I got my daughter's first comstume from parentcenter.com. They have really cute costumes on that site for very young babies.
My daughter is going to be 1 year old, 3 days after Halloween. I know she's probably not going to remember it, but I still want her to enjoy it. My problem is, I don't really know what to do for fun with her. And also, I don't know what to dress her up in. Everyone I usually ask suggest a pumpkin. But that's not really my style and, I don't really have much money to work with. If you have ANY ideas at all I'm wide open for suggestions. Thank you.

She could be a little angel (just need a white long sleeved onsie) and you can make/or buy the wings and halo very inexpensively. Or she could be a ghost- can cut up a white pillow case with a hole through one of the corners and the sides for her head and arms. She could be a little witch- buy a birthday hat and get black construction paper to wrap around it and some dry spaghetti for the broom.
Hi A.
The first halloween is important as any first. You can dress her as a scraw crow if u want all u need is overalls and a flannel shirt, get a straw hat and put a little red on her cheeks. There is special stuff u can get for that.

Hi A.!
As far as a costume you can try a second hand store for a baby costume - Once Upon A Child, there is also a place in Lindenhurst not to sure of the name or even a church store & most of the time you can get things at a great price.
And for fun you can hand out candy with her & sit outside & watch all the trick or treaters. Some of the costumes are pretty colorful. Also many local libraries have Halloween parties for kids & in Seaford @ St James Church the Knights of Columbus sponsors a Halloween party for all kids. My son was 3m old when we went last year.
Check online you might be surprised what you can find.
Good luck & Happy Halloween!

Hi A.,
My son was only about 4 months old last Halloween and I made a last minue decision to buy him a costume. I also didn't want to spend money on something that he wouldn't remember. Luckily, Babies R Us had costumes at 1/2 price the week before Halloween. Selection was limited, though. He was a giraffe and it was really cute. I just brought him to work and to visit family. It made for great pics that he can look at when he's older.
Hey A.,how exciting for your daughters first Halloween! You definitely should celebrate. My son was 4 months old for his first and we went trick or treating with a friend who has older children 6 & 9.I just pushed him around in the stroller while the girls got candy and had my son dressed as a cow.Got a great deal the week before from Childrens Place. He looked very cute and comfy and I got to get back into the spirit of Halloween by seeing all the neighborhood kids dressed up!Maybe if you have friends with older kids you could walk around with them.I'm sure your daughter would love being around the other kids. You could also look online for costume ideas that you could make from stuff she already has.Good luck!
My daughter was 9 months on her first halloween. She went as aa skunk wich was perfect since she has always been "my stinkpot." I gt the costume at Kohl's which has some realy nice costumes for $25. If that is too much then look in magazines like Parents for handmade costume ideas. Also make sure you get a picture to remember this time. take her Trick or treating but only to a few houses. Just so she gets a lil candy. More likely she will get some coins for her piggy bank than candy.
Also i would suggest going pumkin picking with her. She can enjoy the animals if there are any and the simple joy of picking out a pumpkin. Finger painst are washable and make a great medium for decorating pumpkins!
Check your local consignment shop. I got Tigger & Pooh costumes for my girls a few years ago that were in great shape & didn't break the bank! This time of year they put out the gently used costumes. Bonus is you can probably sell it back when you're done!
A.,
Check oldnavy.com for costumes, or oriental trader. Cute things, not too expensive.
Take a look at the mall near you, they usually do a halloween day where the kids come dressed in their costumes and get stuff handed out at each store.
Take lots of pictures, you're going to love them later.
Do you sew? I made a pumpkin costume when my first child was her age and all my kids have worn it over the years. You could make anything! Also look at Salv. Army, Goodwill, consignment shops. Put up an ad in your grocery store looking for a costume.
Have fun and take pictures no matter what she ends up wearing!

I'm twice your age but still went crazy. I bought her cosumes while I was still pregnent. I couldn't decide so I had purchased them all on clearance I had a pumpkin, frog, giraffe, & princess. I couldn't get them all on her in one day but did it in two. She had no idea what all the fuss was about. I took a lot of pictures which made it very worth it. Try not to get anything too expensive, remember it's one day. If you wait until right before halloween the selection will be less but the prices will be way down. I'm also sending you a personal message. My daughter was 3 in June, last year we went to about 6 houses and she was very excited. Now that she's older I buy her more costumes that she wears to play "dress up" all year long. As a baby they don't play dress up yet but once they get older they have a lot of fun dressing up. I go after halloween and buy a whole bunch of costumes when they're 75% or more off in bigger sizes. I also buy her the dress up kits that they sell. Have a great night.

