My daughter is 2-yrs-old and has horrible eczema! We have tried everything from aquaphor to crisco...literally. The poor baby bites at her feet because they itch so badly. The creases of her arms flare up constantly, her legs are covered with spots of the rash, and her feet are so cracked from her itching. She breaks out everywhere except her face. What can I do? Topicals the doctor has prescribed haven't helped at all. I feel so sorry for her. Please help!!!
My 3yr old has eczema and we also use aquaphor. I also found a product call Dermarest that has helped to relieve the itching. It contains some hydrocortisone. I use it maybe once a day. I happened to stumble upon this product while I was browsing aroun in CVS. I hope this helps.
Good Luck, A. D.

Try breaking open a vitamin E capsule and rubbing the gel on the affected area. You can also try putting oatmeal into a food processor/blender and grinding it to a fine powder (homemade Aveeno)which can be added to her bath or applied as a paste when mixed with water. If she bites or scratches, it will be the dried paste coming off instead of skin and nothing toxic to ingest.

You need to find out what her "triggers" are. Common ones are foods such as dairy, wheat, high fructose corn syrup, soy, etc.
I would also HIGHLY recommend taking her to a naturopath. We took our daughter who was suffering from eczema to one (actually, Dr. Stacy Dunn in Dallas - http://www.wellnaturalhealth.com/bio.html) and she had us use a homeopathic remedy for a couple of days, and change her diet for a month. Within less than a week there was change for the better, and within two weeks it had completely cleared up. We kept her on the diet (no sugar, no wheat, no dairy and no soy) for the full month though. It's been over a year since we saw her, and we haven't seen the eczema again.

B.--we feel your pain. Our 3 year old has eczema just like what you have described. We use the aquaphor twice daily and put socks on her feet at night. We also keep her nails cut short so she doesn't hurt herself. The prescriptions haven't helped us, so we're still looking for an answer. We have currently cut out milk from her diet and she has been on soy milk for two weeks, but it does not seem to be helping much, if at all. We are going to try eliminating wheat next, so we'll see how it goes. From what we've observed, her eczema flares up whenever she plays (and sweats) outdoors. If you find anything that helps, please pass it along. Until then, know we are in the same boat, and to just keep greasing her up with the aquafore to releive the dryness. Also, we do give her an oral rx for itching every night. I think it is called Hydroxyzine, or something similar to that.

Eczema is often linked to food allergies. You might consider an elimination diet for her. The most common things to cause these reactions are peanuts, dairy and wheat. I know from firsthand experience as my younger son gets eczema when he inadvertently consumes wheat (he is on a dairy-free and gluten-free diet).
Also, have they biopsied her skin to make sure it's not dermititis herpetiformis? That is the reaction that some folks have to the gluten found in wheat, rye, barley and oats. Here's some info on this:

My 2yo daughter has psoriasis, which can look a little similar to eczema although it's an immune system problem and not an allegic response like eczema typically is. Her dermatologist has us using Verdeso foam on her psoriasis spots. Verdeso is an eczema medication also used to treat psoriasis, and we've had some success with it (after none with assorted Rx creams and topicals). It's a fairly mild steroid. You might want to ask your doctor about it. It's pretty new on the market (since Feb 2007) and most pharmacies don't stock it yet but can order it to arrive within a day or two.
If you're in San Antonio and looking for a good dermatologist, Dr. Robert Ochs is outstanding. He's not a pediatric specialist, but I love him for my daughter.

There is something causing the eczema. Get the chemical laden products out of your home. And start using the Renew lotion from Melaleuca on her. You can also purchase products from Melaleuca that do not contain harsh chemicals, everything from cleaning products to laundry products to bath and body products to make up and skin care. And these products do not cost an arm and a leg. You actually save money and your little girl won't be suffering from this horrible skin problem.
I have a friend who's son had eczema soooo bad. It turns out he was allergic to her breastmilk! She tried everything too. Once they switched him to a prescription formula, he improved drastically. Your daughter is older, but I would look into food allergies.

