Hi,

I have absolutely no idea on this one. My son graduated early (the rest of his class will graduate June 2013) but he finished today, right before Christmas break. What type of gift does one get for their child graduating high school ? I have no idea. Do most people have a party of some type as well ? We live in a place with no family, and are not close with anyone, so would a family party be the thing to do ? Any comments would be appreciated. Thanks.

What can I do next?

You can do as suits you and your family. We did have friends who's kids all graduated at the same time and had a BBQ at a park. The day of it we had dinner with family.

A dinner with his friends sounds wonderful. Dinner and a movie sounds good.

My youngest will graduate in May. We will get him a lap top to use for college like we did his brother.

Whatever you want. In my opinion, graduating high school is its own gift, so anything over that is gravy.

A little more info would help. What is planning to do with his life? College, trade school, or a job?

Going out to dinner to celebrate his accomplishment is a good idea.

Go out to dinner and let him bring a couple friends.

Give a congratulatory card and bit of money to help with his future.

New clothes suitable for whatever he will be doing next.

He already has the best gift -- he is done with high school and about to embark on the next stage of his life, whether that is working, traveling, or college.

I don't know about "most people" but I personally don't know anyone who threw a party for their high school graduate, but that doesn't mean you can't if you want to.

We did: Family Dinner out at a nice restaurant, Grandparents got him a super slick laptop, we got him cash, then we threw him a friends party on an open weekend.

Cash
Or gift certificates.

You can have a family dinner.
Then, he as the Graduate... graduates like to go out, with their friends, and party or go to a party or go out visiting all their friends at their parties.

I am sure, he must have friends... and his friends will invite their friends to their parties etc. So talk to him and see... what he or his friends are up to and what he wants to do.

When I grad from High School... my parents made a party for me and ALL my class was invited. Sure its pricey. But at that time, that is what families/the graduates did. Don't know if that is the same way, now.
Then, I ALSO, went... with MY friends (sans family), to my friends parties. Too.

It varies around here. There are a lot of huge parties thrown in honor of the graduate and the attendees are usually the graduate's classmates, friends and some family.

Again, it is a personal thing.

We do not have family around and our daughter graduates in May of 2013. We do not plan on a huge party but I am sure she will be in attendance of a few.

Our daughter likes CASH. She's getting cash for Christmas, cash for her birthday 12/27 and will get cash for graduation. The amount varies on what you can afford. She is getting $250 for Christmas and $250 for birthday. Her graduation will more than likely be around $500. All come with a few small surprise gifts. She loves to shop, buy her own clothes and she always socks away for savings.

We will do a family thing with a couple or few of her closest friends for graduation and birthday.

Just go with what your family feels comfortable with and what your new graduate wants to do! Congratulations!!

PS: I agree with others regarding a good laptop to get him through college if he has college plans!
