How Often Do You Do Laundry?

I have a husband and two boys, 2 and 4, and I have to do a load of laundry every day...otherwise it would pile up all week and I'd be spending an entire day doing it. My kids have plenty of clothes but they spill food on them at meal times and just get dirty from playing outside. I try to have them wear play clothes 2 days in a row often. It just seems like it never ends. Is this the norm, how often do you do laundry...and if only once a week, how is that possible? I can't let clothing that has food on it sit in a laundry basket with out risking mold growing during the hot and humid summer...yuck! I'd love some tips on how to make this easier.

What can I do next?

Every damn day... :-/

Bright side. - Just 1 load a day. :)

But I also use cloth diapers, and wash a load of those every other day.

My goal in life is an empty hamper. And I actually achieve that. Everyday. For about 5 minutes.

(5 peeps, including 3 teenagers, and two dogs)

If you get any good answers, let me know! I have always wondered the same thing. I have just one little one...I used to do laundry 2-3 times a week, but by the weekend I was still spending all day doing it...so now my new motto is "A load a day, keeps the laundry away!" I guess it's just something we have to deal with. =(

Every day is the easiest way, really. Just build it into your morning and afternoon routines. I used to "re-boot" the laundry in the morning wherever it had left off the day before - be it a new load going in, something going into the dryer (or re-starting the dryer - ours took 2-3 cycles per load), or something coming out of the dryer to be folded and put away.or all three. And I'd re-boot again at the end of the day when I got home from work.

Now that we can't do laundry at home due to septic system issues, we go to the laundromat once a week. It takes $20 - $30, 4 giant washers, 6 dryers and three hours to wash, dry and fold. Giant waste of time. I'd much rather do 10 minutes in the morning and another 10 at night and not spend hours and hours doing it all at once.

Laundry is like cooking or doing dishes or tidying up the bathroom. The chore is never "done" it's just a process that you do every day as part of your routine.

I do a load everyday. I realized even though there are only 3 of us, we also use cloth napkins and I have specific blankets in the area the dogs lay on when they are in. I wash those once a week too. Flylady recommends doing a load everyday so it doesn't pile up. Sorry, don't know if I can shed light on it to make it any easier, it's a pain but atleast we have machines, not like the ones our great grandparents had or none as some people in some countries do. Still Ugh!

Pretty much every day :(
I can't stand to have it pile up either, and the last thing I want is to be chained to the laundry room all day.
I am a stickler about people hanging up their towels to dry, and not getting into bed dirty/sweaty, so that helps keep the linen & towel washing down somewhat. But even with my two teens doing their own wash now, I still have a lot. It's just a fact of (a clean) life I guess!

Its typical for me to do two loads 5 x week. I'm at about 10 loads a week so sometimes i do two big laundry days and sometimes I spread it out. But one thing is for sure, I hate folding heaps of laundry which is why I like to incorporate a load here and a load there so I'm not folding ALL day. I do sheets and towels on Monday and kid's clothes on Wed or Thur. Everything else I play by ear.

I agree that letting dirty clothes sit all week makes your house stinky. I do mine as soon as I have enough for a load. Usually every few days. I hate saving it up and having to do laundry for an entire day, that is just a huge waste of time to me.

I have two boys (almost 10 and almost 7) and a baby girl, 19 months. I do laundry almost every single solitary day. My husband and two boys play soccer 3 times a week, the baby spills on herself daily (almost every meal!) and we are always playing outside.
Now, I am a great multi-tasker, so it's really not too too bad. But, I suck at folding a putting away. I usually have about 3-4 loads on the floor in front of the dryer and then I say, "Everyone get their baskets!" and I divide it into the right kids basket and they are in charge of putting it away.
I really loathe doing laundry.

I do a load or two every day.

My husband and I work in an area that gets us sweaty so our work clothes have to be washed often or they stink!

My daughter does cheerleading and gymnastics so her leotards and clothes have to be washed often as well.

I'm pretty sure we wouldn't run out of clothes if I did laundry less often, but we'd have to walk around with clothespins on our noses :)

The trick is to get into a routine. I throw a load in the washer first thing in the morning so it can wash while we're getting ready. Then I can put it in the dryer while we're doing homeschool. By lunchtime I can fold the clothes and we put them away on our break. I rarely even "think" about it, it's just part of our day.

I've always done my laundry 1x/week and our clothes have never grown mold. That includes when my oldest had gastric reflux and would spit up massive amounts. Of course, I'd pretreat her clothes with shout then, but i still didn't do laundry more than 1x/week. (And we live in TX, so hot/humid is our story). I do not have time to do laundry more often than that.

We have 6 in our family. I do the general laundry once, sometimes twice a week. In one week, there are a total of 4 loads: 2 colors, 1 whites, 1 delicate. My husband washes his own work clothes (1 load) separately once a week. Beds and towels I do on the first of the month (sorry if some think that is gross, but that's all I have time for) and that's an additional 5-6 loads.

