I have a 3 year old daughter, and she has excema on 75% of her body. Because of her excema we hardly ever get to sleep thru the night because she is always waking up from it itching. We have been to the doctor and they have given up perscription creams but she screams when we put them on her because she says they hurt. She just got it when she turned 2, so she has only had it for a little over a year but it really makes her miserable. And I dont feel like she is getting the rest she needs, it just takes its towl on the whole family.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone for your responses. My daughters excema is totally gone now the only thing that i have found really works is the Arbonne baby care line. I think it is even more impressive since this is the worst time for dry skin. But I truly believe in the Arbonne products now, my daughter has done a complete turn around. I love this stuff, and since I fell in love with the Arbonne products so much I have decided to become a Consultant.

My best friend's 2 yr old has Excema and uses Kara Vita skin care products on her and does not have a problem with the excema anymore. Here is the webpage, I hope it helps.

http://www.karavita.com/pages/public/home.asp

The products are a bit expensive but Sera has not had any problems with her excema since using it nightly after her bath.

Good Luck.

K.! I can help you!

I have eczema now for about 12 years. I went years without help other than tons of money invested in stroid creams that only helped a short time.

When I was pregnant with my second daughter I had it on my scalp and EVERYWHERE else except my face. I would wake up bloody from itching while I was asleep. It was miserable!

Until a wonderful dermatologist gave me a sample of an all natural bath oil. It is sold over the counter but no one here sells it locally. So I purchased it online and it is WONDERFUL. Completely safe for even newborns. When ever I get itchy even a little, I start taking baths with this. It heals it and then KEEPS it from coming back. The best part is that it doesn't feel like a thick coating of goo on your body. It is very light and comfortable.

It is called RoBathol. You can find it online. I purchase a gallon at a time for $50 and it lasts me almost TWO YEARS. It comes in smaller amounts but is a better value to purchase by the gallon. And considering my perscription co- pay is $30 that is MUCH cheaper in the long run. Plus my kids use it too when they get dry skin in the winter.

Let me know how it works for you. I am sure it will help!!!!!

Blessings.

Hi K.-
I can totally understand your frustration! I went thru the same thing with my son. His is so bad and is all over his genetal area and is excema often bleeds. First, use only dove in the bath and make them quick. Aquafore wored wonders for us. We have been to several allergists for this(in Chicago, bc we just moved). Over 40% of children with severe ecema have some type of food allergy that trigger the rash. He is also on Zyrtec at night to ease the itching and enable him to sleep. This helped SO much. I have taken him off of it as we have discovered his food allergies and the ecema has eased a lot. I really suggest calling your ped. and getting a allergist. There are wonderful drugs to help you and help your daughter sleep at night. The aquaphore is a great solution until you get there. It is the ONLY thing that helps and stops the itiching and bleeding.
Good luck- Let me know if you need any more answers or a good allergist.

Hi K. --

Everyone on here has such good suggestions for treating the excema -- thank goodness for Mamasource! I was surprised that only one person mentioned that it could be an allergic reaction, however, since that is one of common effects of certain allergies. You may want to take your daughter to an allergist. My son had excema when he was 4to 5 months old, and it turns out that was an early indication of several food allergies he now has. You may want to consider getting her tested for allergies just in case.

Good luck!

Both of my boys have eczema and I use Gentle Naturals Eczema cream, and I also use the baby wash in thier bath. It works miracles. My youngest had a flare up on his toes of all places, but it was so dry, chapped, and scabed. I didn't realize it till after it was at its worse. When I found it I put some of the Eczema cream on it and then put socks on over it. It was gone within a couple of days. FYI: Its a very thick cream and if you use it have a towel to wipe your hands off afterwards. Best place to find the stuff is Target.

Hello there. My daughter has eczema also. There are prescribed creams/ointments you can get from your doctor, but my pediatrician told me to buy Eucerin Calming Cream. I found it at my local store. It is expensive, but its wonderful. My daughters eczema spots arent as dark looking as before, and she is not itching as much. She does itch some, but she isnt digging at herself and crying anymore. I hope you find this tip useful, and your child and family find some comfort.

Hi K.,
I see that you probably have all the advise you need, however with excema you will find that every person is different and you probably will have to try a lot of things to find what works best for your daughter. I too have a daughter that suffers from servere skin problems. I was so excited after I too found Arbonne, so much so that I am now a Consultant. Anyway there is a lot to know about all the things that you can be doing with Arbonne to get her condition under control. there is no cure for Excema, you can treat the symptoms. There are some good treatments out there as the other Moms have suggested, but in my opinion you have already found one of the best. there are just some other things that you need to be doing as well. I will not overwhelm you with info, ask your arbonne rep for more help and if she is not knowledgable about this condition, I would be more that happy to help you. You can reach me anytime. Good Luck, let us know how you do.

