Does anyone know of an african-american pediatrician in the Metro Detroit area? Our health insurance just recently changed and the pediatrician I loved and searched so long for doesn't take our insurance (United Healthcare).

So What Happened?

Dawn,
Good question and I'm glad you're curious. It is true, that neither race, nor gender has any bearing on the qualifications and expertise that any given Dr. has. It is simply a comfort that I as a parent wish to engage in. Seeing that this will be a relationship that may potentially be nourished over the next 15-18 years; I feel that you must be completely comfortable and able to relate to the Dr. you or your child visits on a regular basis. So along with wanting a Dr. that gives wonderful care and attention, I personally look for a Dr. that I can truly feel comfortable with on all levels.

HI A.,
Try Dr. Crystal Banks The name of the office is "My Kids Doc." located in southfield.
The address is 29255 Northwestern Hwy. I'm not sure what insurance she accept. Sorry I don't have the phone number. I've taken both of my boys there since they were newborns. They are now 5 and 3 years old.

Hello A. I (being African-American) understand your plight. As I too have only African Amercian doctors. I know that Dr. Leatherwood at Henry Ford in the New Center Building on the Blvd. is African American. If you call 1800-HERNYFORD they can schedule you and appt. Good luck!

We go to CHA in Ann Arbor and see Dr. Carmen Green-Lee, she is awesome and the rest of the staff as well as the office itself is great! Would highly recommend her =)
Their office number is ###-###-####, not sure if they take your specific ins but its worth a phone call...they do take a lot of insurances.

A. - I don't wish to be rude, I guess I am just ignorant about this, but I don't understand what part race plays in picking a doctor. I can understand some religious reasons, but not race - please enlighten me. Thanks
