I am currently 8 weeks pregnant with my second child. I did not have any kind of sickness with my first child and now I am sick all the time with this one. I was spoiled the first time. I am constantly nauseaus and it usually gets worse at night while I am sleeping. I have tried eating the small meals and keeping crackers by my bed but that doesn't seem to work. The littlest tasks seems like the biggest deal because I don't feel good all day long. I can not go anywhere without being afraid that I am going to get sick. I know this happens to a lot of pregnant women it just didn't happen to me the first time so any help would be appreciated.

What can I do next?

Congrats on the pregnancy! I experienced severe sickness with my third and last child. The only thing I found to help me was drinking Ice Tea. I don't know why, but it soothed my stomache everytime. Hot tea works for some people too, but the iced tea was better for me. I was constantly making tea for the whole nine months, just incase I needed it. Best of luck to ya!

Ginger is a good friend to the pregnant woman. You might also want to try chewing papaya tablets, available at most health food stores. Sip ginger ale and I found that bland mashed potatoes or whole wheat bread mixed with chicken broth helped too.

I was very sick like that with my 2nd child (not with my first). The only thing I could eat to was chicken broth and room temp ginger ale or sprite.

i didn't read through to see if anyone mentioned ginger yet. ginger is a really good natural cure for nauseau and it worked for me while i was pregnanat (ginger snap cookies, ginger decaf tea, ginger spice sprinkled on food). i felt the exact same way that you do during my pregnancy, so i feel for you! it will get better though.

Talk to your doctor. When I was pregnant both times my doctor gave me a prescription for my nausea, I can't remember what it's called but it worked. It did my me pretty sleepy but at least I didn't feel sick every minute of the day.

Ginger tea was all that seemed to help me and my bf. Try ginger ale instead of water when you are feeling sick. Of course now I can't stand it, but it helped then. HTH's

Nexum, call you doctor and have him/her give you script, it's completely safe to take it while pregnant.
Also, put a rolled up blanket or something under your mattress to lift your head. Sounds like the reflux is worse at night because when you lay down, your muscles have weakened and when you lay down, gravity is making it come out.

I'm not a doctor, but suffered with reflux for most of my life, and then had the acid reflux once I was pregnant. Toward the end of both pregnancies (all the pressure from from the baby), I was sleeping sitting up in a chair or on the couch and took 2 nexum a day.

Raise the head of your bed, get a good blocker like Nexum, and I'm sure you'll get some relief

Hey C.,

Bless your heart...maybe it won't last very long! I would make one correction to a previous post...most advice regarding sleep positions is to lie on your LEFT side, not right side, due to the position of the heart, fetus, the liver, etc. Left side may also help in digestion. One other caution...if you are prone to heartburn - stay away from the peppermint. The ginger is good advice, along with the others...and the only other thing I would add to try is TUMS. Gives you calcium and helps with an acid stomach. If heartburn gets really out of control...take Pepcid. Good luck, and hopefully this is just a short phase.

There are a couple of things I tried during both my pregnancies. Several people had told me about ginger, but even the smell of it made me have to run to the bathroom. Lavender oil worked sometimes. I bought some drops (not the artificial oil but the pure oil) and would put a drop behind both my ears and my neck. I also put some in a bottle with water and sprayed a little on my pillow. That seemed to help part of the time. When all the natural methods didn't work I took phenegrin that my doctor had prescribed. I didn't like taking meds while I was pregnant but I was so sick I was throwing up sometimes 9 times in an hour and would become dehydrated so I would have to take a trip to the ER to get fluids through the IV. If you are throwing up a lot and not just "feeling" sick you may have to take a prescription. It's better than getting dehydrated. Another thing with me was that I felt so bad all the time I didn't want to eat or drink a whole lot. Good luck and congrats, we are trying for our 3rd baby. Another thing I heard about was preggo pops. They are suckers to help with nausea. I have heard good things about them but didn't know about them my last pregnancy so not sure myself.

Peanut butter toast before getting out of bed. Also peppermints are a lifesaver. One other thing I tried was "Gripe Water". It is generally used for babies with colic, stomach issues and teething, so it is safe to use in your pregnancy. It has a not so great (in my opinion taste) but worked quickly. It has fennel and ginger typically used to calm the stomach. Hope that helps.

I had horrible problems with my third child, I found an anti nauseau medicine at the drug store over the counter that seemed to help a bit, and my ob approved using it. Wal-Mart has an equate brand in the pharmacy area also. I sucked on peppermint life savers and disks too. Hope you find some relief!

