When my son was younger, he frequently broke out in hives. Sometimes it would get so bad I had to take him in to a pediatric urgent care.
I was told there, and by my own Dr., that hives are very difficult to diagnose, since many things can cause them. Viruses can cause hives, as can allergies. Since your son seems to get them at the same time of the year, it suggests allergies. Perhaps something is blooming at that time that he is allergic to.
Benadryl helps. If it gets really bad, your pediatrician can prescribe something, but in most cases Benadryl helped us. They can be very disturbing.
I'd definitely bring it up at his next well check up.
Good luck!
