Hotel Recommendation for Family with Young Kids(age 8,4)From NYC to ATL

I would stay at one of the hotels in Dunwoody (Perimeter). It's not too far from Alpharetta in one direction or Buckhead and downtown in the other direction. There are several great places to eat and Perimeter Mall. It's also just a few miles from GA 400 for quick access. There is an Embassy Suites there that would probably have spacious rooms, breakfast, etc. Good Luck!

Alpharetta is just a trip up GA 400 from the city. I would say, stay in Alpharetta and take 400 to the city for day trips. I'm sending you a link that gives all sorts of information about everything from lodging to local events. Check to column on the left as well as the tabs on top.

I've read the responses you've already received and agree with staying in Alpharetta and taking trips down GA400 (the freeway) into downtown to see the sites. That way you can easily check out Alpharetta and Cumming to see what the areas are like to live in. Also, there are great parks for your kids to play. I'm from NY (Long Island) and have a 10 yo and 7 yo (my parents live in NYC, we visit them every year).

Great parks to visit:
Wills Park (located West of GA400 off of Old Milton Pkwy)
Webb Bridge Park (located off of Webb Bridge Rd)
Newtown Park (closest to Embassy Suites, located on Old Alabama Rd)

I definitely recommend Embassy Suites, my daughter had a b'day party there because of the indoor pool. They have a good breakfast buffet that is included. They offer free shuttle services within a 3 mile radius of the hotel. The hotel is easy access to GA400 and located across the street from the North Point Mall that has a indoor foam play area (more geared toward the younger kids) for rainy days.

Alpharetta is located just south of Cumming and north of the city of Atlanta. I would highly suggest going to the Aquarium, it's incredible. You need to allow a few hours at the minimum, it's huge!

I live in Alpharetta, close to the Embassy Suites and am a Realtor. We've been living here for 10 years and we wouldn't want to live anywhere else. It's a great area to raise kids. Welcome to the South...Ya'll! I am a native Atlantan and this is a great place to live and raise a family. It is good that you are checking out the Places of Interest. Do you have a preference of a "kind" of hotel? Price range? Likes and Dislikes???

You can stay downtown, but some of the sites are scattered around the city and the hotel may not have shuttles. If you rent a car, you can venture outside the perimeter into some other really pretty areas.

One of the areas you might want to consider is the Dunwoody area around Perimeter Mall. First of all, you are in between downtown and Alpharetta/Cumming. Also, the Marta (rail transportation) is available from that area. You are just a few minutes to downtown to almost any attraction via Marta. I know with the kids you will want to see the Aquarium, World of Coke, Underground Atlanta, etc. There may even be some events at the Phillips Arena or Georgia World Congress Center of interest. There are several hotels in that area from Holiday Inn, Marriott and more.

You can also get to Stone Mountain, which is about a 40 minute drive. You are about 30-35 minutes from Cumming and Lake Lanier. You can get to Marietta within 45 minutes, so it is really a good location. Plus you are near the mall and plenty of places to eat.

There's an Embassy Suites in Alpharetta that does a good job. Not sure about the shuttle, but there is a breakfast buffet, exercise room, and most importantly an indoor pool. On the weekends it's usually crawling with kids because it's a popular place to have birthday parties (see indoor pool). It's very close to a lot of Alpharetta shopping, as well as downtown Alpharetta. About a 15 minutes drive north to Cumming.

I would stay in Alpharetta (sounds like the Embassy Suites is popular!) I wouldn't want to stay in Downtown Atlanta with kids alone at night and Midtown is a little pricey and very upscale. To travel I would take the MARTA train down to Midtown and Downtown to see the sights. The kids would love the Aquarium, the Childrens Museum and the World of Coke.

When I was moving here I got amazing hotels from Hotwire. You pick the area and they will have the stars and the price they offer. I stayed in a three star hotel for $50 per night and it was a high end Marriot and Hilton. Roswell is also nice and near Alpharetta. From what I understand the best county schools is Forsyth. Check crtc scores online to see different schools. GA has great programs for kids. The best ,according to my parents, is the HOPE grant. If you graduate from 4 years of a GA high school and have a ___ GPA then you qualify for the state to pay tuition and books to any public GA college.

That's going to be tough. Unfortunately, there is so much to do in metro Atlanta, but it's all spread out from one end of the metro area to the other. It's probably no different than getting to the different buroughs in NYC. I live in Cumming, about as far south as you can get without being in Alpharetta. You definitely get more house and yard for the money in Forsyth county (Cumming), as well as lower property taxes than you do in Alpharetta. What do your kids like to do? Swim? Concerts? Aquariums? Hiking? Jumping/bouncing houses? Shop? Go to the Park?

Just curious, but why are you relocating?

Hello V. - You don't want to go or stay in downtown Atlanta - it is dangerous and nasty down there. There are plenty of hotels in Alpharetta at the North Point Mall area and Windward Parkway exits 9 and 11. Best of luck