She might not remember it, but you will! As the big day gets closer you can start looking for things in your community to do. Most malls have something, the YMCA usually does something, if you live in a town, lots of small towns do trick-or-treating at stores.
If you're at all good at sewing, you can make a costume (when she's bigger you can just staple, but right now she could get scratched).
My sister turned her daughter into a pot of flowers: carboard box covered in some red fabric from an old T-shirt for the flower pot, green leggings, green hoodie and then she made flowers and attached them to the sleeves and hood. It was really cute and her little girl was warm enough for trick-or-treating in the cold.
If you aren't the arts and crafts type I recommend Walmart and Target for costumes. They have really cute ones for babies.
If she is in daycare you can also talk to the other moms and the teachers to see what they are doing for the big day. My daycare has a little parade. And if any of the other moms have bigger kids they may have costumes to lend.
My daughter was only 9 months old her first halloween and my son was only 2 months old! I dressed them up and went to family and friends houses and close neighbors! Just think if she gets candy you can eat it! haha My daughter was a flower and my son was a monkey! I think I still have my daughters flower costume if your interested you can have it! I live in Seymour! Let me know!
I dressed my daughter on her first Halloween in red tights, red shirt, made little horn and cover a wooden spoon as a pitch fork since baby devils don't have forks either. It was a big hit in our neighborhood. We also went trick or treating to our neighbors but refused the treats.
Hello, how r you. I was in Marshalls the other day and they already have Halloween customs and not a bad price. Take some time and check it out. My son's where little animals when they where small now they are power rangers and spiderman.. what can you do.
Hi A.,
My daughter is 9 months old and I don't really want to do a pumpkin either - that seems best for really little babies - we were at Babies R Us in the village last weekend and they had some cute and not very expensive costumes - they had a black cat costume in the 12-18mo size that was very cute (just a little too big for my daughter). Since my daughter is too little for trick-or-treating I've been looking around and most of the zoos, the children's museum of the arts and the central park conservancy all seem to have events.

try looking on ebay also, you may be able to find something cheap, never used!

Look at those sites for some ideas for do-it-yourselfers. They've got a great selection!
Have fun! Take lots of pictures!
Hi A.,
My son was a year old last year for halloween, he was walking well by then so we took him trick or treating. He had a little pumpkin he carried in his hands, and after a house or two of people putting candy in it, he got the idea and became insistant that it go in the pumpkin. When people would let him pick or hand him the candy he woul put it in his pumpkin and look inside. Anyway, the point was that Trick Or Treating may be fun to do with your daughter, but for a short trip.
As for a costume, you can always put her in a dress, put her hair up, and put a little makeup on her cheeks and nose to make her look like a doll. Maybe put "stitching" on her, and an apron, and make her look like a ragdoll. I also sugget checkign on ebay or in thrift stores for costumes. Try looking in Yahoo for freecycle in your area. It is a website that is basically "recycling" things that are still in usable shape instead of throwingthem out. People place requests, or offers, and other people in their area see them and say "hey I need that!" or "Hey! I have that they can have!" and are able to get the items. Try looking it up, it may be very helpful to you.

My Daughter was about 1 year last year at Halloween time. We dressed her up in a dog costume because she always got so excited when she would see dogs and would say arf arf all the time. We got the costume at one of those party stores for about $17.00. I dressed her up a few days before Halloween so she would get used to it and she loved looking in the mirror and running around the house saying arf arf.
On Halloween we just sat out on our front stoop and gave out candy to all the trick-or-treaters. She loved seeing all the kids in their costumes.
I'm sure you'll have fun whatever you do.
all the best.- B.
hi, i'm not sure if you have a membership to bj's, costco, or sam's club..but i was in bj's yesterday, and i saw some outfits for $15-30...they had dogs, bears, bunnies, and i think a dragon (which for some reason my friend had her son be his 1st 2 halloweens)and those were just the costumes that i noticed for younger children. my daughter was a lady-bug for her 1st (only 6 1/2 months old at the time). i took her to a&p (where i worked during my pregnancy), neighbors houses, my mother's friend's house and their neighbors, my grandmother's house, and then my MIL's work...just about everywhere that there would be people who always want to see her. i know most stores do the trick-or-treating thing. so you can try in there...but as for something really fun, i was told that sesame place is doing fireworks or something like that for halloween. good luck, and even if you just go to some friend's and/or family member's houses...she'll get a kick out of showing off to them. just take pictures and even if she won't really remember, at least yrs down the line she can look back at the pictures. have fun!
Hello A.,
I'm not sure what town you live in but Adventureland in Farmingdale has something every year (free admission) where the kids can dress up and go trick or treating around the park. I've never been but I am going to take my son their for the first time this year.
Did you try Babies R Us for costumes? They have some really cute costumes for the little ones. How about the bunny rabit, a baby princess or something like that?
Good Luck.
I think its great that you want to create a fun, festive environment for your daughter and even though she may not remember it specifically, those fun times will become part of her overall experience as she grows and develops. My son was born 2 days before halloween and for his first halloween experience I took him to the local elementary school halloween party (in the school gym) There were lots of little kid games and activities and little toy prizes, etc. - it was free and there was no candy- which I was glad for because I felt he was too young for candy at that time. He had a blast being around the other kids and all the activity and seeing all the costumes. And as far as costumes go, a friend of mine made a simple costume for her for her son's first Halloween for the local Halloween parade (another idea for a fun time) and won first prize, it was basically a black body suit and tight (a legging would work too- and probably in any color combo) and then she made wings and painted them with glitter and attached strips of flowy organza type fabric from the edges to make him into a butterfly- it was adorable. If you don't have time for that you can check the consignment shops for costumes. Last year we got a great dragon for almost nothing. Have fun:)
