I take her out of her playpen and stand her on the floor and she is fine until she looks down an realizes that she is standing on the floor, then she starts crying and wants to be picked up. I have tried everything even sitting with her on the floor but when I do all she does is crawl to me and start crying for me to pick her up. I need advice on this one. This has never happened to me, not even with my own children and I don't know what else to do. Please help, thanks.

What can I do next?

When they are learning to walk, sometimes they manage to stand up and then don't know what to do next.
Keep sitting on the floor with her, and as long as nothing else is wrong, don't be in a hurry to pick her up.
Play with blocks on the floor, make pillow forts, read a story/look over a picture book, etc.
She'll eventually get interested and forget to be so fussy.

have you tried different flooring? if shes not liking the carpet try bare floors, if not liking bare floor try carpet. what about being outside in the grass? in sand? if you have a foam playmat try that in the fun colors. it kinda sounds like shes just use to being in the playpen or in an exersaucer or being held so shes unfamiliar with the actual floor and needs gentle introduction to it. put her favorite blanket down and put her on that for short bursts till shes ok with it for longer periods.

Do you have some form of flooring she is not used to - if so can you lay down a rug? I've never run into this with flooring. We did with grass. One of ours used to basically crawl up our side to avoid touching it. Thankfully it was a phase.

W. - welcome to mamapedia!

Are you standing her on a mirror? What TYPE of floor are you standing her on?

What does she do when she's at home with her mom and dad? Does she have the same reaction?

What have you tried to do other than picking her up to console her? Have you encouraged her to TRY and walk on the floor?

Take a video of it if it doesn't happen at home and have your daughter or son - whichever - take it to the pediatrician and see if there's a problem.

Thank you everyone I will try all of your suggestions. I do think the difference is on the wood flooring, I put her down on the carpet and she cries but when I sit on the floor with her she stops crying and I start playing with her. One day she was crawling on the carpet floor and got to the kitchen ( wood floor) and when she touched the wooden floor she took her hand of of it and crawled back to me. I will slowly introduce her to the wooden floor and see what happens and she is not this way only with me she does this at home too with her parents and at her home the floors are all wooden floors. Thanks again for all or your suggestions.

Perhaps a few more months will make a difference, and she will grow out of this. BUT, if she doesn't, I would definitely get her to a pediatric opthamologist to have her eyes evaluated. She also may need help from a pediatric OT if she has a spacial issue. If the opthamologist doesn't find something, I'd have a pediatric ENT check to make sure there isn't an inner ear balance issue.

She'll probably do the same thing the first time you stand her on grass. It's just different. Just keep trying but don't force it. This too shall pass!