Have you had her tested for allergies? Do you notice any pattern between the flary skin and certain foods? My 2 year old son is allergic to eggs and dairy and his eczema gets really bad every time he eats something with either of those things.
Eucerin cream (not lotion) applied several times a day (not just once or twice) helps a lot with my son. Pediatricians might prescribe steroid cream to be used ONLY if it gets really bad. If your daughter's skin is flaring up all the time despite constant moisturizing, it sounds like something like an allergy is triggering it.

We can also check her digestive tract, liver, and immune system to make sure that they are all working optimally. WOW- I've never seen 40 responses to anything... I read most of them and there is alot of great advice. As a baby my little one suffered from the same thing!!
First- I changed his detergent to ALL clear.
Second- Kept a food diary.
Third-I gave him two baths a day washing him with cetaphil (dab his dry) and clipped his nails.
Fourth- His doctor gave me Desonide Cream 0.05% to put the creases of his elbows, back of his knees and neck, other areas that bothered him the most. Petroleum jelly for the areas that didn't.
Fifth- I kept his skin well hydrated and continued this routine to this day.
If I don't lotion him at night for a few days, it comes back by not near as bad as it use to!!
Things that didn't work for ME- Eucerin and any other lotions for that matter, oatmeal baths, hydrocortisone creams, and even benadryl.
Good luck,

If it truly is excema and not a food allergy, then the best lotion for Excema that I have found is Renew Intensive Skin Therapy from Melaleuca. Here is a story about it:
“I had to send in my success story when I saw your
Renew Challenge. Someone suggested that my teenage
daughter, who suffered from horribly dry and cracked
patches of skin on her arms, torso, and thighs, try
Renew. She was so embarrassed that she refused to wear
sleeveless shirts or a swimsuit. We had already visited
several doctors and tried creams, oral medication, and
even an injection. After using Renew for only a week, my
daughter’s skin was visibly improved. After approximately
two weeks, the irritation was gone! I recommend Renew
to anyone who complains of dry skin.”
Julie Clark, Powers, Michigan
If you don't know how to shop from Melaleuca (the wellness store that carries Renew) then let me know. I am sure it will make a difference for your beautiful little girl.
What helped my little the most seemed to be using a detergent like tide free or cheer free and using only 1/2 of the amount called for so it rinses out well, using aveno baby soap, and lotion. Also, washing off her legs, arms and hands with plain water and applying lotion during the day seemed to help alot.
Could be food allergy. Nuts, milk and such....
I know they do not reccomend it anymore but liquid benidryll helped with the itching. But you should ask dr. before giving that.

I also suggest l;ooking into food allergies. My oldest daughter had terrible exzema when she was younger. We didn't find out that she is allergic to peanuts and tree nuts until she was almost 5...we spent 7 hours in the ER when she ate 3 cashews. The pediatrition NEVER suggested a simple blood test for food allergies or even the possibility that it could be linked to food at all. I shutter to think about all the steroid cream we slathered on her. Once we adjusted her diet and avoided even trace amounts of nuts, she has never had a single outbreak. Hope you find some of this helpful, not that you want your DD to have a food allergy, but trust me it is better to know now to avoid a dangerous situation later :)

My daughter had eczema but it wasn't that bad. I took her to the Dr. and they just told me to buy over the counter creams and some other stuff. One of my friends at work told me about a Dr. that gave her some medicine for that for her son and it worked. So I decided to go with him was not to crazy about the Dr. but I just wanted for him to give me something to get rid of the eczema. He prescribed Desonide Cream 0.05% and it actually worked her eczema went away and if it does esp. in winter I just put some on and it takes it away. I don't know if you have already used this cream but if you haven't give it a try it might actually work for your daughter. I even told a friend of mine from work her daughter had the same thing but hers was worse her skin will actually bleed when the scabs would peel off. At first I just gave her a little bit of the cream so that she could try it and see if it would get rid of the eczema and it did so then I gave her the name of the cream which her Doctor gave her a RX for it and she has been using it ever since. She was so grateful and I was happy that I could help another mom with the same problem I had. Try it and please let me know what happens I hope it works for you too.