She should have a dermatologist...ours prescribed my son (and since then, our daughter) a cream that worked wonders. Before that he was scartching like crazy, this stuff made all the difference. The fact that she is waking up itching is just cRaZy, if she is currently on a prescribed cream they need to try a different one.

Also, you should make sure to try to only bath her every 2-3 days, not more than that...it drys out the skin and just makes the eczema all the worse. You can get Cetaphil soap which was what was recommended to us. If she has it on her scalp there is an over-the-counter shampoo called Nizeral that works AWESOME!! it's pretty pricey, about $15 for a not so large bottle...but I can't tell you enough how great this works. Just be careful, as it isn't a 'no tears' product, lol...don't want to get it in her eyes. Our pediatrician even recommended we use this on our daughter at around 6 months for her excessive craddle cap. You can find it at Target.

Good luck!! :o)

I don't know what you have tried already but the doctor may perscribe elidel for her. And try switching detergents to ALL FREE and ClEAR. Then change her soap to Dove sensitive skin and hypoallergenic ( make sure its the bar soap ) You could also try the Eucerin Creame hypoallergenic for sensitive skin. Use that directly after a bath and 2 or three times a day. Thats what my doctor had me do for my son who is just now 2 and he has it all over his body since he was 9 months old. This really helped us get through. Its difficult to apply the lotion so many times but it really helps.

I've read some of the comments that the other mothers have told you. Besides all that, also try using aveeno. u need to tell her even thought it hurts and you may cry the cream the doctor gave you will make it feel better. most things also hurt more before they start getting better so if the cream burn put it on any way it may burn for a second but after that the itching may stop.

K.,

Below is some information about natural stuff that might help your daughter.I will try and post the link also the site where I found the info.

Cure Eczema

Eczema or dermatitis is a group of skin conditions. Mild eczema is characterized by dry, hot and itchy skin, while severe eczema is characterized by broken, raw and bleeding skin. Stress and environmental factors are being explored as some of the current causes of eczema. Below are some of the best home remedies to cure eczema, as reported by our readers. Please let us know if you have had any luck curing your eczema with folk remedies!

Reader Feedback -- THANK YOU!

Elimination of Citric Acid
2/16/2006: Laura from Streetsboro, Ohio writes, "Just wondering if you had heard from anyone regarding citric acid allergies and eczema. When my son was a baby he had really bad eczema. We didn't know what was causing it until I started looking at the labels of all his food products and discovered a common denominator....citric acid. I decided to only use products that did not have this in it and low and behold his eczema cleared up. It was even in the creams I was using to treat the eczema. No wonder none of it helped. He is 4 now and when he gets a build up of citric acid in his body (because it is in EVERYTHING) he gets eczema breakouts again."

4/24/2006: Minni from NYC agrees: "Re: Elimination of Citric Acid for Eczema - I agree 100%. Citric also causes me acne & headaches & sore throat. But I'll also add this: That Licorice is like the ANTITHESIS of Citric Acid. Why? Citrus speeds things up. Licorice calms things down."

Elimination of Wheat
8/4/2006: Amiee from Eastern Passage, NS writes, "I had been wheat-free for 7 months and my gas, acid-reflux and psorasis went away. When you are on a wheat-free diet, it can cause other problems like constipation if you do not watch your fiber intake. I am now off the wheat-free diet and all has returned. I will be going back on the wheat-free diet ASAP."

Cure #7: Cold Showers
8/28/2006: Katrina from Sterling, VA writes, "After the death of two very close friends and a lot of stress, I ended up with stress induced psoriasis all over my head, neck and shoulder. I tried EVERYTHING OTC and nothing worked so finally, I gave up, and started saving money to go to the doctor. I came across the cold water therapy on this site and although I did nto intend to use it to treat this issue, it sure cured it. I started taking cold water showers in the hottest months here in Virginia. Immediately I noticed the increase in energy and my hair is SUPER SOFT even after months of harsh psoriasis shampoos that had my hair turning to straw. Call me crazy, but it seems my shower doesn't get as grimey as it did before when I was using hot water. My complexion has improved, and there is an obvious difference in my pores. Basically, I have nothing bad to say about cold showers. After 2 months of them, I can't even STAND a hot shower now."

