House Alarm System - Cut Phone Line

I've just learned that my house alarm system is connected to my phone line
and that it can be cut before breaking into my home, without notifying
authorities that I am having an alarm event. My in-house alarm will sound.
I just called my alarm company and they can install a device (similar to a cell
phone device) that can send a wireless signal that would alert authorities for
a one time installation fee of $99 plus $8 more a month. Does anyone have
recommendations or experience with this problem. I currently pay $35.95 for an
1,800 square foot house. I opt out of mentioning my alarm company because
my intention is not to discredit them. Thank you for any advice.

Well, with the alarm system in my in-law's house (and this was 10 years ago) and in our last house (within the last few years), if there was an interruption in the phone line, it automatically sent a notification to the company. We had to call them in advance when we were having the line worked on. So, it sounds a bit hinky to me. Mention to your alarm company that you have heard of this feature, and that you are thinking of calling around for some bids and see what they are willing to offer.

Not sure if this is something off with your alarm company, but it would seem to me that an alarm system that would be rendered ineffective if the phone line was cut would be kind of worthless, wouldn't it? Shouldn't that be a basic function of the alarm system, to alert someone if the phone line 'was' cut?

I'd check around other companies, and see what their basic services include and go from there.

I have the same system and have no problem with the idea that my phone lines can be cut because my in-house alarm is extremely loud and will alert me or my husband the moment anything is amiss. At which point we will retrieve our guns and defend our home and children (alerting the authorities at the first possible chance). If you think that the police will ever get there in time to actually defend you or your family from an intruder, you are sorely mistaken. Police response time varies depending on your area, but even the best you can hope for wouldn't be under 10-15 minutes. A LOT can happen in that amount of time and the police would get there just in time to clean up the mess and file a report about it.

If you're concerned about what happens to your home when you're not in it, that might be another story. But a good, LOUD alarm should be enough to scare most daytime burgalers away. At night? It's nobody's responsibility but your own to defend yourself. You simply can't count on emergency response to get there in time and miraculously save the day.

I have noticed that even though my brother and I both got ADT in our respective homes, my provider installed an extremely loud alarm in the upstairs air conditioning return while my brother's just has a keypad that beeps. So instead of paying out the money for the wireless signal, make a call to your alarm company and insist that they make the alarm ITSELF an actual deterrent...which is the way it should be.

If I am not mistaken, mine would notify of an issue if they lost signal...never happened but I believe that is correct. I currently pay $24.95 per month.

Back when we had our system with landlands - the company did install a device that automatically notified them if the signal was lost. They'd try to call us and if they couldn't reach us, would send the police. I do think they had to call the phone company first to see if there was a problem reported in our area.....we paid only for the device to be installed - never paid anything extra a month.

I would switch to Sloan Security. See if they are in your area. I believe they can do the cell phone option too but they are $125 a YEAR! I love them and they work with the equipment you have. They also are more sensitive than my former alarm monitoring company. We get called if the alarm is showing that something is wrong (low battery for instance) before the battery dies in the middle of the night.

Give them a call!

just wanted to pass on my thoughts. We purchased the APX alarm system about 5 months ago, it is wireless no phone line necessary and I pay about $54 a month. I am very very pleased with it and feel secure knowing that i don't have to worry about a phone line being cut for easy access. It even has a backup system for when the electricity goes out. We accidently set it off on night we forgot to turn it off before we walked into the house and let me tell you that sound would wake up and notify the whole town if possible it was LOUD but I am ok with that. I would highly recommend you looking into APX if it's available in your area.
