HELP! My 20 Mo Old Does Not Sleep Well Anymore!

My son is 20 months old. He is very healthy, never any or current ear infections has 16 teeth and was a great sleeper. In the last week, every night at 4am or 2am then again at 6am he cries or whines in his sleep for a short time. He is starting to do it at nap time now. It scares me and sounds like he is having an unpleasant dream. He does not wake up and sit up and I don't think it is night terrors. He wakes up not fully rested and I am not sure what to do for him. He has a small desk fan for white noise or in the winter we run his cool mist humidifier. He is tired and some days he takes a 3 hour nap, some days an hour and a half. Could it be his final molars this early? His 4 'eye' teeth are in not all the way but half way. Maybe that is bothering him? We have been giving him motrin at bedtime to help. He is eating well and drinking well too. Any advice would be appreciated!
Christina

I had the same issue about a week ago with my 19 month old. She's always been a great sleeper at night (not so much with naps at daycare) and suddenly would wake up screaming in the middle of the night but go back to sleep within a minute or two. I didn't think it was eye teeth since hers are about halfway through as well but thought it might be the final molars since she has been chewing on things a lot back in that area. I really don't have any suggestions since after about a week and a half she went back to her typical sleep patterns with no disruptions at night. Hopefully things will get back to normal with you guys as well! Just wanted to let you know someone else out there was having the same issues and you're not alone in your confusion :)

Could be anything! It could be molars. Maybe changing naps to shorter/different times. Let me think on this a little....I am stuck

So I thought on this over night into this morning. I read your message also. Here is my thought. Try changing his room around a bit. Even if it is just his bed. Lay him down earlier for his nap, and wake him up after an hour and twenty min. No more than hour and fourty five. Then stimulate him. Keep him busy all afternoon. Play, books, outside depending on weather, dinner, bath, massage, mommy/daddy time, small simple book, and bed (about an hour after bath). Let me know. I think it is good to give more cushion on the mattress

Hi Christina! I have a fifteen month old who has been doing very similar things during his night time sleep and his naps. He is getting his eye teeth and I fully believe that this is what it is. I know it is really frustrating. My husband and I have not gotten a full night sleep in a LONG time. Hang in there, this too shall pass. Keep giving Motrin and yes try the teething tablets as well. They seem to take the edge off of the pain. Leah

it sounds like it could be teeth. give him the motrin not just at bedtime but when he goes down for a nap. you can also give him the hylands teething tablets which are natural. they help with the pain. my son likes them and i give them to him when he is not feeling well. I know it is a difficult time when are children do not feel well and we do not know what to do for them.
