I have 4 young children, with the birth of my 3rd i discovered a hernia in my belly button area. I then had another child but have not execised since the birth of my 3rd. i LOVE to exercise and realize as i get older how my body NEEDS it. However, everytime i sneeze, cough, lift anything etc., i feel it moving and it scares me, what can i do, do i need surgery?

What can I do next?

It will only get worse if you don't take care of it. Please do....
My husband had one (surgery) years ago and they didn't completely fix it! Little by little, it's seeping out, actually visible when looking at his belly. Soon, soon...
Take Care...kids and that awesome husband need you WELL. God will take care of the rest, do your part.

I'd highly recommend going to your Doc to see what's up. I hope you'll feel better soon.

I am actually experiencing this right now! You might need surgery. Mine became painful recently and I am going to have to get surgery. I have exercised since I had my baby almost a year ago and now I am supposed to take it easy until the surgery (which from what the surgeon has explained is relatively easy.)

Hi T.,
I had the same problem. I went to see my doctor at Kaiser and they suggested that I make an appointment with Dr.Sakai to get the hernia fixed. It was an easy surgery that they did right at Kaiser. They go through the piko, and it heald pretty fast. :) The only drawback is that you won't be able to carry heavy items for a few weeks.
I think you should call your doctor and schedule and appointment.
Aloha!

Hi there,
After the birth of my son, I also developed an umbilical hernia. It's like an outie...but if I suck it in really hard, It will go in sometimes. I went to have a surgeon take a look and she said it was more risky to have the surgery. You should get an opionion because it depends on how big of a gap you have in your abdominal muscle. When you start to strengthen those muscles, that will help your hernia feel more stable (not so vulnerable...) Good luck and hope you don't need surgery!

Congrats on having such a wonderful family and husband. I'm sure you certainly are a giving person but you did note you are trying to take better care of yourself. Given what you wrote and are experiencing it would seem you really do need to follow up with your doctor. Your body is talking to you when you are experiencing pain with exurtion and very common when one has a hernia. My thoughts are before you try to get your body back in shape my exercising which could make the hernia worse... perhaps you should consider getting the hernia repaired. They can get bad so don't wait, your doctor will be able to guide you to a resonable decision on what you should do about it but I certainly think that is your next step.

Best wishes!

L.

have u talked to a doctor? i would think bicycling would be good for you..start w/ low impact.. check out this stuff called serrapeptase..google it..also there's a good book Prescription for Nutritional Healing ..maybe supplements would help you.
i'm currently having problems w/ rheumatoid arthritis..i'm always working out and then this just happened to me this past month its been horrid..
i'm taking care of it and also back working out..i also had a C sec but it doesn't bother me.
i would say work your way up..start w/ low impact workouts..yoga?? can u do stretching workouts? maybe google hernia and exercise?
no weights i would think.
or just light weights..talk to a doc and get some healing supplements.

Hi T.,

Have you seen a doctor? Get medical advice from him. If it is a hernia, the surgery is done arthroscopicly so the recovery is quite rapid.

I formed an umbilical hernia during my second pregnancy. I did have the surgery. It's VERY minor surgery. My surgery was done at an outpaitent surgical center, not even a hospital. My doc made and tiny incision inside my belly button, you can't even see it. I was sent home within an hour after surgery. I was sore for awhile..you definately feel like you have had surgery. The hardest part is that they will give you a lifting restriction. Mine was no more than 8lbs for 8weeks. I was fortunate and had a lot of help around. Friends and family basically moved in for a week at a time.

There are two ways the hernia can be repaired. One is with stitches, which is how mine was repaired. They can do this if the hernia is very small. The other is by covering it with a type of metal gauze or screen.

Umbilical hernia's are very common during pregnancy and also in small babies. There is potential for making it bigger; your bowels to protrude, which could be life threatening; also, any small child's elbow or knee in your stomach is extremely painful.

My recommendation is for sure to see a doctor, and probably to have the surgery.

T.,
Yes. The longer you wait, the more extensive the surgery can be. My husband had a hernia and let it go for a while. He had an initial check and the Doc said that the tear was the size of a small baseball. When he finally went back to have it repaired, it had grown to the size of a cantaloup. The recovery was harder (he was laid up for a week.)
If we had to do it all over again, he said he would have went back sooner. He knows the surgery wouldn't have been as hard.
I hope that helps. Fell better.
