Help! Sick Little Girl!!

My ten month old had a really bad cold. She's really congested and has a cough that sounds bad. Her doctor closes at 12pm on Friday and I have one miserable baby who won't sleep! We've tried, baby vicks, a cool mist humidifier, and Tylenol for her fever. Is there anything I can do to make her more comfortable? At what point should I take her to an urgent care office?

What can I do next?

Once it starts interfering with sleep I would take her to the Dr. My son was doing the same thing and he ended up having an upper respiratory infection and strep throat. After the prescribed antibiotics and decongestant he was feeling better in 24 hrs.

You should take her to urgent care if she has any trouble breathing, not eating or taking in fluids and no soiled diapers.

What has worked for me is putting vicks on her chest and getting in the shower with her with a lot of steam you can turn the shower on and just sit with her on the toilet, just be careful not to let her get near the hot water. The steam loosens up all of the congestion.

My 12 month old was in the same situation for weeks. The only thing that helped her was antibiotics. She stoped coughing 12 hours after she first started taking it.

Prop up the mattress or crib so that she is elevated while she sleeps, vicks on the feet with socks, and you can take her to emergent care just to be sure but if there is no infection, I would be inclined to wait another day, they are open on Sunday. If you can get okay on the dosage, Delsym cough medicine is often the final component of what gets my kids to sleep when they have all of the head stuff going on. We have tried numerous brands, it was recommended by my peditrician and works better than anything else I have encountered.

A Cute Kids Urgent Care is FABULOUS!! I actually prefer them sometimes to my pediatricians office. They are open today and take insurance. If you don't have insurance they are reasonably priced. You can get right in to see a doctor and the staff is so kind.

If her nose is stuffy squirt saline drops in her nose, wait about 10 minutes and suck it out. She may HATE it but she could really feel better if she is able to breathe. How much is her temperature?

I would take her to the Cook's Urgent Care it is faster than the Cook's Downtown. The address is 6316 Precinct Line Rd. The phn # is ###-###-####.

I hope she feels better soon!

Our baby was very sick on the weekend of her 1st birthday. She was running a fever of 104.5 and the doc on call after hours told me it's ok on the phone. I called them 4 or 5 times over the weekend, and they all said that it sounded bacterial. Well, by Monday, when her temp hit 104.5, I took her into the doc and she had a double ear infection! Poor thing was in pain all weekend! I would take her in if I were you just to be on the safe side. It could turn out to be nothing, but it could be something bad.

Since she can't tell you what's wrong, I'd take her to an after-hours care center. If she has an ear infection or anything else that needs antibiotics, she could be pretty sick by Monday. If you call your doctors office, the answering service may be able to refer you where to go.

Hi,

I know its scary the first time they get sick. I would purchase a humidifier and get that running it will help the congestion just like us give her lots of fluid and she may not be in the mood to eat food so if she eats meats maybe a bottle of diluted chicken broth or something just until you can get to the doctor treat her like your mom did for you when you had a cold. Hope this helps.

Hi J.,
If you haven't already, I would take her in. RSV is going around quite a bit.
Hope your little one feels better soon.

Can you do Motrin yet? I can't remember if you can give it to her at 1 year or 6 mos. I also can't remember if you can give her Mucinex yet.

Put Vicks on her feet (just the bottoms) & cover her feet with sock when she goes to sleep tonight. Trust. It will help her with her cough.

You can always give the after-hour care at your doctors a call & ask them for advice. If her fever is over 101, then take her to the urgent care.

In my opinion, she should be seen. The weekend is a long time to wait with ear infections, or rsv, or pneumonia. I would certainly stick to an urgent care, but if it were me...even though I have 4 kids and tons of experience, I prefer to be sure! Hope she gets well soon! ~A.~