Salt Rub + Dr. Bronner's Mint Liquid Soap
9/15/2006: DevG from Chicago, IL writes, "The traditional "solutions" for eczema are largely ineffective and potentially harmful. I've worked my way through and into some helpful tips in dealing with eczema:

My suggestions :

-- salt rub (preferably in the shower or bathtub)
Use simple plain table salt.
Mix salt with a little warm water to form a firm pasty mixture that's not runny.
Rub this mixture on the skin to relieve the itch without scratching too deeply or causing bloodshed. Salt in a wound burns which in this case satiates the itch desire. The salt helps the skin understand to produce good oils and good stuff so that the skin can learn how to moisten itself.
If one gets too much salt on or it burns a little, use water to rinse the salt and the sting away.

-- (preferably after salt treatment) Dr. Bronner's Mint liquid soap available at health food stores and at Trader Joes. Trader Joe costs about $9 per 32oz bottle.

This helps. This eases itching and feels good and keeps the skin moist. Helps the skin heal. It's good. It works well in tandem with the salt.

Coconut Oil Cures Eczema

8/4/2006: Jay from Chicago, IL writes, "1 TBS daily of oral supplementation has helped by facial eczema and atopic dermatitis. I have become immediately convinced that Coconut oil is nothing short of a miracle remedy for the skin and immune system. I was suffering from weekly eczema outbreaks on the face, and withing 4 days of using 3 tablespoons daily and dabbing it with vitamin E oil, I noticed an almost immediate improvement. The itching and redness stopped, and the inflammation was way down. I would strongly urge ANYONE who suffers from this condition to try it, because in my opinion, there is nothing else like it on the planet."

3/1/2006: Bonnie writes, "'It is the only thing that gets rid of my daughter's eczema and mine. In fact mine was really bad when I was pregnant and it was the only relief I found. I used to take primrose oil internally -- that really helped, but it never offered any immediate relief. When she was about 2 months she got a bad flare up on her forehead and it cleared it within days. As a side note lice was going around the school and my boys came home with it. She never got it (I think it was the smell of coconut oil) & they always put their hats on her head."

2/11/2006: Amy from Reeseville, WI writes, "I use coconut oil half and half with butter to make my cookies or if the recipe calls for shortening, I use all coconut oil. It also cleared up eczema for me and my son. You can add it to bath water just a tablespoon or two. It works great."

Apple Cider Vinegar
3/23/2006: Jennifer from Wichita, KS writes, "OMG!!!! I am usually the one that never believes "this stuff will work", but I have tried everything to boost my energy levels, to diminish my mood swings, to curb my appetite, and to clear my skin,...and when I say everything, I mean it, until now. ACV is the cure ALL! There is nothing that it doesn't fix, from my large appetite to the weeds growing in my yard. I would take stock in this stuff! I have not experienced a a headache,(which I had daily for 12 years) in the last two weeks. I have lost 8 pounds in two weeks, My energy levels are through the roof, ( and with 4 kids it is important to keep those levels high:)) My skin and hair is fresher and silkier, without having to buy expensive shampoos and conditioners. My husband wont go near this stuff,...but I swear by it! I have my kids drinking it too, and I can tell a difference in their overall temperaments, their active levels are not extreme, they think clearer, nd for my youngest son who has Eczema, this is the only thing that has cleared him 100%, and we have put lots of money into soaps, lotions, and special diet needs for the last 3 years with him. Put a cup of ACV in his bath every night, towel him off and he is good to go, Before ACV , we would have to bathe him twice a day, once with soap, and the other just a water bath, and then lather him down with lotions and prescription creams. This has leveled him out and his skin is clear for the first time since birth. Now I don't have to bandage him up like a mummy when it gets really bad, because it simply is not there anymore!!!:) For ANYONE, with ANYTHING wrong with them,...this is the cure! I swear by ACV,...it has saved my family."

The spinal cord has 31 pairs of spinal nerves, which exit the spinal column. The most delicate and important organs of the nervous system: brain and spinal cord, are encased in a hard bony covering composed of the skull and spinal column. Irritation to the nervous system can occur when spinal biomechanics are compromised. Since every organ, cell and gland in the body requires information from the brain to function, interference in this transmission could cause symptoms, such as eczema, asthma, digestive problems, migraines etc. Many people will experience back pain, neck pain and other types of pains, but in many cases a spinal problem may be present causing nervous system malfunction without any spinal pain.

First of all make sure you aren't making it worse. Make sure that she is using products free from perfumes or dyes: soap, shampoo, bubble bath, laundry detergent, dryer sheets, etc.

Baby Orajel makes a baby eczema cream that works pretty well (I use it myself when my eczema pops up). Otherwise I would ask your pediatrician for an Rx.

Poor thing. I hope things get better for her and you can all get some rest.