You could add A&W hard candies to your arsenal. Any hard candy with ginger, licorice, or anise in it will help settle your stomach. Try some tea with the same ingredients, chamomile helps too. If it's acid reflux related, get some picot (it's the same stuff as Alka seltzer without the asprin) to take at night.

Let me start off with congratulations on your 2nd baby;
I have 3 myself, the youngest will be 1 year old tomorrow. I suffered with the nausea throughout each of my pregnancies... morning, noon, night...1st, 2nd, 3 trimester, too! So I can truly say I know how you feel. I tried all the little tricks too, just like you mentioned, but mostly just tried to tough it out, thinking 'Hey, all mamas-2-be go thru this...certainly I can ride it out, too!' Then,to make things worse,my iron was low,so I had to take ferrous along w/my prenatals! Finally,I couldn't take it any longer, and asked my Dr. what secret the other mom's knew that I didn't.'None' came his reply.'Some mom's just get morning sickness, while others do not.' After I made plain the extent of the constant daily nausea I was having to live with,he said the magic word:
EMETROL
You can get it OTC at any drug store.I got to where I just carried the bottle with me,taking small sips when I felt the need. Also,if you're taking your vitamins at a certain time every day, u might try shifting it to a different part of the day,and fill that tummy up good first!
I sure hope this helps you.......Good luck!

Try this:

In equal amounts, pour pineapple juice, 7-up and cranberry juice together and SIP it slowly throughout the day.
Don't use Sprite b/c it is too sweet and may make you even more nauseaus.

I was pregnant with 7 other women in my office and this worked for ALL of us.

So congrats and good luck!!

I would ask your dr. if they could prescribe you something for nausea. A friend of mine was prescribed Finagrin (not sure that is how you spell it, I just spelled it the way it sounds) and she said it worked wonders. Best of luck to you :)

I was that way with all my pregnancies.

Here's a trick I learned with my middle boy, eat protien before you get out of bed in the morning. We chose cheese. I skipped the crackers all together because I had Pre-Eclampsia. I carried peppermints with me every where I went. Peppermint is supposed to help with nausea as is Lemon.

I never drank pop or caffinated drinks to keep the acidity down in my stomach. We also switched from taking my prenatal vitamin at night if it upset my stomach to taking it in the morning so my stomach could rest.

Sleep on your right side to keep the acid from being pushed up into your esophagus. Bending over at the waist can also put pressure on your stomach. Always squat instead keeping your back straight.

hmm, I'll ask my husband what else we did. He remembers that pregnancy a lot better than I do.

Stress can effect this as well.

Hey C.,
Congratulations on your 2nd baby! I just found out that I was pregnant as well, and was having the same trouble. I prefer to take natural supplements whenever possible, so I asked my nutritionist about it. She gave me a product called "Phosfood", and it has worked really well. You just put a few drops into a glass of water and drink it. If you are want to give it a try, call Lorrie Medford @ Life Design Nutrition. Ph.# ###-###-####

Try peanutbutter with crackers before you get out of bed.

Also, my sister had SERIOUS morning sickness with her pregnancy. She lost around 30 pounds in early pregnancy it was so bad and she only weighed about a buck & a quarter to begin with. Her Dr. put her on Zofran. It's supposed to work wonders, but it's expensive! I think they make it in a generic also, but I'm not sure if the generic is as good -check with your Dr.
Good luck!!

Hi C.,

Congrats on your pregnancy! I see that you have received some responses already with advice to use OTC medicines. If you're looking for an alternative way to relieve the nausea without having to take pills, I can tell you what worked for me when I was pregnant. I had pretty bad nausea when I was pregnant for the first 3 months. At first, I tried the crackers and small meals too, but it didn't help. Then I paid more attention to what I ate. I noticed that the smell and taste of beef or pork was the cause of my nausea. Every time I would cook beef or pork or we would go out and I ordered it, I always had nausea. Once I avoided it, I was fine. Now that my daughter is 2 years old, I understand why I had the nausea. Turns out my daughter will only eat chicken. She will not eat any beef or pork, not even a hamburger. Funny thing. I have no problem with eating beef or pork, but I guess the baby didn't want it. Do you think it could be something in your diet that is causing the nausea? If so, try keeping a food diary and see if there is any association with a particular food. Let us know what works for you. Have a safe and restful pregnancy!

I was the same way with my daughter! I feel for you its horrible. there is no real way to fix it but I found a list of things that may help a little. Drink Ginger-ail when your feeling sick. Dont stay in bed after you already wake up. Try and get out of your house... I know that sounds like a bad idea but sometimes if you arent cooped up all day to think about it you feel better. At Babies R' us they have little morning sickness drops you can suck on too.
