How Long Did It Take to Get Your Period Back?

I BF my first daughter until she was 1, started weaning around 10 1/2 months and on her first birthday I got my period. I was completely done 2 weeks after that. Now with my second daughter I started weaning her once she turned 1 and I have been completely done BF her for a month now and still have not gotten my period. I guess I'm just wondering if this is normal or could I be pregnant? We use condoms right now but we did have unprotected sex twice back in January so I'm just a little worried. I guess I would just feel better to hear that it does take some woman a while their period back. Thanks

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for all of your comments. I decided to take a test and it was negative. Which is good. I'm not ready to have another one just yet. So I guess my body just hasn't gotten all the way back to normal yet. But I'm glad to hear that this is normal and now I'm so worried about it. Thanks again.

With my first and only son, I started weaning in May, was done completely with BF by July. Didn't get my period until FebruaryI think it was. (5 months!) So hormones can be funny. If you're worried, take a test. A few bucks to help you sleep better at night.

Breastfeeding doesn't protect against pregnancy that well after the first few months. (I didn't trust it to help prevent pregnancy at all since we apparently were ultra fertile together...) I got pregnant with my second within about 2 weeks of stopping birth control and while I was still breastfeeding. He was 9 months old. I hadn't had a period. My milk dried up over the next month even though we weren't ready to wean. With my second one, I got my first back period when she was about 11 months and i'm still breastfeeding. (Too bad - I liked not having a period for just over 3 years....).

Take a pregnancy test to make sure; otherwise enjoy not having it!

Did you take a pregnancy test? I got my period before I was done breastfeeding around 10 months.

Oooh - Both your scenarios sound wonderful. I got my period while still breastfeeding but I think plenty of women's period is very delayed; especially by long term BFing.

On the other hand... If you want a 3rd, you are on the right track. You ovulate before you get your period. So the fact that you haven't had a period yet post-BF doesn't mean you haven't ovulated.

This is something that is not the same for one child as it is the next. You may wait until 6 wks. before getting a period, not to worry. You can't go by what happened with the first one. Every child is different just as every pregnancy and period. Rest easy.

Everyone is different and I don't think you can compare yourself to others! For instance after each of my 3 children I got my period while breastfeeding at exactly 28 days postpartum :( No break for me!)
Anyway, I would take a pregnancy test if you think you may have conceived 6 weeks ago so that you can start taking vitamins etc...
Hope everything turns out good for you and your family!

I didn't get mine until i went back on birthcontrol (so not even a real period... just the one birth control made happen) when DS was around 10 or 11 months old.

I'd probably take a pregnancy test, if it were me. If you think you may have conceived in January, it's been plenty of time for a test to show up positive.

Hope this helps,
T.

Your body is all messed up after a baby and nursing. All three of my kids were different. The first one I got my period about 2 months after I quit nursing. The second one it was 6 months after and the third one I got my period 4 months after she was born and still nursed her until 1 (all three went until 1 with nursing). So I chalk it up to it took 9 months plus nursing to mess up your hormones so it takes a while for everything to get back on track. I wouldn't worry about it.

Good luck!

It certainly can take several months to get your cycle back to normal-but if you're concerned at all-take a pregnancy test. They don't cost that much-and it could save you from potentially dangerous decisions if you are pregnant-like going out and drinking as if you weren't-or eating foods that you shouldn't-like sushi. If you are-congratulations! If you aren't-yes, be comforted by the fact that it CAN take a while to get your system back to "normal."

Either way-best of luck!

it can be either. it took 2 months to wean my first and i got pregnant during that time. but i got negative pregnancy test results until i was 8 weeks along. it took a little less time to wean my second, and my period returned about 2 months later. i know it's hard, but try not to dwell on it a lot. take a pregnancy test once a week if that's not too expensive for you. you can go ahead and take prenatal vitamins just in case. and take lots of deep breaths! :)
