I have a choice of two hospitals to deliver at and was just wondering if anyone out there had any experience at either one of them for labor and delivery, pros and cons. Alexian Brothers in Elk Grove Village and Central Dupage in Winfield. Both are pretty much the same distance from my house. Thanks for any advice.

What can I do next?

Hi! I delivered both my children at Central DuPage and was extremely happy with the experiences! Once you get to the Mother/Baby Unit (post-delivery), it's more like staying in a really nice hotel than a hospital -- 100% private rooms, order your meals via room service, dessert cart comes around every evening, etc. The nurses have no problem with your decision of how much to keep your baby in the room (vs. leave in the nursery). I thought the availability of lactation consultants was excellent at CDH also (although it can get pretty busy during the "prime" feeding hours, as you can imagine!)

I strongly recommend you take a tour of each hospital before making your decision. I know CDH offers free tours for prospective parents and I'll bet Alexian Bros. does too. I took the tours very early in my pregnancy (8 weeks or so!) because it impacted the OB group I selected.

Best Wishes!!

I delivered all 3 of my girls at CDH. I had one single birth, and twins. The experience with my first was really great. They had the new birthing rooms where you labor and deliver in the same room. I had a good experience ( except for the nasty back labor). The nurses were great, providing me with many laboring options. I used one of those exercise balls, I sat in the shower, I walked the halls. I had decided to not do an epidural, and they were fine with my plans, no pressure.

With my second, I had a good experience as well, however since I was delivering twins I had to be in an operating room for delivery,in case of an emergency c-section. It wasn't the same comfy atmosphere as the first, but the nurses and staff there were great.

I had my youngest at Central DuPage in December 2007 and I had an awesome experience - from the nurses to the doctors to the environment. I had a scheduled c-section, so I was in the operating room and can not comment on the actual birthing room process. However, from the operating room, I was taken to the recovery room and then to my own private room. I love that all the rooms are private as I have heard that in some hospitals you have to share a room with someone else. I also had some trouble with breastfeeding at first and the lactation consultants at the hospital were very helpful and very nice. Overall, I would definitely recommend CDH.

My daughters were both born at CDH, and I loved it there. The rooms were very nice and comfy (you can take a tour), and the nurses in the labor & delivery room were GREAT!! They had me up and walking and sitting on the ball to make me comfortable and help my labor. My only bad memory is after my 2nd daughter was born, the nurses for post-partum were not very attentive. I waited a LONG time when I needed something. Oh yeah, another great thing we did there was a class for my older daughter before the baby was born about how to be a big sister (Babies Need Buddies). It was cute and she enjoyed it. Good luck!
