My baby is on an antibiotic and has already had 4 diarrhea diapers and its only 10:30 in the morning. Has anyone had experience with using acidophilus powder or probiotics to decrease the diarrhea? does it matter what brand I use? How much should I give an 11 month old? Thanks!

What can I do next?

I don't know about the acidophilus, but my kids have had diarrhea reactions to certain antibiotics. All I did was call my pediatrician, they called in a new prescription for a different type of antibiotic (there are usually several kinds that can work from what I understand) and then my children were fine with the new type. My doctor then knew next time that they did not do well with that certain type.

I use Jarro-Dophilus for my baby's, any kind you use, it's best to use the kind you have to refrigerate to preserve the natural live cultures, they're better than the powder forms. Go to your local health/Whole foods store & ask them about your options, their always great help!

I would call your doctor and ask for a recommendation. Mine actually had samples, and one was the powder. I always start when I start antibiotics (wish I knew that sooner!). And yes, it does help, if not stopping the diarrhea itself, it does help with the sores that my son always gets on his bum with antibiotics.

It works great. I would recommend Metagenics Ultra Flora. 1/4tsp dosage. We recommend it to our patients all the time.

HI SS,

Yes it works! I don't know how old your baby is but I have recommended Florify for youngsters 6months and older. It is in a capsule but it can be opened and used in a bottle. It is a probiotic and prebiotic. You can also go to the Health Store and tell them about the stupid doctor and the antibiotic and they will know what to sell you. Make sure you go to a store that sells pharmaceutical grade supplements and health items. They not only have better quality things but they are usually well educated in knowing, or knowing where to find, the right stuff.

Vitamin Shoppe is fine, Vitamin World is not. Never GNC or anyplace like Walmart or Rite-Aid. If you don't know, ask them. If they don't know, go somewhere else :)

If you don't keep your baby on probiotics, always start him on one when giving an antibiotic. Antibiotics are only for bacterial infections and even most of them will go away on their own. Always QUESTION the use of the antibiotic as well. Doctors are rewarded nicely by the pharmaceutical companies for prescribing their drug of choice. That may be why your subbing doctor chose one over the other...

God bless,

M.

My ped always recommends Florastor Kids when my son has diarrhea. Seems to work pretty well and no adverse effects. Not sure about acidophilus though.... Haven't heard about it. Good luck.
