out okay" and today's comment was, "Ya I like it like that, it's not perfect". Hehe.

I used to wash my hair daily. In the last year, my hair has not only gotten longer (mid-back), but has also gotten dryer, so now I wash it every two to three days. My bangs still get oily, though, so I wash them daily. I use a good shampoo, a conditioner that I leave on for three minutes before I rinse it out, and a detangler. I had to go for a week without washing my hair post-surgery a couple of weeks ago and it made me insane. So far, and I am nearly 60, my hair is in great shape.

Moral of story? Disregard those hair nazis who tell you that you should only wash your hair once per week. Wash your hair as often as you need to do so.

I wash my hair every other day. My mom washes her hair once a week! And her hair never looks dirty. Mine always looks oily. Well, I went to a new hair dresser and she said it was the shampoo I was using. I use Pantene Pro V and she said it was like I was washing my hair with soap. She suggested Infussion or Aussie if I was going to buy from the store. She said they were the only ones that did not put buildup in hair. She also said, to get buildup out to take baking soda and water 1:1 and make a past and use it like shampoo. I have not gone to the store yet to buy the new shampoo, but plan to soon.
