Maybe rent a steam cleaner....after the bug is gone! Have you tried baking soda sprinkled on the offensive areas? Cups of white vinegar around the house may help to absorb the odors as well.
Looks like you have a couple of good suggestions below, if none of them work trying a pet enzyme cleaner , like Nature's miracle, might work. If you have any candles that are good at pulling odors away that can work too.
I would think baking soda and vinegar.
Sprinkle baking soda on the carpet, let it sit and walk it in a bit too, then vacuum it up. Then boil a pot of vanilla extract in water (a remedy suggested by the fire department when the house was full of smoke from the fire place burning with a closed flute).
Rosenthals is a very cheap carpet and upholstry cleaner available at the hardware store. It's generally great for vomit. More expensive but will definitely work is Nature's Miracle available at the pet store.
Baking soda and white vinegar. Sprinkle the baking soda on first and let it sit for awhile. Vacuum it up and repeat. You can even let it sit overnight if you want. Then, dab a wet cloth in vinegar and work it into the carpet. Repeat if necessary. This works amazingly well. I, too, had the vomit smell in the carpet and this took care of it. It also took out the beer stain and horrible smell out of my carpet (my brother felt awful about spilling his Christmas Ale!)
Good luck!
Nature's Miracle. Find it at pet stores. Good luck.
Borax, the laundry additive, is great with odors!
