J.K.
Hi D. my son was allergic to cows milk for several months in which we gave him goats milk. It was kinda expensive but as he got older he was able to drink cows milk and hasn't had any problems.
How much milk or milk alternative does a 12 month old need everyday? I am going to be transitioning my son in the next few weeks. He is allergic to cows milk so I'm looking into our options. Thanks for your help
Hi D. my son was allergic to cows milk for several months in which we gave him goats milk. It was kinda expensive but as he got older he was able to drink cows milk and hasn't had any problems.
I was told 16 ounces a day, and since my daughter loved her milk, I used to water it down and still let her have it like 4x per day at that age.
D.,
16 oz per day of milk or a milk apternative, remember that if you use soy or rice milk you need to use a WHOLE fat soy or rice milk so he gets enough cholesterol.
toddlers need about 16 oz/ day, try goat milk, or soy milk as alternatives
At 18 months, my ped said no more than 2 cups, between 1 1/2 sounded good to him.
Milk can be a good source of calcium, protein, and fat, but it is not a requirement in the diet. When my first baby didn't take to cow's milk, my pediatrician wasn't concerned (my son has since decided he likes it just fine), though he did get dairy nutrition through yogurt and cheese.
I think the challenge when not feeding whole cow's milk would be to get the fat and calcium from whatever other sources.
My son just turned 1 and our pediatrician said about 2 cups/16 oz a day of whole cow's milk. Sounds like your son is allergic to cow's milk, so I'd check to see how much of whatever alternative you are providing you will need. It might be different depending upon the beverage. One interesting point the pediatrician mentioned when I inquired about goat's milk is that it doesn't have any or enough folic acid in it. I thought that was note worthy. Best of luck to you!
We were told 12 oz of milk or yogurt a day. She said it is still true for our daughter at 18 months.
Congrats!!!
