I had her to the doctor and she has a sore thorat, but i dunno why she is not drinking from a sippy or bottle ? would it hurt to suck the milk out of the cup that way. She has had no milk in 2 days because of it and I am already getting worried about her, I know she wont starve as long as she eats, but do the fact that she is taking a bottle or sippy cup , she is loosing weight and I dont know where to turn at this point so I thought i would turn to this site for some answers for her . please help me ,I hate seening my little girl like this . If it takes 10-14 days to get over a sore throat i dont want her to go that long any suggestions . I dont know what to do at this point

those pedialyte popsicles are awesome. Hard to find though. I found them once at a Rite Aid or Walgreens.
Honey is safe for her now. I also use a tea called Throat Coat when my kids have sore throats. It contains licorice root, which kids aren't suppose to have a lot of, but I make one cup of it for my kids and they sip on it throughout the whole day. They normally only finish half, but it gives them great relief.

Maybe you could spoon feed her broth? Good luck, this is so not a fun age to have a little sick one. They can only communicate so much.

I would do water, gatorade, pedilyte, popcicles, and/or the pedialyte popcicles.

I was always told to stay away from Milk products if theres throat issues, because it can make it worse.

No worries! Any weigtht loss she might have from having a sore throat is temporary. More than likely she is not drinking because it hurts to swallow. Did doc recommend any tylenol or similar pain reducer? ...anything cold would probably feel good on her throat, you might try a popcicle or frozen yogurt... but some feel better with something warm....not sure if she would go for warm lemon water. It shouldn't take 10-14 days for the soreness to go away. Just make sure she stays hydrated by offering as many liquids as possible. Getting dehydrated is worse than not eating. Just keep offering!

Try the straw cups and also give her popsicles, pedialyte, gatorade, whatever she will drink.

She may not starve, but she can get dehydrated.
That is worse.

Try a straw cup with her.

You really need to be concerned, about Dehydration. Which can occur quickly in baby/child.

You need to talk to your Ped again.
Did they say what she has, or test for Strep, or say what to do about her lack of drinking?

Its possible she's afraid it will hurt to take big drinks. I would not worry that she's not getting milk, but more that she isn't getting fluids. See if she'll drink some juice, broth, water, soda, something that is new/fun as her throat is healing. Keep water out and available to her. Try new ways of getting her to drink, an eye dropper, spoon, sips out of a cup, a straw. These new ways of drinking might help get past her fear of the pain. Anyway, if she just does little drinks all day long, that's fine. You just don't want her to get dehydrated and need to go to the hospital for IV fluids. :)

She'll get through it. My 18month old was sick a week and refused most solid foods. She lost over a lb. of weight from it. We're working to bulk her back up (she was already in the 5th percentile for weight, so she didn't have much to lose). Losing weight is not the end of the world, kids can go days without food, but not without water.

Best wishes, she'll be feeling better soon, just do what you need to to get through it!

my dtr took a sippy cup but my son did for a day and then switched to straw cups on his own. sore throat will make them not eat or drink for a few days, but after 3 i'd take her in. does she have a fever, if so take her now, she could have strep or tonsilitis. better to be safe!!!!

At the store near the place where you would find sippy cups you will see cups with lids and a straw. I would try this.

I wish you both the best and I hope your little one feels better real soon.

God Bless.

She's now old enough to have sips of honey in warm water or herb tea, which is soothing and may also help her throat heal. Honey has natural antibiotic agents in it, and has been used for centuries for sore throats. Some kids also like a squeeze of lemon.

But she really needs fluids, so keep encouraging her. She could get constipated or dehydrated without regular fluid intake. So push water any way you can, with popsicles, herb tea, jello, milk, anything you can get her to swallow. Cold or warm fluids may be soothing. Offer a variety of containers to see if she likes one more than another. She may like a twisty crazy straw.

The first few swallows may be the hardest for her. Sometimes it helps to get one or two swallows down, and a couple of minutes later she may have an easier time.

Good luck. This is a nerve-wracking situation for you, for sure. Let us know how she does.

It could be a sore throat, and you have to remember also that as we get older, we no longer need to "continually" drink the way a baby does from a bottle...now that she should be using it as a drink and no so much as a food, she should only be taking sips and a time...but she needs plenty of them.

She still needs at LEAST 16 oz of milk a day, up to 24, and it would be good to give her water as well. She HAS to have liquid in order not to become dehydrated...this is so important!

You can try a regular cup, or a cup with a lid and straw...they make good ones that aren't very leaky, and don't have a valve so they are easy to suck from. Or just take the valve out of the sippy, but know that it will leak if it's knocked over.

If her throat is really so sore she won't drink, talk to the doctor for suggestions. I believe they also have Pedialyte popsicles.

I would imagine it hurts her throat... Maybe you could have her sip out of a normal plastic cup of milk, you holding it of course. I would definitely have her drink water so she doesn't get dehydrated. Losing weight? Is she still eating well? I would def think it's painful though, there is a lot of times I wouldn't drink because my throat hurt. Do they have throat soother type meds for 1 year olds? I know they make organic type meds now where it's all natural and safe for infants.

She can give up the bottle if she's getting plenty of liquids & nutritious food from a cup or from other dairy like yogurt.

How about trying a real cup (you can help her hold it or let her try and get messy). She might like a cup with a lid and a straw. Our 16 month old likes these two better than sippy cups. She has never liked them for some reason. She's getting really good at using real cups all of a sudden which is great.

By the way, when my daughter had just turned one she did not yet want the sippy cup at all. Just keep working with her - she's very young and will get good at it in the next few months I bet. I'm glad her sore throat is feeling better.

Strep Throat is going around here like crazy. My son got it for the 1st time a few days ago. Has she been tested, because if it is Strep, after the 1st 24 hours on antibiotics, you'll see a big difference. Does she have any other symptoms? My son had just a fever and a sore throat-no cold symptoms. I think 3 days of a sore throat warrants a return trip to the pedi anyway.
I've found popsicles help and I think the kind you have to freeze yourself are the easiest to give little ones because they aren't drippy. If she'll eat, you could try Jello too. Hope she feels better soon :)
