Help with Hair...

After I had my second child I noticed my hair thinning. I have fine wavy hair to begin with and now the thinning is more noticalbe. I've read about all the tricks like high/lightening your hair, layering, etc. I'm familiar with the products to make your hair fuller and use protectants to keep my hair as healthy as possible. I'm terrified of losing my hair. Has anyone tried anything that has boosted hair growth? Anything that worked or didn't work for them?

Hi N.,

My 81 year-old mom had trouble with her hair thinning recently. You could literally see through the hair right to her head all over. I talked to this hairdresser who suggested we try Nioxin shampoo and thickener. It is really expensive, like $25 a bottle or something, but you only use a dime size for shampoo and a pea size for the thickener. For the first time in months her hair is thickening! Give it a try. They sell it at TGF hair cutters.

Good luck!

I'm going to respond first, then read all the advice you get after! I have this same problem and I'm freaking out. Mu hair is fine, but use to be very thick. It's been going on with me for about 15 years and it has stablized, but just got thin. Not anything noticable to anybody but me. I have tried many things, and this list is just to help you not to bother with some of this...Hair and nail vitamins, Nioxin, Big, Sexy, Hair. While these things did help slightly, it wasn't much. Now I did use Rogain for a while and that does work, but if you stop loosing it, you will re-loose the hair you gained. Rogain can also make you slightly dizzy which is why I don't use it anymore. Omega oils are helpful in stabilizing and thickening your hair. It's also good for so many other things.
Also, do you use Pantene? I love it, but it causes my hair to thin when I use it every day. Other people I've talked to have the same problem. If you use it, you can rotate it with other products. I have also heard that a DHT blocker is very good - I haven't tried it yet.
Okay, having said all of that, it is possible that this is just a reaction to giving birth. This does happen and then the hair grows back. Was the second child a different gender? That can cause temporary hair lose. Are you stressed toooooooo much? That hinders hair growth too.
Alright - that's all the useless information that I have on this subject. I hope it's just a temporary thing that's going on with you. Go bless you and your family, and I hope you find an answer.

the same thing happened a few months after my son was born, and you could see it noticably thinning. However, it stopped after a few months and my hair has grown back to normal. Your body is reacting to the stress, assuming your baby is little. As far as products go, you could try a root volume.

Try MSM, it's a supplement, will help with your joints. I use it for my joints and my hair grows like crazy. Hope this works for you. MSM is completely safe and nontoxic to your system.

Ask your Dr about your thyroid. Sometimes it is outa wack after women have their babies. Mine did that...thinning hair was a symptom.

Sounds like a hormone problem. You need to get your doctor to check. All those other things are just cosmetic to hide the thin hair, but you need to find out what is making it fall out or thin more.

THere are some very good hair, skin and nail vitamins out there. Try one and see if that helps. Get one from a reputable company. Make sure you are getting complete protein in your diet as well. Good nutrition is key.

How old is your second child? It's fairly normal to start losing some hair around the 3-5 month old mark, but it comes back, so I don't think you will see permanent loss. My hair is actually a lot more full and wavy now than it ever was before I had kids (it was always pretty thin and straight). It's strange that I have totally different hair now than before kids. Mine was coming out in clumps when both of my kids were infants, but it's fine now. I don't have any product suggestions for you, but thought you might feel better knowing it probably wouldn't be permanent depending on how old your baby is.

If I were you I'd talk to my doc about a physical to make sure there isn't anything else going on. Thyroid issues, anemia, and PCOS can all result in thinning hair.

Some women continue taking their prenatal vitamins. It helps with your hair and nails.

I use Paul Mitchell's Tea Tree LEMON SAGE THICKENING SHAMPOO & CONDITIONER. I pay about $11.50 each for them. It is well worth it. I get a lot of compliments on my hair. I buy them at a hair salon inside of Wal-Mart.

Good Luck.

Definitely, definitely check with your doctor first. My mom passed away a few years ago due to hypothyroidism - and thinning hair is one of the first signs. A thyroid level check is quick and easy and one thing that you want to rule out - that you're not just prone to thinning hair, but that there may be something medically WRONG that is causing your hair to fall out.

When you are pregnant, you do not lose as much hair as you usually do. so alot of times after you have the baby, within a few months the hair will start to fall out. Sometimes it won't start falling out until you are done breastfeeding. When I was pregnant with my first, my hairstylist warned me that this would happen and to not flip out! with both my kids this happened to me, and it all came back.

Well all women start loosing hair at some point. Are you in your early 40's? I started loosing hair in my late 30's, but it is hereditary with my moms side of the family.

If your doctor checks you out and all is normal, you may need to just find some good shampoo and conditioner made for thinning hair. I use Naproxin. Then you will need to purchase some minoxidil for women.. The store brand is the same as the name brand.

Isn't aging fun?
