How Many Weeks Were You Pregnant When Your Doctor Talked to You About La Maz...

sorry, I don't know the correct spelling of La Maz....And talk to you about what to look for in Contractions/Braxton Hicks contractions, and if you're getting a C-Section, if they are going to use an Epidural, how your doctor likes to do things during the procedure, if they're going to use the same incision etc....

Basically getting you ready for your due date, whether it comes early, or as scheduled....

I'm 35 wks and I have yet to learn about any of this. I have a scheduled C-Section at the end of this month, but what if my baby comes early? This is my second baby, but I had my first five years ago, and I am no expert on what to expect, nor do I recall a lot of this stuff.

Just wondering when you all were informed of this. Thanks so much!

What can I do next?

With my first they talked to me about all of that during my second trimester, but really only because I asked.

With my second, who was a scheduled c-section, we talked about the due date/c-section date around week 30. Once again because I asked. It was at this time that I talked about my previous c-section experience, what made me nervous, my epidural, etc. I asked for an anti-anxiety pill for during my c-section at this same appointment, and asked each time I went, just to make sure I would not have another anxiety attack on the operating table. No mention of what to do if I went into labor early, etc. as I already knew that I would just call the office and I would go in for my c-section.

Not sure if that helped, but I do know that you often have to be your own advocate. Doctors are so busy and they don't always remember what they already told their patients, so you have to be diligent and write down any questions or concerns you have each and every time you go to the doctor. Congratulations on your pregnancy! I hope everything goes well with your delivery.

You need to prompt your doctor. Write a list of questions and go have a visit. My doctor wasnt telling me anything. I knew most of what I knew from my sisters child births. I did some research and came up with a delivery plan and told my doctor what I wanted and she let me know if anything would change or couldnt happen. Every nurse I had got the birth plan and everyone that was in the room with me I talked to about my plan and gave them a copy.

I know you are having a csection. However you can still get your doctor to help you come up with some type of a plan so you feel comfortable and at ease with everything that happens or could happen. Even talk about after effects of the csection.

I'm 33 weeks now, and in this pregnancy my doctor probably started talking about Lamaze and labor and preparation last month. I don't like to count on doctors to bring any of that to your attention because they usually don't or they do when it's too late. Pretty much I learned from my first pregnancy to create my own birth plan, put down how I want things done and tell the doctor this is what I want, and then ask for her suggestions and input. I do all of my own research, read lots of books and online articles. Going to Lamaze or any other classes help also, I don't have time like that so we do everything at home. Definitely put something on paper and talk to your doctor asap just in case someone wants to come out early!! Good luck with the new baby!!!

This is what I know from my Dr - I'm 38 weeks and also had a C-Section the first time. If you already have a C-Section planned - you should prob. not even worry about Lamase classes - as if you go into labor - they will just do the C-Section as an emergency. They use a local anethetic I believe - or is a local epidural... I can't remember but it only numbs your lower half. I believe that they will try to use the same incision, alhtough I think it depends on how much scarring it has. But I would think that it would be close if not the same. My Dr did not really talk about Braxton Hicks - mainly I think becuae I didn't bring it up... But if you are concerned about any of these - talk to your dr the next time you are there. Don't wait for him/her to bring it up - you are the one paying them - so you bring it up. It is there responsibility to make you feel at ease.

Hi G.,

I had a vaginal delivery, but I didn't find out about any of that stuff until probably the 3rd trimester...and even then, it was because I asked. I had a lot of questions about natural childbirth, epidurals, what to expect, etc. I would make a list of your questions (that's what I did) and ask your Dr at your next appt. When my Dr came in I just flat out said at the beginning of the appt that I came with a list of questions. I'm not really sure why Dr's don't seem to concerned with discussing that stuff. I definitely wouldn't wait for your Dr to initiate that conversation though. Good luck!

I had a scheduled C-section with my first, and my water broke 3 weeks early. I went to the hospital, and since it was already planned, they went with the C-section, no questions asked. Definetley take a list of any questions you may have to your next appointment, and get them answered!

G.,

I am a licensed midwife and I begin discussing these topics with my clients at their very first prenatal visit. We continue to discuss them at every visit between then and the birth of the baby.

If you aren't already, I would strongly recommend getting into a good prenatal education class. There's a really good one provided by the doula/student midwife (who is also the head of a c-section support group) Sally Stevens at www.blessedexpectations.com .

Blessings to you and your family for the upcoming birth of your baby!