I second the idea of a food allergy. My son had eczema since he was 3 months. We didn't find out about food allergies until he was a year and had an allergy test done (only because he had a serious reaction to peanuts). we found out he was also highly allergic to milk and eggs. This was causing his eczema.
For the eczema itself, i use arbonne's baby products (i have been putting the diaper cream on major breakouts! works wonders!!!!) I also got Calming Naturals eczema cream, at Kroger! It's got pooh and piglet on the box. I love it!!
Eczema's a pain to keep under control. Preventing outbreaks is also difficult! Definietly talk toyour pedi about allergies!!

I would caution that this is maybe an allergic problem and not eczema per se. I saw something similar with my daughter and we used all kinds of anti itch creams, etc. Turns out that she had "mastocytoma" which is a clum of little cells called "mast cells" which get inflamed when exposed to an allergen. Benadryl cream makes the inflammation go down when she has flareups. You might want to consult with an allergist OR a dermatologist, not the regular GP, so that you can make sure it is being diagnosed correctly. All the eczema treatments in the world will not help if that is not what your baby has.
We have also been using the California Baby sensitive skin wash and the calendula diaper cream (on all problem skin areas besides diaper area). I have even been using that cream on my hands as I am a compulsive handwasher with the most horrible skin ever, and that has been a miracle worker.
If you buy from Whole Foods, save the receipt and if you aren't happy in 24-48 hours, take it back-they will give you 100% of your money back.
Good luck!

My niece had the same problem with her child and his eyes were swollen etc... due to this eczema...
My sister happened to see him and she told her to use the Burt's Bee's lotion and they do make it for children too...
It cleared up his skin problem too. You can purchase that Burt's Bee's lotion at any Walgreens, CVS etc... they generally do not carry it at Walmart.
I personally breakout with circles under my eyes due to the metal in the frame of my glasses... put on their night time creme on it ...and by morning I could see it was healing... in a few days...the redness was totally gone and remains gone as long as I use this lotion on my face.
it is awesome.
Also kids skin is messed up by all the toxins in the detergent etc... I do not selll any of those products that are skin friendly but have seen several people on this site sell them so you may want to contact them as all those perfumed soaps and such are too strong as is all that stuff used on carpets, or even on the clothing softner... it gives me a headache.

Hi B.,
I know you got a ton of responses but I just got around to responding. My daughter is 5yo and she has suffered from this since she was 6mo. I HIGHLY recommend you taking her for allergy tests. Eczema flares due to allergic reactions. We've been there too...tried EVERYTHING every Dr., friend and neighbor has suggested. Tried companies who see products that are hypoallergenic etc... nothing worked! Our pediatrician finally recommended VaniCream (soap, cream, sunscreen) and FREE&CLEAR (shampoo and conditioner). You can get this either by going to a pharmacy (walmart or CVS...Walgreens ALWAYS screwed up my order) and order it as an 'over the counter' or you can goto www.psico.com and order their products. If you go right to the website, I would HIGHLY recommend the VTEC cream as well, it is a vitamen E cream that is awesome. Put this on your daughters hands, feet and cover with socks at night. Also, for BAD flare ups, talk to your Dr. (see a dermatologist for sure) and get Triamcinolone (it is a steroid for temporary use) Between this and checking for allergies, you will be on your way to helping your daughter. I would love to share more of this with you if you need it since I have been there and know how frustrating it can all be. You can send me a PM through here if you are interested and I can give you my email address and phone number to chat about this. I would love to help you and your little girl out if you need it. Best of luck!
oh, P.S. - you need to be careful of STAPH with kiddos when they have bad eczema, this will make it 10x's worse (the itching) - talk to your Dr. more about it though. Just wanted to fill you in...been there, done that! :(

Looks like you already have a ton of great advice below but I thought I'd throw my 2 cents in as well. My son had really dry skin since he was born. We found the best thing was giving him a bath using Dove soap (the unscented one) since it doesn't dry the skin out like regular soap. After his bath we used Aveeno lotion on him and it works wonders. I ran this by his doctor and she gave it 2 thumbs up. His skin has gotten much better but there are days that his face gets really really dry. We end up applying the Aveeno to his skin about 4 times a day and it really helps keep it from getting dry.
You may also want to see a dermatologist like some others recommended just to make sure it is not an allergy to something.
Good luck! Let us know what happens.

