Horrible Back Pain

I am 28 weeks pregnant and have horrible back pain on the right side. I was told it is his/her foot in my rib cage. Is there any way to get get this child to move their foot. I am in pain 24/7 and just wanna cry it hurts so bad. I do work a very stressful job in an office setting and an avg. work 60-64 hours a week. My doctor said to slow down and I am in the process of cutting my hours back but will this help me out with the back pain. I have never had this with any of my other pregnancies.

Thanks for any advice that you can offer I am more than willing to try anything at this point!

So What Happened?

I had an ultrasound done at the last appointment last week and it shows the baby as far down as he/she can get without coming out and the legs straight up in my ribs. This is why I didn't ask for a more in depth exam. I figured the ultrasound backed up what the doctor was telling me. I kinda feel sorry for the little thing being all smashed up outside his/her legs.

Dear T. L.,
This may sound silly, but when I was pregnant with my oldest daughter she really liked to lay on my kidney on the right side causing severe back pain. My family doctor at the time advised me that when the pain is really bad (unbearable) to get down on my hands and knees and rock back and forth. He said that would make the baby move and alleviate the pain. I had to do just that several times and it really does work. Hope this helps out!

Try some yoga or dromedary droops (one of the stretches found in the What to Expect book). Maybe stretching will make your little one shift position. I would think it's weird though that it's been going on for a while and your doctor still thinks it's a foot. Babies change positions all the time.

Maybe ask your doctor if it could be a pinched nerve, a muscle spasm or even shingles. Shingles can cause that kind of pain up in the rib cage area. Go back and ask for a more in depth exam.

a friend on mine told me to lay on my left side and gently push on the top of my stomach. usually he moves after that. i haven't had a problem with his feet in ribs anymore...just everything into my bladder lol (i'm 33 wks). yes, cutting hours should help with back pain!! i hope it solves it for you~

I would also suggest a chiropractor, specifically someone trained in the Webster technique, which is focused on pregnant mamas & children. I work as a doula & massage therapist & send mamas to my local Webster doctor all the time with great success. The technique helps specifically with getting the baby in a good position in the pelvis (which would mean out of your ribs) You can find a listing of them at www.icpa4kids.com. Also, try massage therapy. Massage and chiropractic work great together--as massage helps deal with the soft tissue inflammation that sometimes pulls your bones out of alignment. Good luck!

You can see a chiropractor. He can make this more comfortable for you safely and effectively. Mine takes care of expectant mommies all the time!

I would go and see a chiropractor. I had never been to one until this pregnancy with my DH insisting I go. Wow, he's a life saver. I feel so much better everytime I go.

My top recommendation is to find a licensed acupuncturist. Find someone who has experience treating woman in pregnancy. I had the same thing andnwork a lot. It wasn't until I cut back that the pain stopped. Also. You could try a chiropractic adjustment as well. Give acupuncture at least 4-5 times. Good luck!

Oh no! I don't have any advice. Just support. I had the same thing happen with my son. Except he had his little foot jabbing at my ribs in my left side. It is extremely painful. I feel for ya. I just lived with it....with MUCH complaining of course. I would try to push in right there to get him to move his little foot but he was a stubborn little guy...still is. Congrats on your baby and good luck getting him/her to move their tootsies.

If you are experiencing general stress and tension, job-related or otherwise, it does frequently tighten your muscles, which then feel more pain and can further affect your skeletal system, creating yet more pain and tension. So anything you can do to relax more will probably help. '

A friend of mine was having such bad back pain she was hospitalized a few times, and was finally being advised to have disc surgery. On the recommendation of another woman with a similar history, she started doing yoga, and her pain diminished very quickly to a quite tolerable level. She still has pain when stressed.