I guess it essentially works out to a load a day. But since I tend to bunch it together, it feels like a lot less. I'm a good multitasker, so doing laundry doesn't prohibit me from doing other things - it's just something that's occurring on the side.

When there were 6 kids and 3 adults in my home I managed to do 2 loads a day everyday except for weekends.

I now have a family of 5, 2 adults, 18 year old, 17 year old and 16 year old. They are responsible for their own laundry. We have to do to the laundry mat which is why I choose to only do hubby and my laundry once every other week which works for us. I'll be doing laundry this weekend.

UPDATED
When kids are little and spills are the norm, I would wash their stained things out by hand and hang them up on the line. If I can't get to the stain promptly I make certain to put something on that stain so it can't set in. Also when buying their clothes I try to keep the color tones in the same family so they can join the wash together and I don't have to be concerned about colors bleeding or ruining the lights or whites with the darks and brights.

The sheets and towels get done together at the same time unless they have an accident which means I get to rinse out or wash out the damaged sheets and hang them up in preparation for washing if I don't wash them on the spot by hand.

We have 3 in our family and I do at least 1 load a day.

I do a lot of towels, we don't re-use. I also use old towels for things around the house and wash them often.

As for our clothing, about 2-4 cold water delicate washes a week, 2 regular light and regular dark clothes a week. Linens, etc weekly

I'm responding to " can't let clothing sit in a laundry basket witout risking mold" part . Yes, indeed. I live in humid Massachusetts and I agree. So I have always done at least one wash almost every day. But I also have a spot with a few hooks in my laundry area, where I let stain-treated items and wet washcloths dry until their wash load.

So, for me, it's just my routine. One wash in and done before I leave for the day, same wash in the dryer as soon as I get home. And if I'm really lucky (which I often am), my hubbie will toss it in the dryer for me!

what you do sounds right to me. when my kids were at home that is exactly what i did. I put a load in almost every morning as soon as I got up. Sheets and towels once a week. For clothes I only dry most things for 5 minutes and then hang them up to dry completely.... so I am done with the laundry pretty early in the morning.

I often left clothes of needing to be folded out where I would walk past it. I'd stop and fold just a few things each time I passed by and usually got done easily that way.

We are a family of 4 and I do laundry about every 3-4 days. Sometimes I do tend to let it pile up. Laundry is not easy here. We are 4 floors in our home with the master bedroom on the very top. Laundry is in the basement. It is hard to be going up and down the stairs carrying a big basket of clothes, lol!

We try for once a week. Yes it takes all day if not 2 days. Definitely 2 days if I wash the bedding, which is every other week.

My 2 kids change clothes each day.
For clothes with food or stains they are rinsed, treated, and placed in the washer. If we end up with a full washer mid week, we run it.

I haven't actually kept track but I would guess I do regular laundry about 3 times a week and then I do sheets, blankets and towels every weekend (more often if I happen to have a bunch of towels because those will get stinky). I could do it once a week but then I would spend the majority of the day on that one task.

J.S.

answers from Hartford on

We do them "as needed." I used to run a load or two daily of everyone's clothes, plus towels every couple of days and linens once a week. As the girls have gotten older they don't get as dirty as often and have a larger store of underwear. ;-)

However, we have a HUGE clothes washer and dryer so the washer does two loads worth and is more economical. Less water, less detergent, less energy, more efficient. It's on its way out, and so is the dryer, so we're hoping to get something really really efficient as soon as my husband is back to work.

When we were a family of six I did one or two loads a day 5 days a week. When it came to bedding and such I did it all in one or two days every couple/few weeks. Now that there are two of us I do it three or four times a week.

I found it easier to do it every day than to let it mount up. It's not that big a deal.

Once a week. Myself, wife, 12yr old boy and 6 yr old girl.
Yes it does pile up all week. I have 4-5 loads at the end of the week. Yes, it takes a few hours, but I do it on Sunday night or Monday morning.
There is no reason to do laundry every day unless everyone in the house only has 1 pair of underwear, lol.
And you CAN let clothes sit in the laundry with food on it, rinse, spray some cleaner on it and toss in the basket......that simple.

We put our clothes by the washer. We run loads as needed, pretty much anytime it's needed. I have an HE machine that autosenses the load level so I just throw in a bunch of the same color, however many or few we have, and let it run. We usually do someone's laundry every day. I cannot let DH's workout gear sit too long so it's washed out of necessity. DH, the older kids and I all pitch in (when the kids are home).

Husband's week of work shirts, kid's school uniforms, beach towels and stuff? That is on Saturdays.

All bedding in the house and bath rugs? Mondays. (We do sheets every Monday, we do comforters only the first Monday of each month---we're not laying around, naked or muddy, on top of our beds. Beds are to sleep in, and we shower before bed. Mondays are sufficient for us.

Whatever is starting to pile up in our THREE mesh laundry hampers (mesh so it doesn't sour)? Wednesdays.