Things you can do in the mean time. Go to CVS and get a product called Ceravae. Wash with the cleanser and use the CREAM (not lotion) for moisture. Email me with the nam of her Rx's and I can see if I can help. If you are going to a pediatrician, they use a lot of Elidel which is worthless. You will do better with over the counter hydracortisone. The pharmaceutical companies spend a lot of $$ marketing this cream to Peds. and it is not effective in severe cases.

First of all I do agree that it could be an allergy but I wanted to ask are you seeing a specialist? A pediatric dermatologist could help along with an allergist to rule out any allergy. In your case it seems like your pediatrician should have listened your concerns about the topicals not working. My dd is 3 and sometimes gets flare ups but my pediatrician sent us to a dermatologist at one point just to get a second look. I would call the pediatrician's office and ask for a refferal or a reccomendation of a good dermatologist to see as well as an allergist. Note that sometimes the time span to get into these specialist is not always quick.

My son has had horrible eczema in the past. It is due to his food allergies (soy, peanuts, tree nuts, and wheat). When we completely avoid these foods he very rarely has a flare up or problem. Soy is the biggest problem. Also, as mentioned by another poster, celiac is a possibility. (My mom has this.)
As for the best method we have found to help with eczema, the pediatric allergist prescribed Triamcinolone 0.1%/Mupirocin ointment. It is a combo steroid/antibiotic ointment that we apply twice a day when he has flare ups. We also give him Hydroxozine liquid at bedtime. Between these two medications, he clears up.

B., do I have the answer for you! My little girls both have eczema and I REALLY can sympathize with you. My oldest, who just turned 3 had it so bad when she was 21 months old that I just cried and cried over what to do. Well, my step mom found a product called FreeDerm HC on the web. I must admit, I was skeptical at first but I am not exaggerating when I say that within only a day or two of applications my little girl was on the road to recovery. We used the FreeDerm HC, the FreeDerm moisturizing cream and the purple FreeDerm "soap" religiously for a few months and then only had to maintain with just the HC after that (we no longer use the soaps or the other products, we just apply the HC directly to the site if there is even a hint of flare-up and it is usually gone by the time we wake in the morning if we catch it early. If we wait, sometimes it takes a day or two to clear up after applying the HC).
I really mean it when I say that the FreeDerm products were a gift from God!!! She still gets a little redness from time to time on the insides of her elbows or back of her knees (very minor) but we just apply the FreeDerm HC that we still have left (by the way...we've only gone through 1 1/2 jars since we started using it a little over a year ago...a little goes a LONG WAY! and it's worth every penny and more!) and it goes away within only a couple of applications. We tried so many things before FreeDerm with only disappointment but this stuff REALLY works!!!!
In my opinion, it is the best stuff out there and we didn't have any side effects using it. I wouldn't waste your time on other products, you will simply be amazed at how this stuff will clear your little one up. I am a believer! It turned our whole situation around and I just could not be happier with the results or feel more blessed that God sent the product our way.
If you want any further info or just want to chat, please don't hesitate to contact me. By the way, my step mom ordered it right off the internet at freederm.com.
Many Blessings to you and yours...

