My daughter will turn 11 Nov. 5th. I'm trying to get ahead of the game and come up with a party idea that is fun and creative but won't break the bank. She will probably only invite 4-5 girls and wants to have a sleepover. I have 2 girls and we have already done ice skating, movie dinner, etc. The weather is unpredictable this time of year. Any ideas??? Any and all help appreciated!!!!!!!!

What can I do next?

How about a stay at home makeover spa you do yourself -- with the help of a couple of teen friends from your church or neighborhood. Or could do it in a fun hotel with an indoor pool if you wanted to go that much. Get little fun things to do pedicures from the dollar store -- fun lotion - sparkly nail polish (with parental permission to paint their nails) -=-- or cooking lessons -little cakes, cookies, etc. a whole dinner they make themselves and take home the recipes, take picures and let each do their own scrapbook, include a simple scavenger hunt in the grocery store -- it doesn't take as much as moms like to think it does to make our kids happy.

Well for sleep-overs I made one of my daughters around 11 or 12 a "Sleep Over Cake". I got the directions from Family Fun, which you can find on-line. It was a rectangle sheet cake, with Twinkies for the girls in bed, and marshmellows for pillows, I forget what their heads were..... but it was the cutest cake and you don't have to be talented to make it. I find making their cakes, having them see me put time into it, makes the day more special... but if that's not your thing, then don't do it.

At that party we did the street scavenger hunt, which you should only do if you know your neighbors and they like you. But you give the girls a list and they can ask each house for one item (they don't have to collect it, just see it and get the neighbor to sign off on it). Whoever gets the most wins.

We did go out to Sonic in our pjs at the sleepover for ice-cream. There's something about going out in pjs that they think is so fun.

If your daughter likes to be creative, you could have a cooking party. Invite the girls over, give them aprons (usually you can buy inexpensive ones at antique stores that are real cute) and a recipe, and let them put together their own pizza, salad, and dessert (could even have them bake and decorate the birthday cake, if that's okay with your daughter).

You could give the aprons and a little recipe book made off the computer as party favors. If you are creative yourself, you could stencil or iron on letters for each girl's name on the apron (that could also eliminate fighting over a particular apron!). For the cookbook, just print off a series of easy recipes, make a cute cover from construction paper, and bind or staple together. You could also tie on an inexpensive kitchen tool, such as a whisk or rubber spoon, as an added decoration and favor.

Another idea is making tie-dye T shirts, but I don't know how easy or inexpensive that would be. Joann's and a few other places will usually have all kinds of arts and crafts kits, such as making jewelry, painting, etc, that could be fun, as an alternative to the tie-dye idea.

Or - have the girls make their own movie! They could come up with the script and plan 2 or 3 scenes, designate some for director, actresses, screen writers, background music, etc, and let them use the video camera to film. Then have Movie Night - hot dogs, pop corn, and watch their movie. Party favors could be copies of the film, but it would be delayed until you could get it copied.

Good luck, and happy birthday to your daughter!

When my niece turned 10, she did a Fear Factor party. She came up with each of the "competitions", and had about 5-6 girls. They did contests like having the girls eat through a pie plate filled with whipped cream to find a huge plastic roach at the bottom, that they had to carry in their mouths to the next activity. They did an obstacle course around their culdesac with a baby pool filled with jello that the girls had to jump over. My niece came up with most of the ideas herself, and the pictures from the party were adorable. It was cheap for her parents to put on, and the kids were exhausted when bedtime came (she had them sleepover, too). Good luck!
