i have a nephew that is adhd that i babysit and i totally understand what u r goin through. he takes more time away from spending time with the other kids. i dont know if u already know this but there is certain foods and drinks that make adhd kids even more high strung. anything with the red food dye like red popcicles, red koolaid, etc makes them more hyper. same with foods that have alot of fat content. if he is eating this kind of stuff, try cutting it out and u will see a MAJOR improvement. if he is in school, see if he will color u a picture of what his favorite thing was about the day and that will buy u a little time for the other kids. set up his own account on the computer and put some educational games on there to work his knowledge. its amazing what they can do at this age! i hope this helped a little.

I have an adopted sister who has adhd and my parents were having the same problem. The meds were helping at school, but not at home because they had worn off. They talked to the doctor and I beleive just adjusted the dosage and it has made a large improvement at home.

Hello! I am a mom of 3 and a teacher. This year, I am teaching Kindergarten...so I deal with 5 and 6 year olds. I am not an advocate for medication, but I have seen situations where it really does make a difference. Like others said, take a look at other medications. Most students that I have had take pills 2 times a day.

I would also look at diet. They say that there are real improvements seen when a child with ADHD's diet is changed or improved. Also, I would look at getting him involved in an activity that can be calming or help teach discipline such as karate or yoga. I have found with those kids....they need ways to get out their energy, but they also need to have ways to learn to relax.

Good luck! and HUGS
K.

I completely understand not wanting to give your child any more medications. I would recommend having the type of medication he is on for his adhd looked at. There may be another medication which would work better for both of you and not increase the number of times a day you would have to give it to him nor make him a zombie from being over medicated.

It is very difficult having a child who takes up most of your day, keeping you from spending time with your other children. An option would be to take some special time out of the day when your 6 yr old isn't at home or when your husband or someone else can take care of your 6 yr olds needs to spend with your other two children. You could also make a special time on weekends or husbands days off to spend individually with your other children this way they feel you have quality alone time with them.

If you'd prefer something less pharmeceutical, there is an herbal supplement I found that is specifically for ADHD, to help bring the hyperactivity down and help the child focus. They have both adult and children's doses. This may be something you can give him that is less jarring than more meds.

Otherwise, there is also a link between brain function, ADHD, and Omega-3 fatty acids. If your son isn't getting enough of them, that could be contributing to his condition. My suggestion would be to get the Smart Balance brand butter substitute and use that instead of butter/margarine for everything. Not only is it healthier, it tastes good and it may help his behavior. Also, a breakfast with a good amount of protein (stay away from sugary things early in the day) will help him focus. Anything like scrambled eggs, toast w/ peanut butter, bacon and eggs, yogurt with flax oil, or a protein shake would be a good breakfast for him.