Excema can be linked to an egg allergy. Try eliminating all egg products (including baked goods with eggs) and see if that helps. My daughter's excema cleared up practically overnight when we started using an aloe lotion on her. I don't remember the name of it, but we got it at the home show in novi. Pure aloe, even from the plant might work too. Its worth a try and has to be less expensive than arbonne!

hi there,

my 3yrold daughter also has excema. she is lucky because it has never been severe enough to get to the "red patches" phase for the long-term. she would occasionally get bad patches, but prescription creams made it worse, so we have always used either heavy honey/calendula cream from the health food store, or heavy aveeno cream. however, her mild excema has made her uncomfortable throughout the night for a long time- we just didn't realize until recently that her excema could be causing the sleep issues.
recently, though, her doctor put her on an allergy elimination diet because although you can't always see the patches, it was evident that there were heavy patches all over her body(and one of the first signs of food allergy in children is excema and dark circles under the eyes). we are still on the diet- after a 3-week period, you introduce the allergen foods back in (wheat and it's byproducts, dairy and it's byproducts, same with corn and eggs and refined sugar), and see what causes a reaction.
in two weeks, her excema has completely gone away. 100%, and she has had it since shortly after birth. depending on your doctor, they MAY have this allergy elimination diet on their computer or in files. it is difficult, especially depending on your regular diet. the hardest thing was giving up the annie's mac and cheese, but she has transitioned beautifully, and i have also learned of my own allergies!!
let me know if you want any more info on this. i am just amazed that the excema went away completely after the first two weeks of this!
hope this helps at all,
mel I.

I'm not sure what medications she is on, but I have eczema and all I do is put on a ton of cetaphil or eucerine right after a bath, while I am still a little damp. Those two lotions are the best that I have found in a reasonableprice range. There is a Kroger brand of Cetaphil that say "GEntle Skin Cream" on the front of it. If she is not using prescription steroids, just use a collagen based lotion everytime she starts itching. Make sure you use nothing with fragrance in it, either. Many fragrances have alcohol in it which can dry the skin. Alcohols should be as far down on the ingredient list as possible. Sorry the reply is so basic, but I don't know how much the doctor has taught you about the subject. If you have any more questions feel free to ask. I might know the answer.

Hello K.

Have you taken her to a Dermotologist? When my son was younger he had several reactions to different things. The biggest was fragrances. That is where the eczema came from. We had to use only tide detergent and no fragrant body soap. These days it is much easier to find but 10 yrs ago it was tough. We also had to use fragrance free shampoo. If you haven't already taken your daughter to a specialist I would. There is creams you can use to help. It is possible that if you find the trigger you can get rid of the eczema. My son gets it once in awhile but it doesn't stay when we treat it right away.

Hello just a responce to your message.....my daughter has that too. There is a cream you can get over the counter but I don't remember what it is. The nurse at the hospital told me to mix desitine with vasoline and when she gets out of the tub before you dry her off, take the cream and rub it on her where she is itching because her pores will be open and it will soak in there and then put her clothes on. It is better to do it at night so it works when she is sleeping. It worked for my daughter and now she is doing great...Also only use tide or baby laundry soap that helps too.

My son is three and he also has Excema, although his is not as severe as the situation you describe. He has a presciption for elidel creme, it is a steroid creme that helps with itching and fighting breakouts. It works well for him. I also use shea butter. You have to keep their skin moisturized, the drier the skin the more itchy it becomes.

I was going to recommend a prescription lotion...but I see it doesn't help. I tried Aveeno with my two year old...when he was a baby he had ecxema bad. Avveno makes a body wash and a cream and it smells good too. Hydrocortizone cream works too, my sister uses that and it has always helped. Just mix it with a mild lotion so she doesn't realize it is medicine. I am sorry you are going through this...try the aveeno. I just remembered Eucerin works too, I use the walmart brand on my two year old and it helps. Good Luck!!!

Hi K.,
You sure are getting the advice. My 4 yr. old grandson suffers tremendesly from this condition and it does run in the family.
But he got double whammied from both sides. My son and his wife finally took him to an allergist. He was also wheezing.
Turns out he has many allergies. All environmental, and animal dander. All of the things he is around at all times.
He is on morning and night breathing treatments. His mom also gives him an allergy pill everday. He gets oatmeal baths followed by Eucerin rubdowns. It is tough and I as a grandma have had a hard time with it. My heart breaks for him so much.
It could be asthma/allergy with your daughter as well. I now understand since i have been seeing an allergist that you dont have to wheeze to have asthma. So my advice is definitely start with an allergist and go with the advice of the specialist. Good luck to you!
My grandson seems to be in much better control after they tested him and figured out his worst allergies. He looks better too. No dark circles under his eyes anymore.

My daughter has excema too and her pediatrician prescribed Aclovate Cream, 0.05%. I also use Cetaphil soap and lotion. I put Cetaphil lotion on her body after bath, that helps the dry skin.
