I had my son 6 months ago and had my first period last month. I expected it to be heavy as it was the first after giving birth. Well now I am in the middle of my second one and I am bleeding worse than last time! I am buckled over with cramps! This has been going on since Thursday Nov. 30th. Is it normal to go through a "Super Plus" tampon every hour? I have NEVER had heavy periods or cramps before. Any info would help! Thanks!

What can I do next?

M.,

That doesn't sound normal at all. If it were me, I'd get in to see my OB/Gyn. The only times I've bled like that were for miscarriages. It sounds like your hormones are definitely out of whack and your doctor should know about it.

It definitely doesn't sound like normal menstruation. Sounds more like you're miscarrying. Is this possible for you? I'd go see a doctor and possibly get checked for a missed pregnancy.

I have been told that if you are having to change your pad or tampon about every hr or more you need to go to the er as it may be a miscariage.

Hi M.,

First of all I'm not a Doctor but I DO NOT think that is normal. I have 3 children and after my second I had an abnormal PAP, CIN II...III is cancer. My Doctor tried a few things like a shot incase it was a virus and finally he froze my cervex. My next PAP was fine. I became pregnant a little more than 2 yrs. later and lost that one. Two months after that I became pregnant again (waiting the proper time per Doctors orders) and carried her fine for the most part. During my last pregnancy my Doctor, my mother & I decided that I would have a Hysterectomy due to personal and a very bad family history. I was finished having kids...even though I was only 27.

Doc knew he would have to convince the insurance company to cover it...well after I had my baby he had little convincing to do. I bled heavily and painfully for more than a month. I had the Hysterectomy which wasn't near as painful as the bleeding and it has been absolutely awesome. I still have my ovaries so I do not have to take hormones or any medication...and it is great not having a period. I know you're younger than I was but if you're finished having kids it's a thought. It sure helped me! Good luck!

When I got my period back after my son, it was super heavy like that for the first few times and really really bad cramps, I felt like I was bleeding to death or something, but after a couple months it went back to normal (well more normal than it was) Also my period seemed to be lighter when I started taking my BC pills again, don't know if that is an option for you. But I think if you are really worried, you should at least call the advice nurse at your doctor's office.

My sister had endometriosis and cysts. For those cases a lot of the time the bleeding is heavier and cramps much worse. Check with doctor. Best bet.

My periods after having my son are very heavy and come every two weeks. I am told that can be from the c-section I had though. If I were you I would call your ob to check though. If it has been going on since Thursday I would think it should be getting better by now. It is nothing to mess around with. Your health is so important. Good luck and I hope everything is ok

Hi M.,
I experienced the same things after my pregnancies.
I would bleed so much that I had to change my clothes all the time. I found that it started to change after I started getting more active again. I would just check with my dr. if it continues on for a while. You start to find that you can't function for a whole week with such a crazy period. I hope it starts to get better for you, and you find some relief!

If you EVER go through a "Super Plus" in an hour for more than a couple hours, you should call your Doctor or Nurse! My experience has been that everyone's periods are different after having a baby, it's really hard to judge what's normal. Call your doctor or nurse & they can let you know if it's anything to be worried about. Just to stay on the safe side.

That can be common for women who breast feed. If you are interested I hear that the IUD can make your periods slower. But any time you are concerned it doesn't hurt to call your OB and talk to a nurse.