Hi B., it's been a while since I've been on mamasource and just saw your post... I realize it's been a month since your request. My recommendation is a lotion made by Melaleuca called "Renew". That along with an anti-itch creme also made by Melaleuca has dramatically helped 2 of my close friends. My friends little boy had horrible eczema on his face... after trying EVERYTHING over the counter and prescribed by the doctor, she tried these products and solved the problem. Another thing to consider is the bath soap and the laundry products that you are using. Your skin is in constant contact with clothes & bedding. And, of course, Melaleuca (who manufactures "wellness" products) has those products as well. You could also check out a local health & wellness store to see what options they have for soaps & laundry.

Hi B.,
I second the Arbonne baby products--they're the whole reason I believe in Arbonne so much! Both of my children have suffered from eczema. I was about to take them to the Dr. to put them on a prescription when my neighbor suggested I try the Arbonne products. I hated to see my kids suffer so much, so I was at a point in which I was willing to try anything! After about 2 days of using the products, I noticed a big difference in their skin. After 2 weeks, their eczema was gone! I still use the products to help maintain their healthy skin. I also know of someone whose child's eczema was so bad that he was on cortizone shots, but by using the Arbonne baby products, he no longer needs the shots!
If you would like some samples, let me know--I'll get some to you. It wouldn't hurt to try them to see how they work for your baby girl.
Also, I use detergents with no dyes or fragrances (All Free and Clear in pretty good) and do not use any dryer sheets. I use the dryer balls, which work well at eliminating static.
Hope this helps! Good luck to you and your baby girl.
Sincerely,
Jacqueline

My nephew had eczema just about that bad. Keep using the creams! For a really bad breakout, sometimes it takes a while.
Use Aveeno oatmeal in her bath, and give her Benedryl... it will help with the itching.
I know it is hard, but also try to find out if there are any allergies involved. Do you seem to notice it worse at one time than others? It could be effected from the pollen in the air to chocolate cake. (I know some doctors who swear that it is purely an allergy that causes this - I don't agree. I think that certain allergies can effect it - not cause it.) EDIT: Well, after reading the other posts, I guess I am wrong about the allergy part. Let me put it this way... my sister NEVER found anything that her son was allergic to. He is slowly growing out of it. And as far as my hand eczema - I changed nothing and woke up one day with it. No rhyme or reason. Just got it.
Good Luck to you and your little girl. I have hand eczema, and I know that it sure can itch like the dickens. I can only imagine what it is like all over the body... :(

My son at around one year old developed Eczema. I had heard about Melaleuca, but wasn't really convinced of the products. Well, one of my day care moms started out as a customer with them and told me also about the Renew lotion and it will clear it up in a week or so. I signed up, opened a temp. account to be able to shop as a prefered customer, ordered the Renew and sure enough in about 1 week it was gone. It's never been back either. I use the detergent, lotions, you name it, and I think over all it's helped everyone in my family. So I highly recomend the Renew lotion. You can email me if you'd like to find out about becoming a prefered customer so you can order the lotion for your daughter. : )
Hope this helps,
J.

The easiest thing to do is get her tested for allergies. You can go the western medicine way of doing this and have a little bit of blood drawn to test for food and environmental allergies, or you can look into an alternative method called NAET. one of my friends had luck with the blood testing and then eliminating all food allergies from her son's diet completely. My son was allergic to literally almost everything he ate once I started him on solid foods. He was allergic to cow's milk, soy milk, wheat, corn, and many, many other foods. Just these top four are very difficult to avoid! We have done the NAET method, and have had great success with it. It sounds really strange, but I guess that's why it's considered "alternative". By the way, he now eats his 4 biggest allergies which I listed above, along with many other things that used to cause the worst "eczema", and now he is doing very well. He is 17 months old. We started the NAET at 12 months old.
Oh, a creme that has worked well for us is "Corona". It is actually an animal ointment, but is totally safe for children. I first heard about it from a friend of mine whose son was in TX. Children's Hospital for leukemia treatments. The doctors and pharmacists there had to put it through a thorough testing procedure before they would allow the parents to put it on their son, but when they finished they declared it as better than anything they had to prescribe. I ordered mine online after doing a search for "Corona animal ointment".

