How Much Is Enough Sleep for a One Year Old?

I'm not sure if this is the right category, but recently it dawned on me that perhaps my one year old was getting too much sleep. She DID NOT sleep normally as an infant (read: not at all, not even as a newborn)so most of my posts prior have been about getting her to sleep. Now she sleeps beautifully (provided that I am not sharing a bed with her), but I am wondering now if it too much. She goes to bed at 7 and wakes up at 7. She has two naps, one in the morning 1-1.5 hours and another in the afternoon 1-2 hours. Between feedings and napping, when does she get to play and move about? Any thoughts?

My son sounds identical to your daughter. Didn't sleep at all as an infant. Turned a yr old and has slept like a baby since.

At 19 months old he still sleeps roughly 8-8 and has a 3 hr sometimes 3.5 hr nap during the day. I too was worried if he was sleeping too much. Especially these past few weeks where he was sleepin' in until 9-10am and still going down for his 3 hr afternoon nap. But he snapped out of it & is back to normal. So don't worry about it too much. She just might need the zzzz's.

BTW right about 16/17 mths my son went through a month where he refused to take a nap & was up at 6:30am. I was so scared it was all over so like all the other moms said enjoy it while you can...Lucky for me I'm still enjoying it, guess it was just a phase:)

Sounds pretty much how my kids were at that age. I remember feeling like there was never a good time for us to go out and do something. Enjoy it now...because it will change, probably within the next 6 months. She will probably drop her morning nap and the afternoon nap will become longer. Then you will have a block of time in the morning to do stuff. Playtime and moving around time for a 1 year old doesn't have to be long....15 minutes here and there is all they need.

Hi Lilia,
That sounds about right. Children need alot more sleep than many parents think. A great book for age appropriate sleep needs and schedules is Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child by Dr. Marc Weissbluth. He is a expert in this area. My daughter is 4 and still sleeps 11-13 hours each night. I used his book as my sleep "bible" after she was born. Keep up the good work! Believe me, you will miss the naps when they go!
Sincerely,
L.

My son was identical in sleep times and habits. I cut bottles at 1yr because he was such a good eater so that gave us more time between breakfast and the start of the morning nap and the end of the morning nap and lunch etc. for play/short outings. Snacks I offered on the go if necc. Then two months later he started napping for 45 min. only twice a day and I knew it was time to consolidate to one nap. Now we have so much time it's hard to fill! Enjoy it while you can.

Enjoy it while it lasts! My daughter started doing that at 11 months, once she turned 18 months it all stopped. We still (at 2 years old) are battling a full night sleep. Your daughter will be dropping one of her naps soon too. Enjoy the rest, you deserve it!
