My 1 1/2 year old twin girls refuse to sleep the entire night. They are currently in the same room at night. I have tried everything short of separating them into different rooms. They fall asleep with great ease but they don't stay that way. I have tried the soothing music, nite lights, teddy, and even a tv on low in the room and nothing works. They wake up and want to get in my bed. please give me some hope or ideas as to how to make this better

What can I do next?

Take out the night light, the music, anything that is distracting. Block out as much light as possible. This is what my ped recommended.

My son still isn't sleeping through the night most nights. He's almost 21 months. He never made it through the night, though, until I did those things.

T.,
My heart goes out to you. I am a twin myself. My mom had two older boys when she found out she was having twins. I was a small baby compared to my twin Brother. My mom had her handsful and I am sure you do. I was a sick baby I had two Open heart surgerys by the time I was a year old. My dad was never at home. He was a Truck Driver.
My best bit to tell you is to keep trying and evenally after a while you will find something that works for you. I don't know how you or anyone else does it. I have a 10 month old baby girl myself and I have problems with just her alone at night sometimes.

LOL! I have BB twins who are now 3 1/2 yrs old. They are a trip. There are two big brothers ahead of the twins, who had no problems sleeping, even when transitioned to a bed after the crib. My twins on the other hand, they slept good while in the cribs for the most part but when we transferred them to beds, oh goodness. They end up asleep on the landing of the stairs everynight, we put them in bed around 10 pm and they stay put for the rest of the night. The only suggestion I can make is let them talk to each other and if any crying insues then time it. After 5 minutes go in and let them know quietly it is time for night night and to lay down. Try to wait longer after a couple of nights and continue to build up. I found not touching them helps (sad but helps) then turn and leave. Are you able to leave the door open? We do at night so the twins don't feel scared, including when they were in their cribs. It's like they have a partner and are able to face any challenges/create havoc!! I wish you the best and lots of luck with school!!

Hi T.,

First of all let me start off by saying you defiantly have your hands full and congrats on twice a blessing. As for the girls not sleeping through the night are they getting enough to eat? Sometimes kids will wake up during the night because they were not entirely full when they went to sleep. As for putting them in your bed, it will be harder to break them and they seem to have you trained to get them in your bed. Give the girls a lite snack prior to bed, such as carrots sticks or a sugar free cookie with a glass of milk. Do not give them grapes the natural sugar will probably make them hyper, and that is the last thing you want to happen. If the girls wake up just monitor them, but do not get them. If they know you are coming they will not go back to sleep. They will fuss at first go in tell them to go back to sleep and sooth them. Don't stay long. Make each night shorter time periods to going to them and eventually they will get it that you are not going to change their sleeping arrangements. I hope that helps and good luck. If not one else is telling you I'm proud of you for keeping your studies up.

Maybe they are telling you they need more of mommy. I am a big fan of Dr. Sears, and he says in situations like this to put a bed or mattress, or make a bed for them beside your bed..that way, they are close to you but not hogging up all the covers!

I don't have twins but when my son was younger he always tried to get into bed with us. I like you was going to school during the day and working alot so I just figured he wasn't getting enough mommy time. So I just told him that he was too big to get into bed with mommy but that we would make a bed on the floor for him and if he needed to come in during the night he could sleep there. He did this forever but after we talked about it he never woke mommy up and I finally got the rest I needed.

Hi T., I have 2 year old twin boys and have luckly not had this problem. Are your girls still in cribs? If not, the only suggestions I have are to seperate them or maybe for you to sleep in their room for a couple nights.

well they are definitely at the age where they need to be spending the nights in their beds, and not waking up. There is something that is waking them up, whether it be each other, or a noise on the street. Have you tried a sound machine. We purchased a room purifier when our daughter was little as she had allergies and it helped. well on the higher setting it creates a medium air blowing sounds. She is now 5 and she swears it helps her sleep and helps her stay asleep. We travel with it and she never has any trouble. I say though that if they are getting up and getting in your bed, to take them right away back to their beds and get them tucked in and do this consistently. this way hopefully they will learn they are not going to get in your bed if they do get up and will just stay and fall back asleep in their own beds.

Hi T.,

I'm the mom of twin girls myself. Of course they are now 12 years old...but I went through the same thing you're describing. Do they sleep in the same crib? The reason I asked, when my twins kept waking up during the night...and I had tried virtually everything..I finally decided to try putting them in the same crib...and it worked! They started sleeping throughout the night. I guess they just needed to be close to each other. As you already know, twins have a very special and powerful bond.
If you havent tried this...give it a shot..and hope for the best.

Good Luck,

C.