All 3 of my boys have severe eczema. We have a lot of experience with different lotions and topical medications. Nothing that their doctors recommended or prescribed worked to any great degree. We tried Aquaphor, Eucerin, Cetaphil, Jergens, Huggies, Johnson & Johnson, Aveeno, lots of store brands, & more I'm sure I can't think of right now. The doctors prescribed (not at the same time though) Elidel, Protopic, OTC hydrocortisone, triminclone (sp?). I know that eczema is a symptom of an allergy or a sensitivity. It could be a food allergy, pet allergy, pollen, mold, or a chemical sensitivity. You need to use something that will keep her skin soft and cut down on the itching. You've got to break the itch-scratch cycle so that she doesn't break the skin and get an infection. There are two steps to this. Remove the allergen from her environment & moisturize her skin. When we stopped using things that have bleach, ammonia, or formaldehyde we saw a dramatic difference. We began using Renew lotion and within 3 weeks our boys' skin was almost completely clear. They haven't had a major eczema flare-up or asthma attack in almost a year and a half. As my boys' allergist told me, it is really important to break the cycle before these symptoms manifest as full blown asthma. I would be happy to give you all of the info about the things we use that have helped so much. Just let me know!

Do you use a "free" laundry detergent? Me kids both have terrible eczema, and one of their triggers comes from laundry detergent. We use All-Free (Tide-free made them break out)and it doesn't seem to bother their skin. We also use only Dove soap, with no perfume for baths and Lubriderm lotion. Like others that replied, we use Elidel and a prescription steroid for the flare ups. My son also has Celiac disease, to eating anything with wheat, rye or barley seems to trigger it too. Good luck.

Hi B., my son had a case of eczema in the creases of his legs and arms, when he was around 1 or 2. Here is what his pediatrician told us to do. Bathe him once or twice a week in clear water, no bubble bath, etc. Use only an antibacterial soap like Dial. He said bathing him less would not hurt at that age because they don't have the oil secretions that older children and adults have. Also apply Neosporin to the eczema. The old kind not the new one, the old one is greasy while the new one is more creamy. Anyway, this cleared up his eczema I want to say in a matter of weeks and he is now 7 years old and we have never had the problem again, even though he bathes everyday now we still only let him use Dial antibacterial soap. Anything that is going to have contact with his skin must be antibacterial. Try this, it just may work for you. Good luck.

I know how you feel. My daughter had eczema on the face and I was so embarrased. It mess up her little complexion, only for a little while. I was supported by other family members and friends who stated it was there for only a short time. I went to a dermatologist and a good one. You will know a good doctor because it may be hard or take several weeks to get an appt. First I would pray about it. Then I know natural products are better, even better than ALL Clear detergent. From what I have read these detergents have formalydahyde(may have misspelled) in it. It would be better to ask someone at Whole Food Market for some direction in this area. There is a book there called Nutritional Healing 4TH Edition by Phyllis Balch, CNC. There are lotions that are recommended. Check to see if there is anything else suggested for babies specifically.
For years now you would not know my daughter had eczema.
Wish you well. Email me if you decide to check this out.

I hope to give you some encouragement. My 11yo daughter had eczema exactly as you describe, and we went to every kind of dr. there was and had every test run only to find out that she was allergic to every food and airborne allergen there was. We basically just toughed it out and when I look back on those days it brings tears to my eyes that my daughter suffered so much. We just fed her the foods that she was the least allergic to, and she grew out of some of the food allergies, but she manages them herself now, and it doesn't bother her one bit. As far as the itchy, oozy eczema, we used a prescription strength cortizone cream or ointment (adult strength) on her twice a day minimum to help her suffering. She has suffered no ill effects from using it so often. We also used an Elmo ice pack, or something else cold to ease the heat that flares up usually at night time. It was hard on the whole family, but we got through it. Now she has very dry skin and a little eczema on her hands, but its a miracle compared to what she suffered when she was an infant-preschooler. I will pray for you.
ps Stay away from synthetic fabrics. Cotton clothes only.
