Hello,
Im a first time momma of a beautiful lil boy. He is coming up on three weeks old and i was wondering if it is normal for a baby this young to go 8 to 12 hours between bowel movements. Has anyone else delt with this??

What can I do next?

Hey B.! Didn't have this issue myself; I guess I have poopy babies!! BUT, my sis-in-law has a son that is 3 months old and he goes days sometimes between poops. This has been an issue for him his whole short little life. His doctor says everything is OK!!

B.,

Baby's his age can go days, even up to 10 days without pooping at all and it is totally normal. Of course if this does happen, you better watch out when he does decide to go. If it is only 8 to 12 hours, you are doing great!

Being a first-time mom is so wonderful. Enjoy every minute of it. You will get to sleep someday. =)

It really depends on the baby. My daughter would sometimes only poop 3-4 times a week, and her doc said it was normal as long as she wasnt straining or in pain and no poop was coming out.

That is definitely normal if he is breastfed. Babies use virtually all of the breastmilk, therefore creating no waste. Formula fed babies tend to have more frequent bowel movements for the exact opposite reason. As long as there are plenty of wet diapers, he is doing great.

Yes, especially if he is breastfed. Docs don't start to worry until around the 5 day mark, unless it's accompanied with severe bloating and abdominal pain.

Even if he's formula fed, 8 - 12 hours isn't really that long, nothing to worry about.

My grandson since birth has only had one to two bowel movements in a day. So it is just what they are doing. But if it changes color, consistency, or is less frequent, I would ask the pediatrician.

This is very normal. Especially if he is breastfed, babies can go up to 3 days without having a BM if they are breastfed. Completely normal and no worries.

I have two daughters one now 6 and the other 16 months. Both of them as babies would go up to a day and a half with no bowel movements and when I spoke with my dr about this we were told that was perfectly normal. They say that kids will go when they need to go and not to worry as long as when they do have a bm that everything is normal. Obviously if you notice that the baby seems to be really gasy or in pain of some sort you should have them checked out.

Hello B.. I am also a first time mom. My daughter is now 14 weeks old and she's had poop troubles since she was born. She was actually having a hard time getting the poop out. The doctor first had me use pedialax to get her to go. I was worried about using this too much. I read that you could insert the tip of a q-tip with vaseline on it and that it would make them push it out. I did this quite a bit because she just wouldn't go. I talked to my doctor and told him that the consistency of the poop was kind of like clay. He said that was not good and that it should be more like a milkshake. He recommended that I put Kondremul in her bottle and it has worked wonders. You can get it at Target. It's behind the pharmacy counter but you don't need a prescription.

Hi B.,

My daughter is now 1 but I had the same worries cause I tried breastfeeding and she couldn't latch on due to being tongue tied. But I switched her to formula and she would normally only go once or twice a day or every other day. so unless he seems to be straining overly much with pain. it probably is just normal for him. enjoy them while they are little cuz once they get mobile they are hard to keep up with.

My doctor told me that if he is breast fed, sometimes they can go 2-3 days with out a bowel movement. They are actually using all the nutrients you make especially for baby. If he's formula fed, 1-2 days is ok too. If you are really worried about it (as I was!!) give him a tablespoon of dark karo syrup and within a day you will have poop!!

I don't think that is normal. If I remember correctly, as soon as you put something in the top, something else comes out of the bottom almost immediately.

From my experience, breastfed babies will poop an ungodly amount in one day. When I switched them to formula, they would go once a day or every other day. They "say" every baby is different and could go a week without pooping....No thank you! Congrats on baby!

My son (now 7) had horrible bowel issues from the get go. he was not considered constipated until he had not had a bowel movement for more than three days. As long as you don't see the little man struggling to go and can't, you are okay. If you see him struggling and getting frustrated, I'd call your pediatrician and see if they want you do to anything - we had to do suppositories while he was an infant and then moved on to other things. Hope this helps!

Talk to your doctor, but my daughter went less frequently but more at a time. I think it just depends on the kid. It is always good to let the doc know these things, though, I think!
