HI moms. I have been on a weight loss journey since June of 2009. There have been some bumps along the way, but I am at an 80lb loss! Things have been slowing down a bit so I decided to add Hot Yoga to the mix. I am still a big girl....so I talked with the instrustor to see what she thought about me being in the class, but of course she thought it would be "great!" ....they always do when they want your money!
So, has anyone done Hot Yoga? What did you think about it? What were some of the benefits? Is it worth it?
Thanks!
L.

Congrats on the weight loss!

I had a girlfriend talk me into Hot Yoga a few years ago and I tried it. I'm not a big fan of being overly hot because my body doesn't sweat the normal way most people's does. Like another commenter, I lasted about 20 minutes. I laid down the rest of the time. They wouldn't let me leave the room. I will admit, as soon as I was done I went straight in the bathroom and threw up. My body couldn't handle shedding that many toxins through the sweat. I never went back, but every so often I get a craving to do it again. Strange for something that made me sick, but I think if I were to try it again it wouldn't be as bad. At the time I did it I wasn't eating well (or hardly at all). Now I eat healthy and exercise on a somewhat frequent basis.

If your talking Bikram yoga it rocks!! It is nothing like any other... I lost a ton of weight doing it and gained muscle and flex. You really have to like the heat but even if you don't after 2-3 classes you'll be ok-- You may only be able to do 20 mins your first class while laying down the rest-- I don't like the religious side of it being I'm a born again Christian--- I just say my own worship and tune out theirs
At least give it a try

First of all, good for you and congratulations on your great work!!! Now, I LOVE HOT YOGA!!!!!!!! I have dabbled in various yoga practices since I was a little girl with my mom's yoga books. Hot yoga was the first one that really hooked me, it was the first one that I felt a really powerful immediate effect. I felt like I was soaring after a class, and the residual effects were great too, I felt just fantastic throughout the days between classes. Now, I have to tell you that the first 2 or 3 classes, you will not be sure that you can do it, and it feels suffocating and intensely frustrating. You likely may not be able to do the whole class, but will have to rest. But, if you hang in there, do a class every 2 or 3 days, you will be amazed at how your body adjusts. I remember the instructor saying that after practicing for a while, you won't even need to drink water during the class, and I thought, yeah right! But she was right, and I did get to that point. And I got very fit. I don't have time to do it anymore and I really miss it. Someday I will do it again!

I have to say that the instructors make a difference in how you feel. At my favorite studio, they were very supportive and compassionate and that is what worked for me. Also, they talked through the whole class, and the reason is that they are giving you something to focus on.

Best wishes!

Hello L.! Congrats on reaching your goals so far! I love yoga and have been doing it for 8 years now however I personally don't care for hot yoga. You should try one class and see how you like it (it is usually a love it or hate it kind of thing). First of all, it is really hot. You are working and then the room is hot. I just feel like I am outside in Florida in the summer. Also, many follow the Bikram syllabus that is pretty much the same moves in the same sequence. I like a little variety myself. A "power" yoga class might get you the results you are looking for as well...something else to try! Ultimately yoga is about finding what works best for you and it can really compliment all aspects of your exercise routines and your life. You will find that some studios/classes are just purely exercise and others offer a more spiritual aspect (i.e. with chanting and mediatation thrown in). Again, try out different ones not only for what you are doing but for the teacher and the community as well. You will more likely want to come to class if you like the teacher and the people who are sharing the class with you. Good luck!!!!!

I am a big fan or cardio and so was not really into trying hot yoga but needed something new to keep me going. I tried it and didn't really love it the first time around but I began to see the benefits. I am a huge sweater. I am the first to break out in a sweat which is kind of gross but at least I know I am cleaning out my pores. Anyway, I have a friend who use to go who was a big girl and you know what? She could do all the moves, was so graceful and she just loved it. I am a runner and couldn't even stand on one leg without falling down. Size does not matter!!!! Just make sure you listen to your body and slow down or take a break when you need to. Also don't just try the class once before you decide. And really important, it doesn't matter what kind of shape you are in, hot yoga is either your thing or not. If you don't like it, it has nothing to do with your size or how in shape you may be.
Congratualtions on the weight loss and good for you for thinking of new things to do. Good luck and let us know what you think.

First of all, congratulations. You should be very proud of yourself. Second, there is absolutely nothing like hot yoga so waste no time and get into that class!!! Yoga is amazing because it will strenghten, tone and add flexibility to both your body and your mind. I've been doing hot yoga steadily for about 4 1/2 months now and I'm noticing bones and muscle definition that I didn't know was there (I'm getting thinner, but always been on the chubby-side so there is a lot of fat that's been with me forever if you know what I mean) on top of it all, the focus on breath during the class has made me much more relaxed and able to handle all those little life stresses. The heat of our classes is about 90 degrees. You sweat a LOT so bring a towel and water. Also, if you like it and are able to invest a bit of money, get a yogitoes mat. It goes right on top of your regular mat with rubber stops to keep it in place. It absorbs all of the sweat so you won't slip out of poses and can be washed inbetween classes. Good luck, have fun and namaste.

Hi! Congrats on your wonderful efforts and accomplishments! I have done hot yoga a couple of times and think its great for those that like it. First off, have you done yoga in the past? The reason why I ask is because hot yoga has 26 different positions (generally). They are great but as with all positions can be difficult, and being all sweaty makes holding a foot on your thigh a bit tough. You will need to drink a LOT of water before the class. and you should probably start a couple of hours (2-3) prior. You will sweat it all out. That is way I stopped going. The water intake prep was just something I kept forgetting to do. Good luck!!!

CONGRATS! I LOVE LOVE hot yoga. You will see a noticeable difference for sure. You really have to do if for a series of classes in order to see a difference in inches. You will sweat a lot of water and as soon as you drink it will come back but overtime you will see major body changed due to the poses.

By the way does anyone, including you, know of a place in Pleasanton? I haven't been able to go due to children and would love to find a local hot yoga studio. thanks

Hi L.!
Congrats on your 80lb loss, that is really something to be proud of. I have been doing hot yoga in Renton for about a year now and LOVE it. I have done regular yoga in the past but never got into it enough to feel like I was getting a work out. Hot yoga really works for me - and I feel like I have had a workout afterward. Many studios give a "trial" membership, like unlimited classes for a week for $25 or so. I'd recommend trying to go 2-4 times the first week just to get a feel for it. (Unless you just hate it!) If you really don't like being where it is warm, it may not be for you.
Good Luck!
K.
