My son is three and a half. He is a stool with-holder. He has had issues pooping since he was 6 months old. He doesn
't eat many veggies but tons of fruit. We have been potty training since march. We have success for about three weeks then total regression in the poop area. He is fine with pee. It is driving me crazy.

What can I do next?

This has to be hard. I would def check with his dr. I think that you are doing the best you can and shoudl NOT feel like YOU are not doing your best. I felt like I was a total failure since my son is having potty issues. SO I want you to know you are NOT alone. I am the mom that used the M & M and Reeses pieces...I know some ppl are against this but I fell that you have to use what works. My friends son was doing this and they had them using supoitories...that worked alone with the benefiber. I like the idea of the "everybody poops" book. Good luck!!! Tell us what happens.

Hi,
We just got through this problem but it was so bad when it was happening... I really feel for you. Did you contact your pediatrician. I called him all of the time with it and we worked through it... slowly. He first had us increase fiber with benefiber once a day.... that did not work.... he then had us use mineral oil.... that did not work either... my daughter would just refuse to poop - we tried the pull ups, the potty.... we really didn't care where she went but she was just so anti-pooping at all - she would go 8 days at times. Finally, the dr put her on a medicine called miralax and finally after 9 days or so she was pooping - on the potty and regularly, too. We are just now weaning her off the medicine... we were giving it to her daily and now maybe every three days. I also bought to book "everyone poops" and that along with the mirlax seemed to inspire her.... good luck - I know how frustrating and all consuming this process is.

This is not uncommon in boys. Try using a mild laxative for a couple of weeks to help the process along. Try your best not to put pressure on him, yet let him know you are proud of him when he is willing to try. My son had this problem. It was very frustrating to me, but he got there.

Hi B. my little one had the same problem so this is what i did, I took away the pull-up and put him on regluar underwear(he did not want to poop in those) then whenever we where at home I took off the underwear all together and let him go bottomless. For me this worked. He was using the pullup as secerity and would go searching for them when he had to poop, he found them a couple of times but then i learn to hide them where he could not reach. After maybe a week of doing this he was fully potty trained.

Hi B.! I can't imagine how frustrating this must be for you. This seems to be a typical problem for children at the age of potty training-a lot of women have posted similar requests!
To make sure it isn't any kind of constipation issue, make sure he's getting good fiber and water in his diet..if he's able to eat cereal maybe try raisan bran..i don't know if a three year old could get into that but maybe you could find some other fiber rich foods he'd enjoy! Those two things together should make things flow easily and make it difficult for him to with-hold. Also, you could try a reward system. Another mother on here has tried M&Ms and Reeses Cups because they were her childs favorites. Maybe this would work with your son! Other than those ideas, I would suggest talking to your pediatrician. It never hurts to ask a Dr's opinion! Well I wish you the best of luck!! I hope it works out ok!
