My 13 year old daughter, who is in 8th grade, is struggling again in public school this year and my husband and I are condsidering homeschooling her. Does anyone know of a co-op or H.S. group in the Woodlands/Spring/Conroe area that would both get us out of the house and in contact with other homeschooling families and would also offer options/alternatives to me teaching all of her subjects and providing all of her social and extracurricular activities? I have never homeschooled before and need all the advice I can get!

God Bless,
J.

I have always homeschooled my children and love it. I wouldn't have it any other way. There is an all-inclusive group called MASH in the area that has park days coops and field trips. There is also a Christian group called homewood that has many activities as well. There is a lot of support out there. There is also a group called new beginnings that offers support for people who are new to homeschooling. It is a lot of work, but a lot of fun. Anyone can do it, the curriculum is so good now that if you can read, you can teach ANY subject. You know your kids better than anyone and can teach them best. It is a joy to watch your children learn. I live in The Woodlands area and there is a lot of support out here.

If you go on the mash site, there is info on new beginnings. I love having my kids around all day. If you ever meet kids in the homeschooling community, you will see that they are awesome kids. You will not be disappointed. Don't let the schools intimidate you. You can do it.

Hi J.!

Our family has always homeschooled. I have two daughters - ages 12 and 13. We are members, and I teach, at an education center called Extraordinary Education. www.extraed.org. Our school is a large house on some acreage on the backside of The Woodlands (off 2978). It is a wonderful organization with lots of children in the middle school/junior high age group. We provide core classes, extracurricular activities, family support, and more. Visit the website for more details. There are a lot of homeschoolers in The Woodlands area. There is a great website that lists all the area support groups and education options in Texas - visit http://www.jsoft.com/archive/taffie/ for that info. Homeschooling has been a wonderful experience for our family. It is not something you have to "go alone". There are lots of opportunities for social and educational support in the area.

Hey J. :) I have 2 daughters now 23 and 27 that I homeschooled. It was a challenge with the oldest so she graduated when she was 18. But the youngest has always had her agenda for life as she calls it, and graduated when she was 16. Rae (27) will graduate from Angelina College on Dec. 6th with her RN being a single mom with sole responsibility for 3 yr old. Micki, 23, will graduate January 10th with her degree in Criminal Justice. Oh and she is a mom of a 2 yr old and new baby will be here the 17th for sure if not before.
I used Abecca as curriculum and supplemented with other items; also went on field trips that I seemed to enjoy as much as they did and even learned a few things myself. Please contact the Texas Home School Association; also we are fortunate in TX to have a Governor who supports home school. A little known fact is the school that your daughter attends should also aide you in your search. (They may try to talk you out of this) On the Conroe Independent School District website, there is a section for home school.
I got all the typical comments about "no social skills", no "extra-curricular",etc etc. You do what is right for your daughter and your family. My girls obviously turned out pretty darned good. It is a choice. Good Luck.
