My daughter turned 2 in Feb. I think she is getting her 2 year molars. She has been so fussy for the past 3 days. She is not eating or sleeping well. She wakes up crying all night long and won't nap durring the day. She has been running a low temp on and off. Teething is my best guess. I have felt her gums and she flinches and crys saying ouch. Any advice on how to comfort her? I've done tylenol and advil but they don't help much. Thanks for any advice.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thankyou all for the great advice! I got some Hylands and a teething ring. The hylands have always worked great in the past, I guess I just didn't think of them for molars. She has been doing better today. Actually took a nap! I will take her in though if she dosn't continue to improve. Thanks again! Oh yeah, LOVED the homemade popsicle idea!

Hi S.! My son just spent the last few days getting molars and he was miserable as well! He got a bit dehydrated too; he wouldn't eat or drink much. We did the Tylenol (fever of over 102) and Baby Orajel. I also gave him sugar free popsicles (he loved it) and tried to get him to drink Pedialyte. He would drink a bit of things if they were REALLY cold; I think that helped the pain. He didnt' particularly want his frozen teething ring, but he did use it a bit off and on. I would suggest the Orajel and popsicles!! Good luck! I feel for you!

Hi S., I don't know if this going to help but with all 3 of my boys I would freeze carrots grapes and give them zbits-crackers . If she has a binkie at night I would put baby numits in it and freeze it to . And other times we would just give them a cup with ice thats shavings.

She could be teething. Look into her mouth and see. Also, teething does not cause fevers, that is a myth. I've looked that one up. Fever's are only caused by infection, so something else might be going on. I would call her Dr. and see what he thinks. I would think ear infection, ear infections affect the jaw and radiate inward. Good luck

When my son got his 1st set of molars, he was in a lot of pain. The doctor suggested alternating Tylenol and Ibprofin (sp?). We also used Baby Orajel. With all of his other teeth, we used Hyland's Teething tablets, but they did do much for his molars. If those things don't seem to help, you might take her in to get her ears checked. I was convinced my son also had an ear infection, but it turned out it was just teething and a really bad cold. At least I knew!

I've always had great luck with Hyland's Teething Tablets. You stick a couple under their tongue and the relief is almost immediate. I've done the alternating doses of tylenol and advil as well, but it wasn't something I was comfortable doing for longer than a couple of days. You can find the teething tablets at most drug stores.

Hi there,
Since you like to do so much with your kids, why don't you all make popsicles (healthy ones) together out of real juice, you can use paper cups & maybe plastic spoons in them for the handle if you don't have the popsicle plastic sets. I have a set of four that I bought at Bed, Bath and Beyond I think. I feel that when kids help they will be more inclined to eat them. It would be fun and your 2 year old can eat them and it will numb the pain. I hope this helps. Good Luck and you sound like a great mom.....J.

Hyland's teething tablets. My son just got all four two year molars - and it took two months for them all to come through. I would rule out any othere causes first - it should not cause a fever.

I found that Baby Orajel helped for long enough to let the baby Motrin kick in. Later teeth cause more pain than earlier teeth because the gums are tougher, and so it's harder for the teeth to cut through. The jury is out about teething causing fevers. Well-known pediatricians, such as Dr. Brazelton, say it doesn't, while other well-known pediatricians, such as Dr. Sears, say that it can cause a low-grade fever. Even others say that the child will only get a fever the day before and day of a tooth erupting. Something else that might help is rubbing the gums gently, though if she won't let you even touch her gums, that could be difficult. I agree that you might want to make a trip to the pediatrician to rule out an ear infection, especially if she has any kind of cold or allergies in the last couple of weeks.

Hyland teeth tablets help us a ton! Also, he loves to chew on cold pacifiers.

Hi S.,
Well you probably have it pegged. You can alternate the tylenol and advil every 4 hours when she's having a real bad day. Just make sure you're giving her enough for her weight. The dosages are made to go by weight, not by age. I could write you a long posting explaining how much to give, but you can look it up online and get it figured out if you don't already know. The other things are Oragel, which just works temporarily, but at least long enough for a little relief and a mealtime. And then there are always the frozen teething rings. My kids always loved those. It felt so good on their poor swollen gums and they're reusable, so you're not constantly buying something. Let her chew on a wet washcloth, too. That helps some kids. The drool is out of control, but it's worth it to see them get some relief. It should be over soon and thankfully she won't remember it! God bless.
