We are having a birthday party on Saturday for a bunch of girls. I thinking of having a hot dog bar-like a potato bar but with hot dogs and I'm at a loss at what to use as toppings. Any other ideas would also be welcome.

Topppings for hot dogs:
Chilli, pickles, relish, mustard, ketchup, coleslaw, onions, cheese both slices and shredded these are the few that come to mind for me,,, Hope this will help! Grilling the buns with a touch of butter helps make a yummy sandwich with coleslaw on top called a slaw dog! <if they donot want to put the coleslaw on top of the hot dog then it makes a great side dish also!> L.

Salsa! regular kind and pineapple and mango salsa. You can find it already in a jar. Safeway has GOOD ones.
Its real good on hot dogs!

Bacon
cheese
onions
crushed potato chips
BBQ beans (from in a can)
Regular & seasoned Ketchup... they have spicy ones now...
pickles
Sweet & Sour Sauce
Ranch Dressing to drizzle on
Onion Rings

You might want to get some hot-dogs from Whole Foods or something... without the chemicals. If that concerns you.
Or good ol' Polish or beef dogs from Costco. Its good. Much better than those "red" dyed generic hot dogs from the supermarket.

Sounds like a good idea you have!
Good luck,
Susan

If you do have hot dogs just make sure you offer something else like mac and cheese or spaghetti or chicken nuggets. My son loves hot dogs but I know a lot of kids that won't go near them, especially if they grow up in homes that stay away from processed meats. You can also get nitrate free ones and turkey dogs. for toppings: chili is a good one and so is cheese. :)

I love the idea of a hot dog bar!

Pico de Gallo is a good topping. We had that at one of my daughter's birthday parties and it went fast. Mostly the adults but you can make it/ buy it where it's not spicy.

Onions, chili, ketchup, mustards (spicy brown and yellow), relish, sauerkraut and grated cheeses (cheddar, swiss, monterey jack), dill pickles and hot sauces come to mind. Some people even like tomato slices on their dog. Sounds fun!

I agree that most kids only use ketchup. Offering the other stuff is good too but it really depends on their ages. If they are Primary age then they may not like anything on them. If they're YW then hot dog sauce, it's like chili except it is a finer grind on the meat. I can't remember if it's Wolf brand or Hormel that Ilike, I have a friend who made some for a RS meeting with TVP and it was pretty good too. That and chips, maybe some Frito's for Chili pies, and lots of grated cheese. I know adults like lots of other stuff but I don't really think kids do.

I have found that kids like all sorts of things on their hot dogs from my experience as a school cook and a camp cook. Try having the usual ketchup, mustard, relish and yes, mayo! Add bowls of warmed hot dog chili that comes in small cans. Try shredded cheddar cheese, or even warmed cheese sauce. Also don't forget sauerkraut and cole slaw (I love a slaw dog!). That's just basics, but use your imagination: shredded lettuce and finely chopped tomatoes and cucumbers and chopped black olives and even chopped onions (try a sweet Vidalia)... the list is endless

You know, when I was a kid I was not too fond of the toppings. I was a katchup only kinda gal. However, you have some really great ideas below for topings. I just wanted to thorw out there taco bar? Pizza bar? Ice cream sundae bar? Tacos would be way easy. Just some other thoughts. Love the hot dog idea....just not a big fan of the hot dog toppings when I was younger that is. Now, would love all the toppings mentioned below! :) Good luck!
