I was diagnosed with Pupps but they went away when I stopped using lotions on my stomach. Just a thought.
I was diagnosed with hives of pregnancy a little after mid way through my pregnancy (not PUPPS, actual hives). When I took benadryl they would come back the next day but when I took the perscription vistaril they would stay gone for three days and eventually a week or so. Now it is the same thing only it is at least a week in between bouts when I take the vistaril but back the next day with Benadryl. I don't understand why I am still getting hives. I am nursing, could it be the hormones? The worst part of it is that I have a condition (Breast Hypoplasia) and don't make enough breast milk to begin with and antihistamines dry up milk compounding the issue. Does anyone have any ideas what could be going on or what I should do?

Hi. I too had hives, but not with pregnancy. I got them afterward. I treated them through natural means. I didn't want to take anything that would dry up my milk, so for awhile I was using ice packs which helped ease the itch and swelling. I did acupuncture, took Chinese herbs, stayed away from hot foods (such as peppers, ginger, garlic) and managed my stress (this was the big part) and it is worked great.
Have you been to a Dermatologist?
I know people want to self-diagnose and self-treat with herbal, all natural compounds, but something like that seems suspicious.
Maybe I'm a purist, I believe my doctor has our best interest in mind. But, I've also gone through chemo for what several health care providers weren't really "concerned" about.
I'd get into a Dermatologist/Allergist as soon as possible to find out what your body's reacting to to cause the hives.
Hope I don't alarm you, but I don't like to play around with things like that after going through cancer with 2 small kids.
Hives are a very common reaction to stress & what is more stressful than having a baby?
Do what you can to reduce stress & create a calm, peaceful feeling~easier said than done, I know.
Some tips: deep breathing, meditation, self-hypnosis, yoga, regular vigorous exercise (releases feel-good hormones)
Become of aware of your self-talk, your pattern of thoughts & guide them in a positive direction through affirmations.
A rapid & powerful tool for relief is EFT. Emotional Freedom Techniques is based on the same energy meridians or pathways as used in acupuncture. You can learn basic EFT online. For stubborn issues see an EFT practitioner.
I had the same thing when I was pregnant with my daughter it was bad so itchy . My doctor only let me take benadryl . Any way it does go away but it takes a while I am sorry I have no answer as to help with the breast milk . With my daughter I made enough milk but with having to take medicine for my hives I was nervouse about nursing so we went to formula .
My son got hives every single day for 6 months. It was so upsetting especially beings he was getting them on his face and I knew you could get them in your wind pipe and it can swell shut. So I took him in and assited on more aggresive treatment. His new doctor agreed. he got a steroid shot and darned if the things haven't made an appearance in a week now! I'd go to your GP and ask for something else. Anti-histimines he took every single night and they came back the next day so that wasn't a long term solution like the steroid shot seems to be.
Hi E.,
Not sure if anyone else has suggested this, but I began getting hives around the time after delivering my 2nd daughter...didn't know what it was, but through my own research I figured out I have an allergy to sunlight. Which seems so random! I never even knew there was such an allergy to have. Only a small amount of time in the sun, and within hours the hives come, and can last a day, or weeks, depending on the amount of time I was in the sun. You may want to Google "sun allergy" and read a little about it.
All the best,
K.
